      That's basically what she got, since there were about ten skaters after her (a few in her group weren't shown in the video). Getting a 5.9 when not in the final group was unheard of.

    Ito should have won the long program that night... her long program was arguably as much as 10 or 15+ years ahead of its time. She had more technical content then the winner of the 2006 Olympic Games 18 years later!

      @@scottw6704 My theory is that she should have had 6.0's on the technical mark. There was nobody in the competition with the technical arsenal to even come close to what Ito did. I was only a few months old when this broadcast aired so obviously I don't remember enough to say whether or not it was live in any time zone in USA, but I noticed how much more smooth and live feeling this broadcast was compared to the current ones. Today the Olympic broadcasts feel so edited and choppy... plausibly live is a thing of the past in Practical terms. Watching this also made me appreciate Jim McKay, who had to be one of the best ambassadors for figure skating who ever lived. He may not have known much about the sport at the beginning of his career but over time you could tell he enjoyed calling it and made it interesting for the casual fan. RIP.

    You cannot rank Manley 1st in the FP and rank Ito 2d or 3d! Manley has the same athletic style as Ito, but only 4 triples (2 with a huge set up), while Ito had 7 and a triple-triple ! The marks are just ridiculous for so many skaters who were good in the figures or the SP but not in the FP (I mean look at Ivanova's 2d mark, her FP was not only a technical flop but a shame in terms of artistry, yet she gets only marks in the 5s for the 2d mark; and even her 1st marks are inflated, as she does *nothing*, not even a good spin). Witt got so lucky, indeed, but her posing is remarkable and dramatic; it didn't bother me as I found it dense but I agree in terms of pure skating and technical content, I would never have given more than 5.5. I think Debi Thomas's style was really lacking here, she appears slow and doesn't always have a good posture.

    • @skaterboy-cz9wj
      @skaterboy-cz9wj 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      This would only play into luck Witt. That woman has a horseshoe up her butt. If she skated poorly everyone else would do worse. She never got humbled even when she returned in 1994 the judges had the opportunity to sewer her but they didn't. Has Trenary done one more triple I would have had her ahead of Witt. and of course Kadavy was sick. Witt won two close olympic golds Manley deserved gold for overall performance. Ridiculous how close Witt was. Witt had 4 triples but all four were the garbage triples. Manley had a balanced program and no way should Witt be only one spot behind her. Remember back then it was a different scoring system. Anyways what is done is done.

I don’t understand how any coach and choreographer thought this look (along w/ cheap look spangly saloon girl costume), is superior to the ‘less is more’ looks that Dorthy Hammil, Peggy Flemming, and Janet Lynn had before this crop of skaters at the Calgary Olympics.
