Hello Martin. You're correct, the large circular saw was the right tool for the job. It made quick work cutting those RR ties. I had no idea there was such a large circular saw until I did a bit of internet searching. It is a bit heavy but effective. A vewer commented that he was building his backstop using RR ties however, his walls collapsed. That prompted me to replace the root-filled dirt foundation with rock/gravel, then level things off. So far the interconnected walls seem quite sturdy. Thank you for watching and your positive comment. Appreciate the congratulatory remark on subscribers but that seems to roller coaster at times. As you're familiar w/ YT, my channel will gain 2 then lose 3 (roller coaster affect), however, I am very thankful for subscribers like you who have shown support throughout. Don that's quite a project that would be reel tough without the power equipment.....How did you manage such good lookin' ties.....Mine never looked that good.....LOL!!😎🦾👀
Great question, Wes. I traveled to another part of NC to get those Grade 1 RR Ties. It cost a pretty penny but well worth it. The ties normally sold at Lowe's were oddly enough, more expensive than each of these and the ones at Lowe's were all full of splits. The ties at Lowe's are Grade 3's or Grade 4's which normally are so split that they are almost not worth using. So I did some research to locate a fella who actually runs a business excavating RR ties from train tracks and sells Grade 1, 2, and 3's. These Grade 1 RR Ties are heavy as hell-o and I can drag/shift them around but they're just too dang heavy to handle w/o a tractor or some type of HE. Thanks much for watching and commenting, Wes. Now I can almost throw some lead at targets but in Part 4 you'll see how I set things up to finally shoot at targets. Have a fine weekend, Wes. Don 👍🏽🤠 9/9/22

Cool use of the railroad ties there. I have never used a chainsaw before but definitely can imagine it wouldn't be as precise. The handsaw one that would take ages! Glad you opted for circular saw. Its such a thick piece of wood. Such an exciting project :) really enjoying seeing all this come together ❤️

Joey, it sure was a lot of pounding but my arms did not show signs of soreness or weakness after the last rebar was pounded. In fact, I was almost disappointed b/c I was in such a zone that not cutting or pounding threw off my whole psyche. I worked on some safety mods for the backstop today and will feature tham once I get it edited. Thanks for the support and hope you enjoyed seeing the main backstop structure erected. Redman4u2njoy, thanks for watching and commenting. My property is slightly over 45 acres and there's another 261+ acres of wooded land that wraps around my land. My new range allows for a 200 - 250 yard shot. I've been doing so many other projects lately which has kept me from using my rifle-pistol range as much as I'd like. Have a fine week. 👍🏽🤠 04/24/24
Hello AJ-sb8qk. EVERY railroad tie has four (4) rebar stakes attaching it to the RR tie directly beneath it. My RR ties were 6 inches deep so I pre-drilled four 12.5" deep holes down through the top RR tie and through the underlying RR tie. I then cut four rebar stakes 12.5 inches long to drive down through the top RR tie down into the RR tie that it sat on. This made the sides and back very sturdy. The key thing is to make sure that the original base (ground) layer is flush and level. I hope this answered your qestion and didn't mke things more confusing than it should be. Fire back at me with any further questions. My email is 1kryptoniteone@gmail.com Wishing you the best in your build. It's definitely a chit-load of work if you're doing it all by yourself as I did. 😱 Later, AJ. 👍🏽🤠 9/17/23
Hey there Gary. I purchased 43 grade 1 railroad ties which had little-to-no splits. Nothing like the RR ties sold at Lowes. I purchased them from a guy who extracts them from the railroad lines and resells the good ties. I hope you don't do like I did and attempt to build while the weather is blisterin. I'd wait until it cools down a bit. Best to you on your build. Wear steel toe'd boots. You'll see why. 👍🏽🤠 7/28/23
@@houndsmanone4563 thank you for your response and No in the heat. I live in Florida and the heat index is over 100 with 100% humidity. I want real ties not the Lowe’s one. I’ll try this in the winter when it’s 70 and I don’t have steel toes for sure. I’m old so I’ll be slow at it.
Gary, that's a smart move to wait until it's much cooler outside. We're having extremely hot, humid, weather at this very moment and have been enduring this weather for several weeks now. I'm beyond tired of this miserable weather but you just gotta deal with what comes our way. I know what you mean when you mention being old. My wife and I are in our 70's and even the simplest of things is quite demanding on one's body. The steel toes are not a necessity but once a tie slips and crunches on your toes, your whole outlook will change. If you live near Miami, Florida try contacting Peltons' Nursery. They claim to have Grade 1 RR ties. I have no clue what they're selling a RR tie for but they should be in much better quality than the rotten ties sold at Lowe's stores. If you have a Sunbelt Rentals near you, you should be able to rent a 20foot dump trailer and even the large 16" Makita circular saw to cut the RR ries to length. You can even rent a lift, to help you raise the heavy RR ties into position. There are over 72 SunBelt Rentals in Florida and I guarantee they'll have what you need. Best to you, Gary. 👍🏽🤠 7/28/23
@@houndsmanone4563 we are in Orlando and I just spoke to me brother and he is a craftsmen. He said this would be easy, but equipment would be required and he has an account with Lowe’s, HD and Sunbelt. He said he would help and get the rentals too. I have a heavy duty trailer already. Thanks for all the insight. It will be helpful in the near but colder weather. Lol
The project is already done by using various tools. The RR tie shooting backstop is holding up biggly. Thanks much for stopping by and commenting Sir. 👍🏽😄 01/19/25
Wondering how your setup is working a year later? Would you change anything? I have thought of doing one similar but had the thought of putting down one or 2 layers on the front to hold the sand in.
@Mtbambeno, so far the range has held up quite well. I don't throw as much lead down range as I thought I would but I made a few mods to the backstop to satisfy a few querks just for my liking. I did put 1 RR tie across the front to hold the clay-sand inside if it started to slide forward, however, it never-ever slid forward. Even with rain, the rain did not make the clay-sand break down and wash out. Overall, the build was a success and is still holding up. I need to do an update on many different projects to show viewers how several different builds I've done are still holding up well. Thanks much for asking and have a great week. 👍🏽🤠 04/16/24
Could you use #2 Ground Contact Wood Pressure Treated Lumber instead of ties considering sand stopping projectile. Ties here expensive and not great condition ?? Please advise
I definitely hear ya, JL. You're right, the cost of the RR ties are quite pricey and the quality of the RR ties from Lowe's and other places like that are crappy. Lowe's sells grade 3 RR ties which are all split and pretty much only good for landscaping. Yes, you could use 6x6 or 8x8 treated lumber but they are super costly. I purchased forty grade 1 RR ties that are of excellent quality directly from a man who gets them from the RR tracks. I had to travel about 70 minutes away to buy them. B/C I bought so many and got a military discount, they cost less than the price that Lowe's charges plus the ones I bought are hardly cracked and are heavy since they're saturated with creosote. I hope you can find someone who sells them in bulk and I hope you can get grade 1 RR ties since they're top-notch quality with few cracks and not punky from interior rot. Good luck finding some. I was down at the backstop range today making some slight sasfety modifications. It has gotten quite cooler than when I constructed the backstop and now's the time for some fun. Have a great Thanksgiving, JL and thanks for watching and commenting.

@@vuthaven3582 Outstanding! I hope my video helps give you an idea of how I built mine. I am not the originator of this design at all but it surely meets my needs. If you get a chance, check out Sun Belt Rentals in Brunswick, GA. They have lifts, tractors, and all kinds ofstuff to use. Thanks for the LIKE and if I remember correctly, you and Miss Demeanor were contemplating a small pistol range on your beautiful piece of land. Do you still have the wild hogs traversing your back field? That was funny how they'd sneak in, munch on grass, then high-tail it outta there when you'd take notice of them. Those boars can be a nasty handful if you ever approach them on a bad day. I watched a YT video where some folks were actually aggressively attacked during a stampede of boars. Now that I've never seen until I saw the vid. Alright Ray, I've yapped too dang much so thank you again for your support and I'll see you in one of your vids or in one of my next episodes. Be well, my friend. Don 👍🏽🤠 9/10/22
That is a beast of a circular saw! The backstop looks great. Looking forward to the completed project.
I finally completed the backstop Moo and the heat was down right unbearable but the mission is complete. Thanks for stopping in Moo. I just finished wathing your Big halibut video. Now that video had me sitting on the edge of my seat. 👍🏽🤠 06/11/24
Thats turned out great!! You did a perfect job with The back stop.
Thanks much, I'll fill it with sand and then finally throw some lead down range. 👍🏽🤠
Great job, Don! That was one BIG miter saw you had there and it was the right tool for the job. The back stop looks great! Level, square and very sturdy. Well done, my friend! BTW, I see you’re just 4 subscribers away from 1,000. Congrats in advance!
Thank you for that, Martin. Be well my friend and have a fine weekend. Don 👍🏽🤠 9/10/22
Thank you for putting out this video. I'm fixing to embark on a build and your video gave me very clear instructions on tools and techniques to use.
Glenn, I'm glad the video made sense to you. You'll enjoy the build but yer azz is gonna be worn out after several days of stacking, staking, hammering, and sweating BUT, guess what? It will be yours and built by your own hands. Be safe and enjoy the build. Don 👍🏽🤠 2/20/23 Thanks much for watching my video and have fun.
Looks great my friend
Thanks John. 👍🏽🤠
Beautiful view ⚘ ❣ have a great day 🥏🥏
Thank you. You have a fine week.
It looks great, you did a fantastic job. It looked hard work, especially on the top rows. I really like the large Makita saw
Hey there Joseph, yep, that Makita saw was a blessing to have instead of all other ulternatives. This old guy just ain't no spring chicken anymore 😁. Take it easy and thank you for your continued support. 👍🏽🤠 9/11/22
Cool👍
Thanks brother. Semper Fi! An old devil-dog here. 👍🏽🤠 2/17/23
Thanks Kate for staying tuned to all parts of the build. You saw the area prior to clearing and watched as it gradually developed into a sturdy backstop. Hey, I must commend you for the great video about the Queen. Your video would have pleased her. She loved her nation and citizens as her own family, probably even more and her citizens loved their majesty, The Queen. Thank you again for sharing and for your support to my channel. Wishing you and Tig a fine week. Don 👍🏽🤠 9/13/22
Did you put up a 'Part-4' video with the clay/sand added? I've looked for the video and can't find it. Very nice 'Part-3' video. I have railroad ties sitting in my yard waiting for me to start my shooting backstop so this video was EXTREMELY helpful!! 1/14/2025
Sorry Melissa, I did not publish a part 4. Lazy me; I didn't think anyone would be interested in me filling the backstop. So I will find, dust off, then publish the old footage. That will bring closure to the project. Thank you so much for watching my video and making a comment. I hope you liked the video. That way TH-cam will broadcast videos to a wider audience. When will you be building your RR tie backstop? I hope you have some help. I was a one-man show and it was quite hot and one heck of a task. So some help is a good thing (smile). Thank you for your complimentary comment. Have a geat week and be safe in your build. When you build, I hope you make a video? I'd love to see your version of backstop. I love everyone's different ideas. Thanks again. 👍🏽🤠 01/14/25
That looked like a lot of work. I bet your arms were tired from all that hammering.
This video shows a semi-finished product. Take it easy and stay tuned. Don 👍🏽🤠 1/4/23
Nice set up. How big is your property foe the backstop?
Redman4u2njoy, thanks for watching and commenting. My property is slightly over 45 acres and there's another 261+ acres of wooded land that wraps around my land. My new range allows for a 200 - 250 yard shot. I've been doing so many other projects lately which has kept me from using my rifle-pistol range as much as I'd like. Have a fine week. 👍🏽🤠 04/24/24
This looks awesome. I have a question, did you put Rebar through every last one or just the first few railroad ties?
My email is 1kryptoniteone@gmail.com
Wishing you the best in your build. It's definitely a chit-load of work if you're doing it all by yourself as I did. 😱 Later, AJ. 👍🏽🤠 9/17/23
Very nice. How many ties did you have to buy. I’m getting ready to make one.
Lol
Just use a chain saw!! And be done with it!!☺
The project is already done by using various tools.
Sir where can I rent a lift truck from the one like this video?
Vutha, if you have an implement company near you, sometimes they have lifts for rent. Are you located in the US? If so, I'm sure there are numerous companies that rent lifts near you. Thank you for watching my video and commenting. Have a fine upcoming week. 👍🏽🤠 3/19/23
@@houndsmanone4563 , am here in Waycross,Ga I want to set up my backstop similarly like the one on TH-cam, I got 30ties
That's where I rented a 20 foot trailer to go buy my RR ties and I rented the big Makita circular saw to cut through my railroad ties. Best wishes to you in building your backstop. It sure would be nice if you could get an extra hand at building your backstop. Oh BTW, if you can buy a set of timber tongs, that will realy help you when lifting or dragging RR ties around. I bought mine from Amazon. I'll send you a link after sending this comment. 👍🏽🤠 3/20/23
Vutha, here's a link for a pair of Log tongs I purchased. After I brutally smashed my finger from a RR tie, I started working smarter with the right tools. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LX0LJAA/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1
Here's another tool I bought to assist in moving RR ties. It's called a hookaroon
