Timing could not be better. For the last few years, I have battled SO MANY pests with lettuce/cabbage/choys, etc in my in-ground beds - and have been pondering whether containers (on my deck as well as inside) might be a better approach. I know it won't be a 100% - but still may provide more successful outcomes. Your video just convinced me. Thank you!
I get more lettuce out of my balcony planter than I do from my garden. I have a 3ft * 6” planter - I add new compost to it each year and then throw some seeds from a mesculin mix of lettuce each spring. I cut off handful of leaves for supper almost every night. The stuff in the garden is usually full of earwigs and slugs and bolts really quickly. Who knew - same seeds…….
Honestly, I wouldn't plant my lettuce in those grow bags...that to me wastes a lot of soil....6 inches of soil is plenty for most leaf lettuces.....if I were doing a head lettuce, I *might* splurge and put it in an 8 inch soil.....
I'm in zone 4B and grew good lettuce last year in my basement with lights as a test and turned out good, was just thinking of starting again in a couple days to be growing something already.
I am growing loose leaf indoor right now. Third attempt y’all and I hear that they are easy crops! 😅 They never germinated when I planted the seeds outdoors, so now I am trying indoors. New to gardening, so lots to learn . Newbies, where you at? The struggle is real! 🌱😅😅😂
@@MIgardener It's an even better feeling growing new types of peppers and fermenting them to make unique hot sauces. Early march (late Feb if you're a superhot) can't come soon enough for next year's seeds... If you ever want someone to vet out a specific variety to grow in WI for making a fermented hot sauce, let me know. Highly recommend the classic orange habanero, habanero gambia orange, 7-pot jonah, and serrano (for you heat sensitive ones). The flesh 7-pot Jonah is superb. Thicker and crisp like a jalapeno. Carolina reapers, 7-pot brainstrain, 7-pot cinder don't have great flavor (not fruity/floral) and the flesh is too spongy. Purple jalapenos sacrifice everything great about jalapenos to make them purple... White habaneros are outclassed by the classic orange imo. So are white UFOs. Fresno peppers are ok, if you want a "hot sauce" with zero heat but that long lasting lactic acid aftertaste. So many peppers. Only mentioned a fraction of this year's varieties. Love your channel. Love gardening, including non-peppers, but I highly encourage others to branch out from bell peppers. Especially in colder climates. The yields can be amazing with smaller-to-mid size fruits.
For those interested in hot sauce, my recommendation is to start with 1/2 quart fermented habanero (2.5% NaCl, 7 days RT), 1 large roasted onion (400F, 17min), 1 large roast garlic (400F, 17min), 1/2 to 1 cup of the brine used to ferment the peppers, 1/2 tsp xanthum gum...and blend until smooth. Store in refrigerator up to 2 years. Good base recipe. Enjoy!
You grow lettuce in containers under lights? I’ve been hoping to find info on this! Anything else you grow indoors all year? I’m in a cold climate so I only garden outside end of May to mid Sept.
I learn so much from your videos since I am in the same zone as you- Thank you for your time putting together the information that is easy to understand and follow
My lettuces volunteered in our greenhouse. Even though we are getting below freezing almost everyday here in North Idaho the lettuce is slowly growing.
Great video as I've started growing arugula indoors in the winter. I'm going to start containers of melange mix next so I can easily cut leaves of a tasty salad base. Loved the advice here, especially about the soil types and amendments.
I have been growing lettuce indoors for 4 years last month. I have not bought it since I started but I grow in in Kratky Passive hydroponic totes. I can't think of growing outside again. HA I am eating a big dinner salad and have Crisp Mint and Amish Deer Tongue mixed.
I grow Kratky hydroponic lettuce too! I do think that the lettuce tastes better when it grows outside in the garden but, during the winter, the kratky lettuce is better than store-bought.
@@MorningStar-str I learned years ago if you don't like the taste change the variety same with tomatoes. Much cleaner than outside with birds crapping all over it lol
I love ProMix, but sadly my last bag is full of fungus gnats. I am using boiling water to kill them (before I use it to plant or seed). I excited to plant your seeds - bought a bunch. Happy New Year!
Luke. Why can’t we just start the seeds in the container they will grow in? I have a new greenhouse to start seeds but they will stay there till harvest. Be got some nice deep trays I want to put them in.
I have found that my lettuce starts and grows best if i start it at the right time of the year in my growing beds. Just keep seeds watered every day until they sprout.
@ oh wow! I was sure you did. I’m fascinated that it stays as warm as it does! I’m still contemplating a GH, but water and heat are always what stop me.
I haven't had luck growing lettuce during the summer. It's too hot here in northern Utah. Our window box and greenhouse get too hot to be able to grow inside.
I'm growing lettuce 🥬in a container on my lanai. Temps have finally cooled down to the 80's. The slugs were destroying my plants in the ground. I just adopted a new bunny 🐇 and he will enjoy the continuous cuttings. We live on Oahu 🏝🌋🌊
I have 5 kinds of lettuce growing in my basement Most are about 4” tall. I’m moving them to bigger containers tomorrow. ( grow light system from gardeners supply)
Great tips, but I am not in control of the budget. I had a stroke and I can't do much of anything. I know how to grow lettuce, I just don't have the space with two cats in an apartment. It is difficult to grow anything in an apartment. I have a heat mat and I still grow mold not lettuce. I am just going to wait for Summer where everything grows, without control of the budget. LOL
Do not use a heat mat when growing lettuce. It’s a cold weather kind of crop. I also have nosey cats. lol. You can get clear acrylic window shelves and put them up higher so the cats can’t reach. That’s what I did. They’re small but lettuce doesn’t take a ton of room especially when first starting out. 🙂
I have a mini greenhouse in my living room. I get east/west light, do I need a grow light? I have trouble growing it grows leggy, I've been trying for about 2 years and am having trouble.
I would say yes! I had such a hard time growing anything without lights here in Michigan and you can get good ones for pretty affordable prices now. I’ve had great luck with the Spider farmer SF300 LED light (it’s a 3ft light because that’s what fits my shelving unit, but they do make a 4ft light as well). and the BBounder 3ft LED 4 pack shop lights (both on amazon). The ones by BBounder are lightweight, they don’t get hot and you get 4 of the 3ft lights for about $45 or less (they have sales from time to time). Even one of the lights from either company would make a huge difference for you I think. Best of luck growing!! 💜🌱

You are awesome:) Love your videos and tips. I also love buying your seeds! Thank you😊
Oh yeah!! The news is always buzzing with news of e.coli and listeria on lettuce greens.
Poor water in places where grocery store lettuce is grown plus bad handling technique between grower and store.
I love growing lettuce in my basement!! It’s 70 degrees down there!! I concession sow every 3 weeks!! Then we have fresh lettuce!!😊
It’s a great feeling always having lettuce!

Grow lights i yake it
For some bizarre reason, I have always struggled growing lettuce. I'll try this year growing in containers.
Started lettuce carrots kale radish in early november late october outside zone 7b...covered with plastic as needed . Growing well!
SAME, my 3 covered raised beds are booming with fresh produce right now. I too use plastic.

I love the seedlings plugs and trays I purchased when you had your sale. I just love how sturdy they are.
They’re so much easier to use than the flimsy trays.
I love promix. I have been using the red bag for seed starting for a few years. It works great
Thank you for all your posts and happy new year

Question: Which Promix do you use? There are so many choices! I used Promix GardenMix for my raised beds and had great success.
My question as well.
I'm looking for this answer as well.
Same! There are so many choices, would be great if Luke did a video on the differences and which he uses!
My lettuce often tastes bitter, is that a problem with the variety or in how I am growing it?

Words that bring fear to my heart...water when they need it! By chance, do you have a video on that? I never seem to get that part right!

You’re welcome!

Lettuce would be great in the winter sowing method.
Hi Luke Which Promix are you using for containers? There's a few different types. I want to get the best for containers. I use the Greenstalk.
I grow lettuce in old gallon milk jugs cut down to just 4" just fine. Plant some and try it
I'm going to try this using the winter sewing method so you're making like a greenhouse out of it I think it'll work well.
With draining holes in the bottom?

How about Southern Cali? Its been warm here. Im tired of buying lettuce at the grocery.
Would you show us an update in 45 days of that same crop?
Will do!
Is MIgardener ever gonna get into hydroponics? Seems like a lucrative winter option.
Does your green house get below freezing at night when you’re growing your lettuce?
Very useful video. Did you harden off the lettuce plants before planting them in the pots in the polytunnel?
What is the Pro mix?
Thank you 😊
Blessing
Thank you. I would like to know what brand your greenhouse is. I'll try to locate the info on your other videos.
Luke do you heat your greenhouse?
No, I would like to but I don’t have a great way to keep it heated.
@ oh wow! I was sure you did. I’m fascinated that it stays as warm as it does! I’m still contemplating a GH, but water and heat are always what stop me.
Which Promix do you use? One of does have fertilizer.
Try growing lettuce right in front of the tv, no grow lights needed. Ofc thats dependent on how much tv you watch.
Never thought of this but that’s a great idea 🤣 Thanks!
Made me think, I need to plant more lettuce!
You can never have too much lettuce!
I haven't had luck growing lettuce during the summer. It's too hot here in northern Utah. Our window box and greenhouse get too hot to be able to grow inside.
Yes! Definitely a spring and fall crop for that area.
Awesome!
Thanks for watching!
Do you heat the greenhouse?
Did you starter the lettuce in the greenhouse or a grow room inside?
He said it was started inside. I started my lettuces inside last year and had success

What kind of lettuce would be a crispy type of lettuce to grow ? Do you sell this type of lettuce seed ?
I have 5 kinds of lettuce growing in my basement Most are about 4” tall. I’m moving them to bigger containers tomorrow. ( grow light system from gardeners supply)
What can we do to take the bitterness away from lettuce?
Keep them from bolting. Temps may need to be lower, try harvesting early morning and immediately give ice bath
Lettuce was in my plans after the New Years day passes.

Luke, what lettuce variety do you consider has the most heat tolerance?? Thanks
I've grown Wasabi but can't get lettuce to grow lol
Living soil is a thing.
Reuse it forever.

I misread your title as " GROW SPACE LETTUCE!" - I was mildly deflated.....
Why did you send Bishimbayev to kill me ?
As soon as the video ends I am ordering your heat mat.
Luke said heat mat is not good for lettuce germinating.
