Ok this is gonna be a long comment (that’s how much I love this song!) First if all, you guys *have to* react to their live version of this song from their SWC IV it is amazing! Second, this was in 2012, SHINee as a group was 4 years old. The song is actually a combination of 2 other songs (Clue and Note) that can be found in the same album. This was said to be the must expensive choreography at the time since SM hired MJ’s choreographer Tony Testa! And lastly, it has to be said: Taemin’s long hair was so iconic!! I want it back!! Love you guys!!

This song was actually in their 4th year, you would be really surprised if you check their debut song “Replay”, they were so young, Taemin was 14!

Taemin once said that out of all SHINee dances he takes most pride in is Sherlock because of the unequaled good formation that changed the choreographies in kpop.Also it was the most expensive at the time.the song itself was a hybrid between two song and made it to Rolling Stones's list of the greatest boyband songs of all times at 12.

SHINee debuted in 2008. "Sherlock (Clue & Note)" was released in 2012, so not really "beginning SHINee" at all. This was already SHINee as legends, 4 years after their debut with "Replay." So Taemin is now 18 in this MV. Onew is 22, Jonghyun is 21 and Key and Minho are 20.
You may have noticed that "Sherlock" felt like you were listening to more than one song because it's a special song that combines 2 songs, "Clue" and "Note," from SHINee's Sherlock album. That's why the title of this MV is "Sherlock (Clue & Note)" If you were to listen to the album you would see that they are two separate songs, but when combined they become "Sherlock." So, what you just heard was the mashup of the two songs. (You should look up the two songs to hear what they sound like separately to understand how "Sherlock" was created.)
Therefore, you also may notice, if you watch a live performance, Minho's whisper part is different than what you heard in the MV because when they perform it live they chose different parts of "Clue" and "Note" to create "Sherlock" each time. So their performance is never exactly the same, which is one reason why SHINee's concerts are considered one of the best. No matter how many times you have heard a song or seen them perform, you will never get the same thing twice.
In SHINee's "Sherlock (Clue & Note)" MV the boys are Sherlock-like detectives who are looking for clues among the archives and displays in an old museum. The "ghost" girl -- who is played by Jessica Jung, the former member of Girls' Generation, a group that is also part of SM Entertainment -- is helping SHINee solve a mystery by leaving them clues. At the end they realize that the girl they have been seeing and chasing after all day is actually the girl that was originally involved in the mystery when they find an article talking about her from 1910 and they discover that they must have been seeing a ghost.
The room where they have their dance breaks is the main hall of the museum, like a large ballroom in a mansion or great hall, etc. And the compass rose star in the middle of the floor I interpret to represent SHINee who are known as shining stars and as a symbol for how they are navigating the globe as they reach fans all over the world.
In this song and MV SHINee are supposed to be detectives, so the choreography has been designed to give them Sherlock-like poses and to show them investigating clues, and taking photos, etc. That is why they do that Sherlock Holmes-style exaggerated march, and why you see them kneel down and draw a line on the floor, and why they hold their hands out like they are snapping a photo, and they have that move that looks like they are brushing dust from their sleeves, etc.
Fun fact: If you notice, the brand name on the computer was iWatson. Like Sherlock Holmes' sidekick Watson. The computer helped SHINee solve the mystery.
SHINee was actually starting a fashion trend at that time. As you may remember, SHINee are known for being one step ahead when it comes to fashion because they are the ones that start the trends in Korea that eventually influence fashion trends around the world. Fashion designers actually covet a chance to work with SHINee, or any of the members individually for that matter, because they know that if they can get SHINee to wear their clothes that they will become super popular.
And, yes, this was the era of Taemin with long hair. Although, in the MV, Taemin's really long hair was a wig. He only has long straight hair during the dance breaks, but during the story sections his hair is much shorter and kind of curly. (He had to go back and forth between long and short hair for the MV shoot so it was easier for them to use a wig, but later on for promotions he had hair extensions.) However, he really did grow his hair long for a while during "Lucifer" area in 2010. Taemin with long hair is one of his most iconic looks. I didn't really like his wig look, but Taemin with naturally long hair/hair extensions is one of my favorites. (He is actually known for making girls jealous because his hair is so perfect.) Many people thing that Taemin with long hair made him look pretty like a girl, but I actually think it's kind of a masculine look on him.
Taemin's hairstyle also made him one of the most popular of the members with their Japanese fans. This was the era when SHINee really started to solidify themselves as Japanese artists, so Taemin's look had Japanese fans gravitating to them. (SHINee debuted in Japan in 2011 and now they are considered one of the most popular artists in Japan as well.)
In the live performance "Sherlock (Clue & Note)" is part of the intro of the concert, but the whole concert is just as intense and amazing as what you just saw. They perform more than 30 songs all with live vocals the entire time. This performance was from their SHINee World Concert IV (SWC4) in Seoul, so it was in 2015.
As you may remember, Key is our fashionista of the group and he is known for creating the outfits for a lot of SHINee's MVs and live performances. Key designed several outfits for this concert, including the ones you see them wearing in this set. The embellishments and design for these military style uniformes, were created by him. Key has even been given the official title as SM's director of fashion.
If you think this performance was insane, just wait until you see the full concert. They perform like this for 3 hours straight and they never take more than a 5 minute break in between sets to change their clothes and get ready for the next set. If you watch this full set you will see that right after this they immediately follow this song up with their song "Shine" and then their Iconic performance of "Stranger" and then "Picasso." They literally go from one song to the next without even skipping a beat. They don't even have a chance to catch their breath, and yet, right after that, when they interact with the audience, they don't even look or sound like the performance has even started. And they do it all while singing live the whole time. :D
The choreography for "Sherlock (Clue & Note)" was created by Tony Testa a very well-known "Hollywood"-famous American choreographer who has also worked with some of the most famous artists, productions and dancers in the world, including Michael Jackson. "Sherlock" was the first time SM (or pretty much anyone in the Kpop industry) had ever used a famous choreographer, and at the time, it was the most expensive Kpop production ever. Once again, SHINee were trendsetters and, because of SHINee's skill level, SM became the first to see the value in using a well-known choreographer to help create their dances and to strive for a level of choreography and video production that surpassed anything that had ever been done before. (Now, SHINee -- and numerous SM groups -- have worked with Tony Testa multiple times over the years.) Today it's common place for Kpop companies to have really famous in-house choreographers, and to seek out people in the industry who are really making a name for themselves to choreograph for them, but SHINee was one of the first.

Those vocals are why SHINee are known as one of the best live performances in Kpop. Jonghyun is one of the best vocalist in the industry, and what you just experienced is why SHINee is one of the most well respected groups around. Even as rookies, Jonghyun and Onew were so well respected for their vocal abilities that they were mentors and vocal coaches for several SM trainees, including some of the members of EXO.
This whole concert DVD of SHINee World Concert IV in Seoul -- the whole 3+ hours -- has been uploaded to TH-cam by a fan, and it even has English subs for all the parts where they interact with the audience, right in the video, th-cam.com/video/6TknOLesUc4/w-d-xo.html. It really feels like you are right there at this concert. You should watch this whole concert, even if you can't react to the full thing -- watch it on your own sometime. :D You really can't fully grasp just how magnificent of performers SHINee are until you watch a full concert from beginning to end and see what makes a SHINee concert so unique.

I forgot that you guys haven't seen Taemin with long hair. It's not the first time. From when they debut in 2008 to 2012, Taemin was famous for having feminine looks. He has long hair in Lucifer, too. In Sherlock, Taemin uses hair extensions, but in Lucifer, he grew his hair out. From 2013 onward, SHINee had an image change, and Taemin also adopted a more masculine look and concept. I definitely recommend Lucifer (one of their older, but still really good tracks), Replay (the group's debut song that aged wonderfully), Everybody (the eye-liner was a look), and Odd Eye (Key in an eyepatch and everyone looking sexy). For bonus, Internet War is amazing to react to because it features shirtless Jonghyun, handcuffs, and Taemin. :)
Other Interesting Information
- Jonghyun had a tough "bad boy" image in the beginning stages, but he's a sensitive sweetheart.
- Onew had a consistent nice image and always love gags
- Key is known for being able to dance to girl group songs really well
- Minho had a quiet image at first, but he's actually a really talkative person
- 2013 was SHINee's year. They won their first grand prize at an award show as Artist of the Year. All of them cried on stage, and it was an emotional moment. The discography during that year was gorgeous, featuring tracks such as Dream Girl (creative stand mic usage), Everybody (high notes galore and dubstep), Why's So Serious (a theatrical take on zombie romance), Symptoms (one of my favorite ballad and those vocalsssss), and more. The MV's are so cool, but their live stages are a lot better. ;3

You have to see Why so Serious(Jonghyun doesn’t appear in the mv version because he was in a car accident but the song is really good and they all look are serving looks in it) and Dream Girl!! I mean obviously im here for all y'all but Ive been a Shawol since late 2009 and even since then ive always felt like one out of like 5 people in the world that loves every single bit of SHINee's campy weird ass fashion lmao kpop during this time looked as crazy as this majority of the time and its one of the reasons why I love it so much, its the most insane "7 year old in playing in the moms closet" fashion and its so chaotic and fun 😂 it always swells my heart seeing y'all react to SHINee, theyre all older than me (even tho Taemin is still a baby no matter what lol) but it always makes me proud like theyre my children being praised lol

So this song actually came out in 2012, 4 years after SHINee's debut. It created a lot of waves in Korea due to the album photoshoot because they were all photographed half naked, including Taemin who was still just 18 at the time. If you were confused about Taemin's different hair lengths in the MV, the long hair was actually just hair extensions. He did the semi-long hair thing previously during Lucifer promos and it was really well received so they decided to go even longer for Sherlock.
