  • How to synchronize the striking on a Seth Thomas tambour mantel clock from the 1920's. This clock strikes the hour and half-hour on a cathedral gong. It has "active" half-hour striking, in which the gears turn during half-hour striking.

    Thank you! This worked perfectly with my 1935 Seth Thomas Plymouth mantle clock. I accidentally let the chime spring run down and when I wound it, the clock struck the hour on the half hour and the half hour on the hour, as well as being several hours out of sync. Your process resolved it, and now my clock is chiming correctly.

    We have a old clock similar to this that we don't use, never wind it at all. When my sister was dying she told us that when she passes she'll come back and give us a sign that she was on the other side. Well shortly after she died this clock "Gonged" like I said the clock hasn't been used in years, I truly believe my sister was saying Hi to us.

    Bill, this was perfect, thank you! We have an early 1900's Seth Thomas clock from my Mom's grandmother, and this gets out of sync every time we forget to wind the coil that powers the chime. I was removing the hands from the clock to adjust, this is much less intrusive and worked like a charm. :-)

    On this clock it is OK to turn the hand back as long as you don't go back past the hour or half-hour. In this case we are moving the minute hand backward from 2 minutes beore the half-hour.

  • @ticktocktime100
    @ticktocktime100 12 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    You can do it that way but to me it it seems more complicated...What I do is I just simply count the number of strikes and move the little hand to the correct hour and then it is back in sync.

  • @HLD452
    @HLD452 14 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    There is also another way to synchronize it. Move the hour hand back 2 hrs if the strike is few hours away from it or any hour forward. If possible to move the hour hand.

  • @cumoncents

    There is another way to synchronize, a clock repair shop showed me how. You do it without touching the hands at all. What you do is in the back, open the door and watch the clock chime, the lever that moves when it chimes is the key.You just lift it up with some kind of probe to go through the cycle till it is where you want it. NOTE: You do not want to use your hand inside the clock to do this

  • @BillStoddard
    @BillStoddard  14 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If the minute hand has a brass bushing in the center, the bushing can be rotated in the hand to correct the chime release time. Otherwise, it is not easy to adjust.

    I have a Seth Thomas Tambour type mantle clock with a 69 movement that I bought at a flea market for $30. It only ran for about 5 minutes each try, after adjusting the beat. I then cleaned the pivot points with contact cleaner spray solvent, blew them out with compressed air, oiled with synthetic clock oil, swabbing up excess. Now the clock works fine even though a couple bushings have noticeable play in them. But I find that the half hour and hourly chimes are 2 minutes too fast. The clock hour was out of sync with the chime hour but I got that fixed by moving the hour hand to match the chime time, then advancing the minute hand all around until I reached the actual time. But how can I sync the minute hand to chime at the hour and half hour, not 2 minutes early?

    Hi Bill, I inherited a Seth Thomas #6 mantle clock. I loved the sound of the ticking and chimes so much growing up. However, the clock has not been used in a number of years. It was not broken and excellent condition. It was just replaced with a newer clock when my Dad retired. Any advice you could give me to get it working again? I would very much appreciate it any info. you could suggest. The key does not want to turn..but I don't believe its wound too tight. Thank you so much!!

      There is no such thing as winding a clock to tight, you might need to oil it put the pendulum and let it do its job, if it doesn’t work, than it might need to be professionally cleaned and oiled

    I've tried to adjust the chimes for 3 days. The chimes are 3 hours behind (eg at 8 pm, chimes 5 times). At first, I was hopefully in that the chimes were 2 hours behind. (Moved the minute hand to close to 27, then to 10, twice) But when I've tried it again, it went back to 3 hours behind. Bill, if you're still answering questions, any other suggestions?

    • @BillStoddard

      Grasp the hour hand at the center and turn it to point to the hour that the clock is striking (turn it in either direction, which ever way is closer). Then set the clock to the current time using the minute hand, turning the hand forward. If the hour hand is too hard to turn, have a clock shop do it.

    I have a Seth Thomas Westminster Chime clock that is off the hour strike by two. But it also strikes on the quarter hour, is there a similar easy way to synchronize it?

    • @BillStoddard
      @BillStoddard  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the type of movement it has. The easiest way is to grasp the hour hand at the center and turn it to point to the hour that the clock strikes (the hour hand is a friction fit on the shaft and will turn unless it is on too tight. Be careful not to bend the hand). Then use the minute hand to set the clock to the correct time, moving it forward, letting it strike each quarter hour.

    I have a Seth Thomas Westminster Chime 8-day key wound mantel clock. Your instructions tell how to synchronize the striking of the chimes by advancing it, My clock is doing the opposite. It is chiming one more hour than the hands show. Example: if the clock shows 3:00 then the chimes will strike 4 times on the hour. It's always an extra bong than the actual time I've tried your instructions and it hasn't helped. The 15 min. chime and the half hour chime seem to be fine. Thanks for your advice.

    • @BillStoddard

      George Z Felan Yes, the small square with the F and S is for regulating the timekeeping. Turn the regulator clockwise to speed up the clock. Don't force it, if it gets hard to turn, it is at the end of its range.
