    Shylock was a victim of circumstances forced to be the villain.Time and again he is said to be greedy but in Act 3 Scene 1 he states that he wouldn't have exchanged his late wife's ring for a horde of monkeys which shows that he values emotions associated with the ring over something else.It must be taken into account that Shylock had led a life without his wife Leah which may have further provoked his attitude.

    The scene is not just about the fairness. It indirectly condemns the discrimination against the Jews as well as the legal system at that time. Even I am not a Jew, but I feel the sadness from Shylock. And I wonder that how could he live in a place where people surround him manipulate and discriminate his identity. Thank you Shakespeare.

      @@useyournogos6845yet the Christians would happily have seen the Jews burn or be purged or driven out of Venice. Shylock was living in the times and his requirement of a pound of flesh is no more outrageous than what the Christians have done to him and his people for a thousand years! “You that did void your rheum upon my beard

    This movie is soooo beautifully done. This particular scene is a masterpiece. It's a pity that this video doesnt start a few minutes before: as Shylock is getting ready to plunge his knife: the horror in Antonio's eyes meets the horror in Shylock's eyes: Al Pacino's masterly interpretation helps us realise Shylock was having second thoughts at the very last minute - signing a bit of paper is one thing, but actually killing a man out of stubbornness is another thing.
    When Portia halts him, he has a jump scare, he is woken from a sort of trance and realises he hasnt done the deed, thank goodness. Both he and Antonio have had a narrow escape.
    Notice how easily he accepts all the dreadful penalties uttered by Portia and the Duke? It's clear that he's eager to get out of this messy business. He doesnt even care anymore if his money go to his daughter's worthless lover. The only thing that breaks his spirit further is the forced conversion. (I tell you, watching his response gives me a great urge to go and hug him), he is so broken and destroyed, and his final scene - watching his friends enter the ghetto without him - is so heartbreaking...
    still the movie allows us some hope at the very end : we see Jessica cherishing her mother's ring- maybe she didnt part with it to get a monkey, or if she did, she bought it back, because the ring had great emotional value. This leaves us hoping that one day she and her dad may forgive each-other

      Shylock was greedy and intent on revenge: even when at the height he was given a way out, he was asked to be merciful, and he acted out of spite, and vengeance. And thus he is punished, more harshly than he deserves.
      But no one there is without fault - and that is the genius of it.

      Yes, but if I was Shylock, I wouldn't have waited. What do you think would have happened if this was in the modern day. I think that Antonio would have been arrested and Shylock would have lived in peace.

    • @calimar41
      @calimar41 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I think the contract would've been declared void as it is against the law; Shylock would've been jailed for extortion and Antonio would go free.
      The whole point is moot - in the modern day, Jews aren't forced to wear red hats, they are not prohibited from having property, and are thus not limited to moneylending as a profession, like they were in Venice at the time.
      Shylock is a sorry, greedy, evil man, that has been wronged and wronged and wronged till he snapped. Was he evil before? We'll never know. But he certainly was at the end.
      Does this make Antonio innocent, or good? Neither. Antonio is an arrogant fool, but he is not intentionally evil. He's just stupid, bigoted, and racist.

    Us ICSE students have to read this racist drama. The so-called kind Antonio mistreated Shylock, the 'noble' Bassanio is a talkative fool and 'virtuous' Portia is even more a racist (refer prince of Morocco). The 'cur' Shylock was fond of his wife and lost everything: his daughter. his wealth, his religion...and why a pound of flesh?? You go through so much discrimination then you are bound to feel vengeful. Moreover, Antonio AGREED to the bond, so he has to be penalised...and even if he was not, why was so much injustice shown to Shylock, especially religion..because Jews are infidels?? What's worse is to be taught by teachers who are like," Ya Antonio did mistreat him but we are not looking at that..he is the hero of the play". Hero, my foot.

      But by standards if the people watching this play at that time he was very much the villain and the whole ending scene is to send the audience home happy laughing at Shylock.
      The sad music etc is a modern thing now that we empathise with people more who are different.
      But back then this play was not a tragedy but a comedy and all these things happening to Shylock wouldve been met by raucous laughter by the crowd.

      Exactly. Antonio was supposed to be the defendant but because Shylock was a Jew, he became the persecutor. Oops, I mean prosecutor. He didn't even let him keep his religion. Antonio gave him a fate worse than death. Who do you think is worse, Portia or Antonio?! I think that Antonio is worse.

    • @heliotropezzz333

      It was unfair because Jews had very few rights in those times, they were a persecuted minority, that's one of the points of the play.

  • @satie622
    @satie622 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It's unjust, indeed, to trick and deceive Shylock but it's better than letting him kill Antonio because of his grudge. The "justice" that he claims is nothing but revenge fired by his vengeance upon Antonio. He had planned it the moment he knew that Antonio wanted to loan his money. But truth be told, he does deserve sympathy. No one should order people to change their religion because of their different beliefs.

    • @Minzalin
      @Minzalin 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Imagine being bullied your whole life, and not just you but your mother and father, and their parents, stretching back centuries. And this is not just simple bullying, but also murder, exile, theft, etc. Then you begin to understand why someone could have a mindset like Shylock's.

    • @brandonb.5304
      @brandonb.5304 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You being bullied in school is a little different than systematic discrimination against individuals because of their ethnicities or religious beliefs. Imagine being bullied for 3000 years and then you'll understand Shylock's perspective.

      It makes sense if you know the play. She had to try and disguise herself as a man in order to be able to act as defence lawyer for Antonio. A woman would not have been allowed to do it in those times.

    It's very complicated, however shylock was shown christian mercy, and should be grateful for it. That's Shakespeares genius though, we all sympathize with Shylock the most, but it is wrong to harm another human being over money. Everyone in this play sinned, but only Shylock was truly saved. It's a reflection on the degrees of sin and absolution. Speaking as a Christian all sin is punishable by death, but not physical death, spiritual death, and it is gods mercy that saved us since we are all sinners. So again shylock received the greater lesson and blessing.

    An outstanding performance by all in the scene. So sad for Shylock, he gets screwed by this court, because he is a Jew. He is the wounded party and yet, in the end he is treated like he wronged Antonio. Porsches speech of mercy rings a hallow, as does the "justice" off the court. Don't get me wrong I'm not for him taking a pound of flesh but he is still the injured party here.

    1 Timothy 6:10
    For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
    James 2:13
    For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.
    James 3:17
    But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
    The Apostle Paul speaking about the JEWISH law...
    Galatians 1:13
    For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews' religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it
    Acts 22:4
    And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.
    Acts 26:11
    And I punished them oft in every synagogue, and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly mad against them, I persecuted them even unto strange cities.
    1 Corinthians 15:9
    For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.
    Jesus speaking...
    John 15:20
    Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.
    Jesus speaking about those claiming to be of the tribe of Judah by being called "jews" when they were not...
    Revelation 2
    8 And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive;
    9 I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.
    10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.

      He lost because Portia said he could have his pound of flesh (that was in the contract) but the contract did not mention blood, so he had to take the flesh without spilling any blood or he himself would die (under the law). He knew he couldn't do it so he backed down and then they condemned him for other things because as an 'alien' (non-citizen) he didn't really have any rights or protections under the law but Antonio, as a citizen, was protected..
