For me it comes down to the focus breathing for video. If Photography is your main thing the sigma all the way I still have the original sigma 50mm 1.4 and love it.
Sony GM has linear MF response, unlocks focus breathing compensation, 1.2 makes a larger difference when shooting certain subjects at certain distances, bokeh is softer overall with optical vignette getting corrected at wider apertures, objectively better control of aberrations at larger apertures, better flare control. Is it 1K USD better? I dunno.
Nice work…thanks! One item worth mentioning on autofocus is the sigma maximum frames per second is 15 so if you use it on a Sony A9 or A1 you are losing 5-15 frames per second. If you shoot indoor sports like basketball or volleyball that is a big reason to spend the extra money for the Sony 1.2.
How’s the chroma between the two? It looks like the Sony had some chroma at 1.2 curious how it compares to the sigma 1.4 vs the GM at 1.4 Peep the sharpness of that airplane at 3:20
You've missed one crucial difference - the Sony focuses from 0.4m, while Sigma same like the HSM version starts from 0.5m. Also, the chromatic aberration looks worse on Sigma - at 4:20 it makes the sea highlights purple. But still for that price it's great value. Finally AF is no longer "almost as good" as native.
man i am so late......I have been super busy. Been trying to grind like crazy lately. Can't even keep up with my TH-cam lately. Great review as always! Focus breathing is pretty bad but man looks good.
Hello awesome videos i want to ask you and the community. I am a amateur photographer like really amateur lol. However I really and always found it very amazing. I want to do Astro I was eyeing the A6400 and kinda torn between which lenses to get the Sonys or sigma I know I have to buy other stuff but I am not sure what to do. Also idk if I should get another camera like the 6600. I know there are better cameras but being that idk what I am doing I don’t want to spend a lot (yet) thank you all for any advice
@@SidneyDiongzon so do a full frame ok what about lens I do want to do some video and other shots forgive me I might not use the right lingo. I want to start with Astro
If you spend $1999 on the 1.2 instead of the 1.4 you must hate money and why did everyone decide focus breathing was the spec we would obsess over. I see people who do ONLY photo work pass on a lens because of focus breathing :-)
Missing : Sharpness "pixel-peeking" (micro-contrast) and (much more) differenz bokeh situations. (Distance, different kind of back/forgrounds) and also : both at f 1.4 . Corner Sharpness ? Colo fringing differences ? ..Quite superficial. A "buying guide" has to satisfy people who truly envisage 2000 for a lens. Not seduce with the argument : "Buy, its 1000 cheaper'. It's just that these comparaisons are supposed to suffice - but dont - for being sure and best informed. Or is ist just all about being the first out there...
And you forgot to mention purple/green fringing which is absent on Sony and is pretty harsh on Sigma. Similar to old DG HSM version and Zeiss 50mm f1.4.
the only complaint i have with the sigma is... its come way to late ;) Love the 85 DG DN, didn't need the 35mm 1.4 but hopped on the Zeiss Planar 1.4 50mm which i want exchange for the simga
I honestly dont like the look of the sigma lenses at all. With how shiny they are, it just makes them look cheap, even if build quality not bad. I will stick to Sony lenses and also Tamron...
Thanks for comparing video performance/focusing. I would think a better comparison for f 1.2 vs 1.4, shoot in the dark.
For me it comes down to the focus breathing for video. If Photography is your main thing the sigma all the way I still have the original sigma 50mm 1.4 and love it.
in the price comparison, there is a typo Sony 1.2 not 1.4
Good morning ❤ Thanks for sharing this!! I’ll definitely take your advice on this!! The price of sigma is so much reasonable!!

Hey, I just watched your video and got the GM 1.2, because I can! 👊🏻
Great video! Appreciate the review and comparison!
Thanks friends!
Wow!!! Great deal compared to the GM lens. I still have my 55mm zeiss and love how compact it is... F1.8 is good enough for me.
It’s sooooo good!!!
The Sigma 50mm f1.4 is too good for the price point. Great comparison, adding the Sigma in my wish list soon!
Why not a simple static portrait of you with some lights in the background to show the separation and bokeh shape?
Heads up on your price comparison title card you have the Sony listed at 1.4
What a crazy deal!
It’s not a perfect lens, but a crazy good deal

Is this Weather sealed?
Great comparison. I was wondering about the sharpness differences when they’re both wide open. Is the Sigma sharper or the Sony?

Thx, I thought the same!
I am wedding filmmaker Sir, I can use this lens on FX30, it will not cause focus issue in low light.
The Sigma 50mm f1.4 DH DM is a great choice also because the rumored new 50mm f1.4 GM will be almost €1000 more expensive than the Sigma(!) in Europe.
I would have Sigma Art everything if they had the particular lenses available at the time I needed them.
I’m going with Sony for Sigma vs Canon for price + build quality

The sea is also purple on the 2000 dollar Sony. Just a little less
3:41 sigma doesn't focus background, background is still blurry but sony snaps immediately, sharp background sharp foreground.
Its not a fair comparison. I mean shoot bulb. Just try to make full body shot on f1.2 and f1.4 and you obviously will see the difference.
man i am so late......I have been super busy. Been trying to grind like crazy lately. Can't even keep up with my TH-cam lately. Great review as always! Focus breathing is pretty bad but man looks good.
Thanks man! Now get back to the grind!

Get the A7C! Same form factor as the a6400 (maybe a little bigger) but it’s the most affordable full-frame camera that Sony has right now!
@@SidneyDiongzon so do a full frame ok what about lens I do want to do some video and other shots forgive me I might not use the right lingo. I want to start with Astro
Great job Sidney. I would agree. The Sigma is so much cheaper and 1.4 to 1.2, most people would never know the difference. Great video!!
But the 1200usd difference is very significant tbh. 1.2 is more of a flex thing from sony.
@@nyanyamero I would agree. I have to agree that the money saved can go towards more gear!!
I shoot a lot street and the sigmas weigh just bums me out
Hopefully sony’s upcoming 50 1.4 gm will be smaller/lighter and not toooooo overpriced

Still not enough reason for me to trade in my Ziess 55 1.8
Please, man, can you explain about Ziess 55, cos I must to decide about it or sigma 50mm f1.4 . Can you help me ?

멋진 리뷰야.. 수고 했어.
Thanks so much!
$850 is killer. with $1000 extra you can get other nice lens.
Not a good comparison. One is 1.2 and the other 1.4. How can you compare the price. Do you compare 1.8 and 1.2 prices? Nope
@@Chris-ey7zy 1.2 GM is fantastic. People should get it if they have extra $$ to spend. But 1.4 sigma will get your job done as well.

Better Bokeh 😉 more savings

i will not choose this lens after watching Gerald's video 🤣
