Two lane road riding gets me 58mpg on my W800. It is smooth as silk from 0 to 55moph. Very slight vibration from 57 to 67mph. smooth as silk at 70 and 75mph and it is a riot around 90mph which it gets to in a hurry with lots of throttle left. Perhaps the carbs on the 650 are not 100% synchronized. I had more vibration during break in but after the first oil change it got a lot smoother. Had vibes in the pegs, seat and bars before break in. Now I only get a little peg vibe right at 3500rpm. I don't really notice it any more. I used to avoid 60mph but now it doesn't bother me.
    Cheers
    BJ

02:07 I've actually done my first Iron Butt on my 2003 W650... 1617 kilometers in 17 hours and the bike was super comfy.

I have a 2000 model. After coming from a T140 Triumph, the W650 is smooth as silk. Never noticed any excessive vibration or numbness.

Well, ... reckon I'll look into that larger sprocket! Found one with decent accessories, for $3500. ... & since the old Power Wagon gets 7 mpg, the W650 will smooth right out in no time.

🌟I put a "one tooth larger" sprocket on the front of my W800 and it made all the difference.
Same as you: that's the speed range I'm generally at.
    Vibrantion easily handled👌🏽
Good luck from North Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

I have a 2002 W650 and ride up to 70mph all the time here in England with no excessive vibration. It has done 33,000 trouble free miles, maybe yours needs more use. A great bike but it is a little wallowy, I believe better rear shocks would help but I can live with it.

Just bought one, rode it two hundred miles from Southampton to Nottinghamshire to collect it, vibration was no issue whatsoever, the seats not all that but I love it.

I hear all this vibration-talk but am-yet to feel-it . I think many-people repeat-others...or ....it's noticeable on very-long flat-straight roads ( the highways you mention ). Where I live and ride I'm constantly hustling-it round a bend then chucking it over for the next-one , plus looking-out for cars , cows or pigs...they all cause-trouble (03-model). So no-time to notice a vibration etc and there's no vibrations like old-Triumphs, Nortons or Ducati's going-on , maybe everyone's gone a bit-soft on-things , a motorcycle is meant to be a visceral-riding-experience . I would suggest looking at the rubber-engine-mounts and what they are torqued-to because some seem to (definitely talked-about ) have issues while others don't . Also wheel-balance/run-out . The old Norton Commando's were terrible if their 'Isolastic' mounts weren't right . Dave nz

Apparently if the carbs aren't exactly-right , they vibrate more ...Dave

they put flatter bars on after about 2002. The increased weight over the front end makes it ride and handle better

The W650 is 476lbs wet. My W800 is 495lbs wet due to added ABS, Fuel injection and catalytic converters. A little heavy as a first bike and it's all I want to handle at 69 years of age. Just for comparison I have a 1968 Norton Commando work in progress that is around 400lbs.

I thought this engine had balancer shafts at the front of the motor . . . I would have expected reasonable smoothness, are the carbs balanced OK ? . . .

I have this motorcycle in the UK, I love it for looks and mild manners of the engine, and that's the payoff against better performing bikes of a similar class. Only issue I think that's glaring is the front suspension, you grab the lever too tight and it bucks like you're on a bouncy castle, way too spongy. Everything else I can forgive as part of its character 🙂

Bike is excellent at 40mph, about 2200 rpms! Although vibration is a problem over 40mph! P.S No shut off valve on petcock(ridiculous), air filter has element you CAN'T take out have to buy WHOLE new part($30) is crazy also!

Thank you for this review. Very helpful. Beautiful motorcycle, and am looking locally, but, geographic environs may negatively impact realistic purchasing decisions. ... Highway & distance to reach 'country lanes' likely will sabotage the riding experience.
55+mph will account for the better part of 65% of my saddle time. Tempered expectations may be in order.

    • @kdsowen2882
      @kdsowen2882 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It's definitely 'more-refined' than my old T140 but a bit-less fun too , although you can push-it hard every-day and only have to change-oil , occasionally set-valves (very-easy !)...and it Doesn't blow-up ! They vibrate if the carbs are out-of-sync I just heard from a Kawasaki-mechanic . Dave nz

As long as my butt can stand it I could drive my W800 on the Interstate all day. It has enough power but it is not designed to be an interstate mile eater. As far as vibration I only get a little vibration in the foot pegs at 3500rpm. That's at 60mph but I don't find it objectionable. At 50mph I am doing 2800rpm and it is smooth as butter at that speed. It is very smooth at 70mph plus. 3300rpm at 55mph. 3500rpm at 60mph and 4000rpm at 70mph. 4200rpm at 120kph (75mph).

The W650 has a fork rake of 24 degrees while the newer W800s have a steering rake of 26 degrees. Maybe that makes them less prone to the wobbles but my 2022 has never shown any sign of it. Check your tire pressure and fork oil. Higher than specified tire pressures will contribute to wobble and tram lining on cracks and rain grooves. Single rider pressures are 28psi front and 32psi rear. If you run the fully loaded pressure of 36psi in the rear without a passenger it will follow cracks and grooves more easily due to narrower contact patch on the already skinny tires.

What? 2,418 miles and doesn't look it? What does that actually mean please? As that's hardly run in ffs and it should really look completely new if it's been well protected from the elements!? If it's a 2000 and such really low mileage, how long was it sitting? IMHO the front forks need to be replaced first before any other upgrade (likely with progressives; and tune for you via weight; and secondly then the rears... the most important upgrade/s by far... which should cure the 'dive'?!
