Why China Is Beating The U.S. In Electric Vehicles

  • The global electric vehicle market is heating up and China wants to dominate. The country has invested at least $60 billion to support the EV industry and it’s pushing an ambitious plan to transition to all electric or hybrid cars by 2035. Tesla entered the Chinese market in 2019 and has seen rapid growth.
    China sold roughly one million more EVs than the U.S. in 2020. But there are signs the U.S. is getting more serious about going electric. President Joe Biden announced a goal to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 and investments in green infrastructure. Watch the video to find out how China came to dominate the market and whether it’s too late for the U.S. to catch up.

      It's because it's not considered that useful or important. And, objectively speaking, it's not. Maybe nice to have in certain very niche cases, but not something that the average Angelino would ever use much. And, since it would cost billions, it would be at high danger of not even recouping its own construction cost. Hence, not worth building.
      If it were a great economic winner, it would have been done decades ago. The fact that it wasn't should make you question that maybe the economics are different for the US and China. Both the built structure of the societies, the spatial distribution of the population, and the nature of the infrastructure in place (more readily available gas stations make driving simpler) all make driving cars a simpler option for those few occasions when someone in Los Angeles would want to drive out to Vegas.
      For most middle class people, rushing out to the desert to gamble is honestly not something that pops up that often, to begin with. It's not a pressing travel need. Why should EVERYONE in Cali have to pay higher taxes so that a few people can have easier access to gambling? Not in the public interest.

    • @StochasticUniverse
      @StochasticUniverse 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I assume you're referring to the way in which China requires foreign companies (other than Tesla) to form 50-50 "join ventures" with Chinese companies, right? They won't allow foreign companies to compete on a fair and level playing field with domestic companies in China. The CCP has always been extremely protectionistic towards its precious domestic market and zealously defends it against any foreign company that might actually become a threat. They usually force foreign companies to transfer their intellectual property to the Chinese "partner" in the joint venture, as well, and then that intellectual property is used to compete against the foreign company, not just in China but all over the world.
      This is the formula that China has used repeatedly in multiple different manufacturing industries. It will likely not work when it comes to EV building, though, because most of the innovation is being done outside of China and foreign firms are finally starting to wise up and refuse to cooperate with joint ventures if the likely result of that "cooperation" is that the company is just signing away the fruits of their research on a delayed basis to a future Chinese competitor.

      I wouldn't consider an EV unless you can charge at home or work. We've had EVs since 2013 and charge at home. The only time we ever need a fast charger is when we go on road trips. Tesla superchargers have been the best but Electrify America is also coming along for non-Tesla cars. If the car you are looking at qualifies for the tax credit, I would also suggest looking at leasing since it greatly subsides the payments. We were able to lease two BMW i3s for a net cost of less than $100/month back in 2014.

    China has multiple points on why they sell so much electric cars.
    1) they are making cheap as well as expensive EVs. You can basically get an EV for every pocket.
    2) incentives. As pointed in the video, they subsidise a lot of the price to help move from the tradicional ICE engines.
    3) public transportation. You can move around town, between towns or cross country with planes, trains, metro, electric buses so you dont need a car to travel the 1000 km between destinations.

      Govt. made harder ( expensive with lottery system) to get ICE licence/number plate of car. For many evs u don't need to licence cars immediately. It’s even harder to get dealership licences to sell ICEs or open new ICE showrooms.
      Besides, govt. isn’t supporting ICE makers for their future economical growth & ordered all ICE makers to go for ICE by certain times otherwise they will face serious consequences.
      Besides, EVs got Direct govt. mone(tax payers money) aka investment to make evs , also people who buy evs get tax cuts & licences very easily.
      Ev dealerships & showrooms get permission easily. EV companies enjoys some sort of tax holiday.

    I however feel a bit of empathy to "fuel cells" that has long been explored by Toyota. Hydrogen may be too difficult to handle, but if the global R&D investment has been as heavy as that on solid batteries, then the tech might have taken off with methanol.

    • @Sarge92

      actually hydrogen has been quietly undergoing its own tech boom we are working on solid hydrogen fuel cells now that solve most of the issues with hydrogen
      they store the hydrogen in a solid carbon nanotube matrix that allows for the hydrogen to be stored safeley
      it cant ignite
      it does not need to be under pressure
      it does not leak
      it can be charged (or filled i suppose) infinatley with no degredation in performance
      it might even become a thing that we dont even bother charging EV's anymore we may just end up pulling into a gas station pulling out the spent hydrogen fuel cell putting in a new one and the old one gets sent back to be refilled

In fact, US lead in technology starting in the 1950s owed a large part to government funding in NSF, DARPA etc... but it is politically risky.

    Of course, any country could dominate the U.S. with smaller and more efficient vehicles, EV or otherwise. Where I live in NYC, people seem to enjoy driving oversized gas guzzlers. I suppose they equate vehicle size with wealth and they need to impress other people/friends/women/neighbors, etc. Also, the more powerful the vehicle, the faster they can get from traffic light to traffic light. I have neighbors who drive fairly large SUVs and there's usually only the driver in them. There's also this weird trend for white-collar employees to drive pickup trucks without having any payloads. Go figure. I can't imagine any of those people buying smaller EVs unless the government forced them to. I'm 73 and I get around on my two bikes and a dual-motor electric scooter. I also have my senior transportation pass. I could easily afford some high-end vehicle but I like the exercise although the roads in NYC are in horrible condition. Still, I can easily food shop at local stores. Being retired, I simply don't need to own a car anymore. If an EV the size of a smart car was available with a true range of 100 miles, I might consider it but I still don't even need that. Anyway, I suppose real men have to drive large and expensive vehicles to make themselves feel they're living the good life. Me, I enjoy riding my bike for miles and that makes me feel I'm living the good life.

In less than 5 years, the cost of a battery pack and electric motor will be unequivocally less than a comparable ICE and transmission and continue to drop as the technology improves as it is a far less mature technology than the ICE and transmission.
      No the biggest issue will always be battery supply. No matter how much the battery technology improves and the cost efficiency of production, if only 10 million battery packs a year can be produced in the next 10 years up from the current 3 million battery packs produced in 2020, EVs will never be able to be the dominant vehicle sold in a 100 million annual and growing vehicle market, with China taking the large majority of batteries and Europe taking the next largest chunk. The US market is about 16 million new cars a year and they could only acquire almost 300k EVs in 2020 with waiting lists. Good explanation. But I think you should ve taken into consideration that the demmad for energy will increase with eletric cars and new wind and solar parks will be constructed, not mentioning, the material for recharge points. That wouldnt pollute more?

    • @tinytownsoftware3837
      @tinytownsoftware3837 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would. Not to mention all the batteries that we currently do not even recycle. Solar and wind will not be able to meet the energy demands of so many people charging. So the electricity must come from either nuclear or coal or natural gas. And since environmentalists hate nuclear for some reason, we will overwhelmingly charge electric cars using natural gas and coal.

      Exactly. With EV sales barely reaching 2-3% of total new car sales in over 10 YEARS, it is pretty clear that nothing will happen unless the government subsidizes these things like crazy, which won't happen. The only reason EVs are doing so well in Norway is because of extreme government intervention.
