    New sub!! I watch all the other similar channel and I can now say that the sweet spot for sailing content is 1) couple quit jobs and buys an affordable but seaworthy yacht in need of some TLC to go cruising (less than $100k up front for the yacht that can cross an Ocean safely..doesn't matter about post purchase payments as the viewers never add these up) 2) some repairs required which are done by the couple without too much trouble (no complaining in video and most work appears to be done by themselves - making it look easy / possible) - boat scrubs up to be beautiful and something that anyone would love to live on (not a rotting tub) 3) thrifty lifestyle ensues focus on living a life without much and being in touch with the outside world (mother nature calling the shots) seeing marine life and flora and fauna not seen by the usual city dweller 4) cruising multiple locations and meeting the local ppl (something a busy exec doesn't do on a fly in fly out trip to Hawaii etc) & experiencing life like the locals 5) info on the marine related products now and then (not over done) 6) overcoming challenges (high winds - anchors drag, pirates etc) 7) healthy and fit - but healthier that they are sailing not sitting in a burger joint getting fat (that plays on the theory that watchers have that they will be healthier quitting their job and sailing) 8) bikini shots 9) insights into relationship issues on board (how living in a caravan on water is in real life) 10) extended cast of friends and family come and go in and out and we hear their back stories from time to time (circles of friends ..family)...

    You have the perfect recipe for a great sailing channel. Handsome fella, pretty girl, and plans for great destinations. The boat rebuilding is something the rest of the channels don't have. I love it! Thanks so much!

      Awwww, thank you! We weren't sure if people would like watching the whole boat building process on video, but I think it actually is a good fit and a better representation of before and after, vs just the photos. Thank you for following along through the whole adventure!

    Keep up the great work! It will pay off, and you'll be sailing the Arctic in a beautiful and sound boat in no time at all. There is so much fulfillment in repairing a boat yourself and getting it back in the water. God Bless!

    Look'n good guys! We're excited to sit back relax and watch your channel grow! Looks like a top notch job on the refit.

      Thank you! I'm sorry we never had you out to see it when you were in FL. We're always crazy busy though, putting our heads down to work for 6-8 weeks straight and then leaving the boat for a much needed break. :)

    There's nothing more satisfying, then repairing your own boat, as to having it restored by a professional company..Good luck in your future sailing..

    I've been reading your blog for about half a year now, but I'm really glad you guys have started vlogging. This video does such a superior job of documenting. Hope you guys get a decent following here soon and keep the vidoes coming!

      We loved Horta, but never got the chance to hang out at the famous Peters. Every time we walked in, the place was packed, so we'd mozy on over to a different spot. I'm sure it was an awesome spot to bartend.

I laughed when you said you were working in the AC and Matt was sweating outside, glad that unit is still keeping you two chilled and productive! Your boat looks AWESOME, can't wait to see her all put back together! Best of luck and keep up the great video work, you'll be back to sailing in no time! Big hugs, Jelene!

      Yes, of course! I feel horrible, getting back to you has been on my to-do list for literally two months now. Yay, a new series of sailboat refurbishing vids... I really am a big fan. Plus of all my sailboat channels you two are the only ones that made it to the Azores, which is way cool as far as I'm concerned being way out in the Atlantic. Thumbs up Subscribed.

    Know this is quite old, but if you still have/get the mosquito problem again, grow some pots of quick growing Lemon grass an put them in the boat at before dusk, also of course do the precautions of no standing water nearby. But also have plans for a trap for them, comes from the middle east, where they can be quite bad in places, just a picture w/instructions and it's made out of old 2 liter bottle, so if interested let me know and I'll send it via your email if I can find it somewhere. Love the videos, and I'm Jay, have commented on your blog recently after finding you, and your from close to my area, and I love the sailing life! Keep it up, but most of all remember to be good to each other, as projects can be weary on relationships at times, and wouldn't want to see you 2 fall into that aspect.

  • @jondh140884
    @jondh140884 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I knew I recognised that graveyard from your other video! So many boats in there, but the yard owner said most of them are actually fully paid up, just left unused! I was down there a month ago to have a at what turned out to be a piece of rotten junk and I spent a lot of time having a look around the yard. My wife and I are gonna be flying into Miami in a couple of weeks to start boat hunting, buy something and get it ready for live-aboard cruising. We've already been travelling for four years so the boat life is next! I must have walked right past you or your boat at some point while I was talking to a few of the cruisers in the work yard. If you hear of anything else for sale suitable for cruising I'd love to hear about it.
    Awesome videos, they're making me feel good about what we're about to take on ourselves, especially the engine restart episode!
    You can find us over at Two Monkeys Travel on Facebook if you want to see whatever we end up with at some point!
    Good luck with everything and thanks for the motivation!
    Best,
    Jon

    • @MJSailing
      @MJSailing  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jon! It's actually funny a lot of comments we've heard from people that have somehow ended up here but could never really find exactly what they're looking for. It can be a tough search finding the right cruising boat, especially if you're looking to put a bit of time and effort into fixing one up. South Florida is a great place to look though, I'm sure you and your wife will be able to find something while you're down this way.
      If you let us know roughly what size you're looking for, your budget, and intended cruising grounds (you can PM those details), Matt can let you know a few makes and models to possibly keep an eye out for.
      I just checked out your Facebook page and it appears as if you and your wife *have* done quite a bit of traveling over the past few years. I think you'll really enjoy the cruising lifestyle once you start. It's too bad we didn't run into each other, I'm sure there would have been a lot of stories to share between the four of us.
      Good luck with your boat hunt, and we'll be following along to see how it all works out. And if you find yourself in Indiantown again, make sure to give a knock on the metal boat in the corner and say hi to us. :)
      Take care,
      Jessica

    I probably saw you guys in the work yard. I was working on our old trawler neverland across from the work yard office. Splashed about a month ago. Loved walking/driving around the yard and seeing the potential of some of the forgotten about boats in there. Let us know if you are passing through Jupiter. We are anchored just south of the indiantown bridge. We could do a collab video!

    • @MJSailing
      @MJSailing  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sure we must have passed you by a few times! The work yard is hopping now, people have to wait days to get a space in there. We're just jealous of the people like you who get to leave it after only a few weeks. ;) We'll let you know if we pass through Jupiter, but we won't be on the move until at least the new year. Very impressed. Lot's of infer was missed but just seeing tow people working well as a team was heart lifting. Epoxy has characteristics unlike varnishes which describes a huge variety of concoctions. Basically the first coat is applied with a no more than 10% lacquer thiner to the resin part before the hardener. If a tack cloth is used more sand will be needed.
    With anything "marine" there is always another question or extenuating circumstances.
    For instance, epoxy is prone to UV exposure so the top varnish coats protect it from the sun.
    When coating floors or surfaces subject to punishment it is best to add a fine mat or window screen that has had the silicone washed or removed from it.
    Prep for wood is always an argument (ask 5 sailors, get six opinions). It begins with a tack cloth, acetone wipe down and even heating the wood in the sun or whatever to get a grain to open up. Slow drying is better and I prefer West systems which is harder. In the corners I would use the finest matt which will act as a binder and give the wood more strength.
    Add coats per budget and time.

    We tried the epoxy and found that it didn't last with out at least 12 coats of varnish, for UV protection .The wood deteriorated under the epoxy and left large voids and discolored wood. Ended up stripping it all off and went back to varnish 14 coats it was easier to repair and looked much better as well as holding up better. The UV in the tropics was brutal on the finish but with the varnish we could sand until we got a surface we could work with. Cheers Dan.

      1Tane55,
      You had UV issues with the interior varnish? We have no exterior varnish, unlike our last boat, and never experienced interior varnish issues due to UV. Surprised it was an issue

    I love reading a good novel. However, for the detail and craftsmanship that you 2 are undertaking, a vlog just does it so much more justice and compliments your efforts 10 fold!! Would it be worth the effort to make some temporary insect screens!

      @MJSailing  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Jack! We had talked about making temporary bug screens, but with all the other projects we've got going on at the moment they've always just fallen to the bottom of the list. Guess we'll have to wait just a little bit longer until the finial ones are completed. :)

    I know this is suppose to be about the amazing job they are doing breathing life back into this beautiful boat, reminds me of a song by Shinedown called SECOND CHANCE, but what a gorgeous couple they are, both very fit, jessica could be a model, she is stunning to look at.

    You needed to learn about the technique of "tipping" . You apply the paint with a West Marine low foam nap roller made for applying interior marine paint. You apply the paint with the roller over a small section and then you take a high density foam paint brush and apply smooth long strokes over the rollered on paint, which has an orange peel pebble surface. The foam paint brush eliminates all of the little pebble pock marks in the rolled paint, leaving long stripes of paint which should smooth out completely if the temperature and humidity are what are recommended for applying the paint.

      We've done rolling and tipping on our exterior paint of the boat, but I don't know....personally I kind of like the visible brush strokes on the interior. It's a battle the two of us keep having. :)

We've been planning our trip and getting our boat ready - But having to build it first?! Check out the early stages of our trip.. We would love to know what you thought as seasoned pros!
