Brilliant. I haven't seen a better teacher ever. Articulated, perfect rhythm and just the right amount of words, besides a very good quality image, voice and sourronding Well done, It is very difficult to find this quality on Internet!

That was pretty cool, I never knew that was a feature. It would be pretty interested to try to see how my house shadows in the yard.

Hello. Thank you for this tutorial. What can I do if my location in not uptaded? My neighborhood is new and does not appear. So I built the house but can't proceed with shadowing without a proper location and positioning the house. Thank you!

What versions of SketchUp support the capability to add location/geocode and then set the angle of the sun at different times of the year? I want to design a porch so that I have sun in the winter and shade in the summer.

once you establish your location will the SU north arrow change from magnetic to solar? This question seems to have been brought up many times in the forums and never satisfactorily explained. Perhaps it was more confusing when the location was established via google earth. or asked another way, when overlaying a site plan over google earth will the north arrow need to be adjusted for one's location? What you just showed here seems simple enough. Tx.

No clue. Does it really matter if you're just looking at shadow orientation? They should be right regardless...

@@Thesketchupessentials It matters for my site plan (drawing). I know what the declination is at my site (fortunately). Others might not know and this info is so basic to siting a building.

Very nice. A not so quick, long-winded question:
How does one import accurate sun path by proper latitude/longitude, date, and time into video games?
Torque 3D - Legacy World Editor is an unmitigated disaster; when it comes to modeling sun path. I refer to the video game “BeamNG Drive”, but take your pick as I’m sure there’s many video games one can site as having the same problem, as they too rely on the Torque engine for sun modeling:
    1. There is no seasonal variation- the sun is assumed to rise at 6am, culminate at 12pm, and set at 6pm, regardless of how steep or shallow north/south axis tilt is.
    2. There is no setting for specific latitude/longitude, so the sun is given no elevation angle at solar noon- relative to the difference between the sun’s declination, and the observer’s latitude. Thus placement is meaningless and path is overly simplistic and arbitrary.
    3. An axis tilt of 0°, assumes a due east rise, a zenith culmination, and a due west set- which is a preposterous assertion for anywhere, other than directly on the equator- and only on an equinox day at that!
Whatever offset to the north or south at sunrise, that same exact offset is also assumed at culmination (off zenith), and sunset.
That would put a June Solstice 60° azimuth sunrise (30° to the north of due east- in the mid northern latitudes).
At 12 noon, the path places the sun 60° elevation above due north (in the northern hemisphere, totally wrong), and a 300° sunset azimuth that evening.
Only the rise and set azimuths are correct, culmination and the rest of the paths to get there are totally wrong.
What’s more- because the program assumes a north of east sunrise to stay to the north all day long, the sun path never breaks the east-west vertical plane; to bring the sun path into the southern sky at all!
Starting north of East, but then crossing into the southern sky, only to cross north of west to later set- is an essential and very recognizable component of northern hemisphere summers. Without this aspect the model becomes totally useless, unless you pause the sun in one position and leave it there.
Other issues occur for December solstice that are equally wrong, but I’ve spoken at length on summer, so I’ll spare you any more for the time being.
    * MAIN POINT *
Do you think Google Sketch Up’s proper sun path formula can be used in these video games, lacking this proper accuracy?

This is not very useful, it's not ideal to reset the main model axis for geo locating a model because doing so messes up certain plugins. Therefore it's not ideal to rotate the model geometry, but rather instead rotate the location snapshot and terrain instead. Than from there one would have to figure out how to find true solar north. It would have been much more useful to see a real world example of that instead of this video, or perhaps both methods.....
