Have you planted your lettuce seeds yet? If so, what variety? Will you be growing them indoors only or will you be planting them out in the yard? I'd love to know!
I have been growing lettuce indoors for about 2 years now. I just use the white plastic dishpans from the Dollar Tree. I poke holes in the bottom of one, fill with my potting mix then just direct seed my lettuce in them. I put that container in another one without holes to catch any drips and bottom water in. I keep them covered with plastic wrap til most have germinated, and keep them under my grow lights on a shelf system much like yours. No need for me to transplant them to a bigger containers. They grow so fast after they start getting fertilized I am usually harvesting within 2-3 weeks after the poke thru the soil. No more listeria scares for me! LOL Our food supply is becoming more and more sketchy!
Thank you, Kibibi! I know a lot of people are first time gardeners or just starting their seeds indoors. So I'm happy to share what I'm doing and show close-ups of seedling care. 💗😊🌱🥬
Hi Martha! Oh wow. You have some great plants started indoors! I'll be starting my basil very soon. I've never grow sprouts or micro greens. It would be fun to experiment with both. Happy gardening, friend! 😊🌱🥬
I am getting ready to prick out coleus seedlings and this was helpful. Hope mine goes as well! Love those roots! I saw an influencer use a sponge to empty the water from the container! Thought that was a great idea. My bottom trays are hard to pick up to empty!
Hi June. How exciting that your coleus seedlings are ready to be pricked out! Now I'm curious. When is your average last frost date? Please keep me posted on how you make out with pricking the seedlings out. A sponge is a great idea for soaking up the water! The trays definitely get heavy when it comes to pouring out the excess water. 😊👍🏼🌱
Hi Vita, it is my garden goal, to grow my own lettuce and spinach this year…I have wanted to but have not even attempted as I fear failure…but greens are ridiculously expensive, and it’s what I eat a lot of….who doesn’t love a good salad? I have built 3 L shaped cedar raised bed, with a 4’ square in the center. I have the lumber for the 4th bed, which I will build as soon as it warms up. This is my year! The garden is fenced in and has a rabbit fence around the bottom….I will be looking at your videos to help me be successful…
Hi Tammy! You are right in that greens are very expensive. I definitely love a nice salad every night! I'm super excited that you'll be growing your own lettuce and spinach this year. You've got this!! Will you also be growing any leafy greens indoors or will you just be growing outdoors? Good luck, friend! 💪🏼💓😊🥬
@ after watching your video on growing lettuce a couple days ago, I started my first lettuce seeds, about 5 varieties…. I plan to pot them up like you did and we shall see! I gotta start somewhere!
I repotted about a week ago. Mini napa cabbage are really taking off and the Orange Hat Tomatoes popped today🎉 I think one pack of lettuce is past prime as they never germinated. I do have baby romaine lettuce Ruby Gem going. I will have to retry the baby green spinach.
It sounds like you have some fun plants that you are growing indoors! I plan to do the same thing as you, which is if something doesn't pop up or germinate, reseed or try something else. Happy gardening, friend! 😊🥬
I’ll wait a bit till March until I can plant right in my raised beds. Just came in from the mailbox,he was running late beginning of snow storm that is supposed till last into the weekend. Good news is MIgardener heat mat came, out of the box I like it. Price with shipping under $25.
Hi John. Great plan for planting your lettuce out directly in your garden beds. How much snow are you getting? We have no snow on the ground and it's going to get very cold soon (20s during the day and teens at night). Snow insulates the plants so hopefully my plants outdoors will do ok. ❄️ How exciting that your MIgardener heat mat arrived! Soon you'll be sowing those onion seeds. 😊🧅
@ every weather man gives a different amount it’s a large lake effect storm coming across the whole state into the Bennington Vermont area area. My niece was working in New Baltimore area and didn’t hit the snow band until she was about ten miles from home and it was reaching about the same distance north of us.
I sowed into my greenstalk. Temps don’t get much colder than 40. Some is edible but I’m not sure how to harvest. Not head lettuce- more cut and come again. I guess I will just take some. Don’t know if it will keep growing. It’s an experiment
That's cool that you sowed some lettuce in your greenstalk. Gardening experiments are the best! It sounds like you sowed the right kind of lettuce (cut & come again varieties). Usually you can start harvesting the leaves after a month or so. Good luck, friend! 🤞🏼😊🥬
Hi Stephanie! My lights are LED shop lights so they do not put out any (or much) heat at all. The room that I am growing my lettuce in stays generally cool (not exceeding 70 degrees Fahrenheit). Lettuce bolts if the temperature is above 75 F. I also like to grow slow-bolting lettuce, such as Black Seeded Simpson, Little Gem, etc. 😊🥬
Hi Vita, I like growing, but hate planting tiny seeds. Have you planted radish seeds? I'm separating seeds from the pods. I know they like cold weather, have to go and read about them.
Hi Michael. Yes, tiny seeds can be a nuisance. But the reward is so worth it in the end I feel! I have a love-hate relationship with begonia seeds because those are the smallest seeds I've ever worked with. They are quite literally dust! But I love how big the plants get and they always look so nice when they're blooming! I have planted radish seeds a few times in the past. I plan to grow radish in pots / containers this year on my porch. Since radish are root crops, they don't transplant well, therefore I'll be direct sowing them outdoors about 4-6 weeks before my average last frost date. 😊🌹
@@budgetgardeningvita I can't plant hardly anything any small the rabbits eat them to the ground. They even eat zinnias and marigolds. I'm going to try to grow radishes in a 24 inch long and it's about 5 inches deep. My garage getting colder down to 43 degrees F. Finally looks like my Amaryllis went to sleep. I peeked under the box I have them planted in. Hope they don't wake up early. Looks like your busy planting.

Jericho romaine, little gem, marek of four seasons, salad bowl, Silva,….
@@budgetgardeningvita I usually just buy lettuce leaves for sandwiches. Or buy a premade salad every so often.
Thank you. Always learning new things to become a better gardener.
Hi Gail. You're very welcome. 😊💲🌹
This video is so helpful! I didn’t know all this about seedlings and the handling of them or the proper recipes of starting mix. THANKS ALWAYS! 🌸🫶🏽💖

Indoor growing season in NH...sprouts, micro greens, basil, and lettuce started.

I sowed some on January 2 to keep inside under lights
Hi Cindy! Thanks for sharing. Great plan. I hope you have a great indoor harvest soon. I love harvesting fresh lettuce during the winter months! 🥬😊🌸

How do get them not to bolt under the grow lights?

@ Hmm I’m guessing my salad bowl mix was an easy bolter then. Thanks!
