Admiral Duncan could be lost, not because of any licensing issue, but because it was one of about six popular venues bought by a company called Stonegate (Compton's, Soho. ..The Admiral Duncan, Soho. ...The Kings Arms, Soho. ...Duke of Wellington, Soho. ...Salsa!, ...Halfway 2 Heaven, The Strand. ...Retro Bar, The Strand). All of this was within about a decade when property/pub prices were at a peak. Essentially, they paid too much. They survived Lockdown, but the indications they are not going to survive the cost of living crisis. At the end of the day, though, Stonegate as a company has no gay provenance, like so many so-called pink businesses. Again, it is one of those aspects over which the Mayor of London has so little control. The villain of the piece, for me, has always been Westminster City Council and Soho Estates that have sought to gentrify the area. Soho became a gay hub because it was run down, essentially, and rates and rents were affordable. Bars became gay because mainstream businesses didn't see enough revenue in them. It was the same for Earls Court, Kings Cross, Shoreditch and Vauxhall, but now an overheated property market and rip-off landlords and developers have kicked out so many old business. This has happened so extensively, that there is now no new down-at-heel zone for a gay business to migrate to and start over.
Stonegate are in big trouble. They treat their staff like crap.. and appoint managers without a clue. Staff do the minimum possible for crappy zero hours pay not knowing if they are even working until they arrive.. often to be sent home.. with no compensation for out of pocket expense like bus fares etc.. My other half was working for them last year.. It has been the mark of this campaign, led by the Tory back office, to denigrate Khan every step of the way. As Khan himself says, it's not dog-whistle politics, but full on megaphone politics. It's bad enough that Tory polices are built on hate and derision, but now, how they conduct themselves is with rancour and bitterness.
@@JesusLovesYou-w4s Very immature approach to debate. Khan did indeed issue guidelines to his staff which said that a white family doesn't represent Londoners and there are many examples of him being arrogant and rude in the London Assembly. He is responsible for the direction of policing which has seen Gaza protests go underpoliced with officers who have no idea what the signs say and are easily intimidated and conviced that an unlawful sign is actually fine meanwhile St Georges day march is policed with horses and aggressive and provocative tactics. He is ideologically opposed to effective stop and search measures and refuses to accept that immigration has a huge effect on housing. He may win in the bubble of London but he will never win a general election.
He doesn't have the power to raise wages, that's up to employers or central government to raise the minimum wage. Also it's a Tory law that lets Europeans and other foreigners work for less. That was actually illegal under EU law. Everyone had to be paid minimum wave regardless of where they came from. Not any more! So now all those people they're bringing in on emergency visa's to do jobs we desperately need doing are doing it for less than a British worker, which is hilarious because the leave sider were saying that kind of thing had to stop so we needed to leave the EU! Funny that isn't it? Almost like they lied. Oh.

Surely it’s the job of a politician to promote higher wages and good conditions. Sadly like all politicians it just seems he’s in the pocket of business owners not workers. In france being a waiter is an awesome job. French people enjoy it. Why? Restaurant owners see them as human. We are addicted to cheap labour. Imo a Starbucks worker is worth a bit more than 11 quid an hour so too is a waiter. Maybe I’m too left wing. @@krob2327 Again, he doesn't have the power to change what you're asking for. He's the Mayor of London, not the Prime Minister or Chancellor. The government does nobody any favours when it pays public sector workers so poorly and doesn't give pay rises for years to keep up with inflation. It lets private companies get away with doing the same. So we're stuck in this wage stagnent hell where everything costs more but we're paid less in real terms.

Khan is rascit end off
Sadiq Khan said he will bring WrestleMania to London if he wins the election. Come on guys, let’s make it happen!
Some weeks they gave him 4 hours.. some weeks 2.. .. when he said his contract was 16 hours a week MINIMUM his boss just said "get a better job" so he did..
I so agree. That's why we need a mayor to step in and create a level playing field for Soho
“I’ll put in rent controls irrespective of the central government”. This was in your 2021 campaign, why didn’t you do it? “Central government legislation”. Terrible journalism not to follow up on that!

@hellsbells7271 When was that? I remember Zac Goldsmith led a racist campaign against Khan.
I was actually thinking that listening to the interview. A low bar to cross but still it’s a nice change of pace from what we’re used to.
@hellsbells7271another Gammon racebaiter. GET KHAN IN!
Odd how a labour mayor doesn’t want to increase wages for hospitality but wants Europeans to do the jobs for less.
Oh.
@@TalesOfWar jobs we desperately need doing ie jobs that employers offer just above the minimum wage with awful work life balance ie hospitality then moan about so called lazy Brits who would rather not be treated like slaves? Surely it’s the job of a politician to promote higher wages and good conditions. Sadly like all politicians it just seems he’s in the pocket of business owners not workers. In france being a waiter is an awesome job. French people enjoy it. Why? Restaurant owners see them as human. We are addicted to cheap labour. Imo a Starbucks worker is worth a bit more than 11 quid an hour so too is a waiter. Maybe I’m too left wing. Because otherwise it’s a case of looking the other way, accepting an under paid ‘underclass’ just so I can get a nice coffee on my way to the office
@@krob2327 Again, he doesn't have the power to change what you're asking for. He's the Mayor of London, not the Prime Minister or Chancellor. I agree with you though, we undervalue anything in this country that doesn't have an instant return on investment while paying people the absolute minimum.
The government does nobody any favours when it pays public sector workers so poorly and doesn't give pay rises for years to keep up with inflation. It lets private companies get away with doing the same. So we're stuck in this wage stagnent hell where everything costs more but we're paid less in real terms.

@@MrDesmondPotIts like congestion charge now people don't even mind it or care. I agree with the you on the whole ULEZ chatter as you say it. Plus people were acting as if they were charging everyone £12.50 when it was a small minority of people who clearly needed to give up driving for a while until they can afford it again. The charge was to discourage people to stop people to make unnecessary journeys in their non compliant cars.
