I still remember this game like it was yesterday. I still even remember going to play basketball after this game. Magic was at his peak. The whole Laker team was at their peak. Byron Scott and Worthy were also coming into their own, while Kareem started taking a back seat.
This was Mychal Thompson's (klay's dad) first game with the Lakers after being acquired in a trade. Notice he's wearing uniform #00. This game was played on a Sunday afternoon in Feb 1987. Thompson was on the Spurs and the prior friday night he showed up at their arena to get taped up, unaware that he had just been traded to the Lakers. He was informed by the Spurs' trainer that he was now "the enemy". Thompson jumped on a plane that night and got to the forum sunday morning, had a crash course in the Laker offense, went out and scored 10 pts for them. This was also a game which threatened kareem's double figure scoring streak, by then in the 700s. With one minute to play, kareem had scored six pts. He hit a layup with ab. 50 sec left and then was fouled with under 20 seconds left. He hit both free throws to get him to 10pts and the streak was intact.
Sorry, I just saw the full description by the person who posted the video and see that they did refer to kareem's scoring streak. Didn't see that before so I thought I'd add a bit of trivia about the game (which I recorded and still have)
man thank you for postin this.. i caught myself bein under the impression that magic couldnt shoot because nobody ever shows him doin anything but passing and some layups.. he actually has a pretty nice form n everything. That spin move on the fastbreak was dope good game magic hes sick
Monee Boiii Magic had two seasons where he shot 91% from the line and has a career 52% from the floor. He even had a season where he shot 38% from the 3. His ugly ass shot is deceiving.
Magic didn't dribble with his left very much, but he was big enough to shield defenders away from his weaknesses. However, he was an excellent ball handler because you couldn't steal it from him. When defenders started getting bigger, Magic went to the low-post where he could either score or facilitate.
@Stone Colds That's funny, Jordan only had 1 ring while Magic was in the League...Magic had 3 rings also the 90's were a weaker era than the 80's...there is a reason they moved the 3 point line in for 3 years...scoring sucked... All I am gonna say is this...you ain't beating the ShowTime Lakers scoring 80-90 points in a game...they run you out the building by 30 points...The 90's Bulls won many games where they did NOT score 100...not happening against those 80's teams Also that 91 Lakers Teams was hurt and not it Peak, unlike Jordan team. Worthy (Sprained ankle but played through) and Scott (Shoulder) was hurt, Coach Riley was coaching the Knicks, Woolridge, Cooper and Rambis was gone.. So to use Jordan fan argument...How many rings does Jordan have without Pippen and Phil Jackson? Zero...So why do you expect Magic to win without his top guys and Coach?
The Lakers are one of the most if not the most dynamic team ever. Definitely the best fast break, but they can slow it down and beat you with teamwork and defense.
Doug in San Diego I get what you saying but Magic beat Bird more than Bird beat Magic pls Magic is 2-1 in NBA finals> Magic should have even had all 3 but there was a team collapse in 1984. Bird is also in my top 3 players of all time tho
+Doug in San Diego No better finishers or passers than Magic or Bird. Champions, both of them. What makes them the two GOAT is how they inspired their teammates, made everyone on the floor better, and brought fresh style and beauty to the game.
WILLIAM MORRISON magic and bird didn't just make their teammates better, they also made each other better. It was amazing watching them during the 80s, as each season saw them expanding their individual games more and more. They each forced the other to get better in all phases of the game in order to try to be "better" than that guy on the other coast. And thank the good Lord that they went to the Lakers and Celtics... if either one would have gone anywhere else, it just wouldn't have been the same.
WOW!!! I feel sooo blessed to have grown up watching Magic n Showtime and Bird at the Gaahden every Sunday, just about on CBS!!! That intro is iconic in its own way to those who grew up in the 80s vs the 90s with NBC.
Those were like NBA Finals games. Both teams took them so seriously. Such great memories. I forgot about Magic's half-court shot. And that wicked spin move! And you forget how great the defense was as well. So many steals turned into Showtime breaks.
I watched this game beginning to end when it happened back in '87. Nothing beats 80s NBA basketball. These were two of the greatest teams of all time and this is one of the greatest games of all time.
Two major differences from the 80's to now that people don't bring up nearly enough. One...and I can't say this enough: PACE! Teams played fast. That's a by-product of conditioning and better fundamentals. Which leads me to point two. People say defense was so much worse. I disagree a bit on that. Yes, players got more athletic. But the Knicks and Heat and Jazz and even the Bulls looked better defensively because games were SLOWER. To add on to that...look at this game as evidence, guys made open shots. If you missed a rotation, you got KILLED on the court because you had shot makers. Not athletes or projects or developmental guys, but BASKETBALL PLAYERS. Big difference. I watch so many games where guys miss WIDE OPEN shots with regularity. You couldn't do that in this era...you'd get blown out. That's why Boston was so damn tough to beat in the Garden. Efficiency > athleticism.
Agreed totally. The mid-90s Cavs had impressive of defensive stats (largely attributed to pace) even by today's standards. Does anyone seriously think they'd hang with either of these teams, much less beat them? I hope not.
People say there was no D in the 80's. Nonsense. If you actually watch, guys played D but the offensive players were that much better. They hit shots with someone in their face.
Lakers shoot over 50% as a team in the 80s and many recent superstars now don't even do that like Kobe, and iverson. Kareem over magic though as the 80s Kareem is not the dominate younger Kareem. No way Lakers can beat Boston in 1985 without Kareem stepping up big time. At age 38 when Kareem want to play, he was still the most dominate
Jaxson Fugate Wow complete BS. I can't tell if you're just some old fart or an undereducated prepubescent boy. Defense WAS worse. It looks better because people couldn't use zone defense but now you need to be strategic with defense because of the ease in obtaining fouls. Superior defense is the reason why today's NBA has a slower pace you dimwit. And no one wants to mention the fact that for almost a decade, the NBA had way weaker competition due to the ABA merging. Kareem and Magic both had substantial increases in stats after the merge and it's not a surprise why. #faCTS

Magic is the Greatest point guard in NBA history.
