Thanks for sharing your first hand experience. I am in the market for a hiking shoe and am concerned about how much more debris will likely work its way in while I am hiking.
Luckily the walking trails I use are typically free of brush, but I hear what you are saying, I have a constant fear of ticks or other insects latching-on during a hike. On long hikes, I usually wear shorts, so the tuck-in is not feasible, but I will try it on my next cool weather hike. Thank you for your comment.
Thank you for the review. After seeing Altra's gaiters I definitely see your point about Topo's gaiters. I only care about the rocks and will likely DIY may way out of the problem. These gaiters are glorified socks and should not cost over $20. :)
I agree about the cost. The profit must be high. If you do a DIY solution, you might want to post it so others can learn as well. I only wish I had the tools and skills to do it myself. Unfortunately, I am stuck with making the purchase, but it is worth it for me. Thank you for your comment.
Hello friend, I live outside of USA, I am going to buy a new pair of shoes Online, I already own a pair of Salomon Men Size 9, I saw in your video that you own an Altra lone peak 4, Altra Olympus, Topo trailventure, Solomon boots. My question is: Did you buy them all in the same Men US size?
Hi. I have learned to wear a shoe that has room for swelling and movement. I get wide shoes from Salomon, but the Altras and Topos were not available in wide, but they are designed to be quite wide in the forefoot. Recently, I have started "sizing up" by 1/2 a size US. So while I would ordinarily wear a size 11, I have bought the Topos and Olympus in 11.5. I find the extra length and width lead to more comfort. The Altra Olympus are sized a little small, so I would definitely get them at least a half size larger. Best of luck with you shoe purchases.
I’ve had the same pair of Inov8 trail running gaiters for over 5 years and 1000+ miles including racing the North Face Endurance Challenge and bagging dozens of Colorado 14ers and 20+ mile hikes. Very surprising your gaiters are only lasting a single hike.
Amazing durability, I will have to look at them. I don't know, maybe I knock my feet together or into rocks, but they always seem to wear through at the ankles, of course, this is wearing gaiters over a mid-height shoe. I get close to a year of wear on a low shoe. And, the gaiters wear through on a rim to rim to rim, which is about 50 miles, but yes, they go through for me on one hike. 🙂
For me, the best shoes so far have been the Solomon ultra 3 wide mid Gore-Tex, but they do not make them anymore, and the ultra 4s are not as good a shoe. I have done rim to rim to rim hikes in Altra lone Peak 3s, but never the newer model. I do not think they will have enough cushioning for me with the rocky trail. I am currently experimenting with the Olympus 5 mid Gore-Tex, which is quite comfortable, but I am unsure if it’s durability. The other alternate is the topo. I am hiking rim to River tomorrow in the Olympus, and maybe I should do a review of the various shoes when I get back home. Thank you for your comment and question.
I hiked this weekend in the Olympus 5 mid GTX, and they did pretty well, there were no durability issues. The cushioning is nice on the the downhill sections. The mid did chafe a bit on one ankle, but relacing seemed to help. I will try to post a more thorough review in the upcoming weeks.
I have been seeing more of them on the trail, now I know why. Perhaps I'll give them a try. Thank you for the information.
Let us know how it works out. I wear gaiters on every hike.
Thank you for sharing. Great information.
Thank you for watching.
Ur an inspiring person, fit, suntanned, outreaching, a survivor. Keep doing you! 👍
Thanks, you are so kind!

The gaiters make a real difference, especially in a low-cut shoe.
This is a wonderful video and thank you so much for sharing. I have enjoyed it very much. Good job 👍
Thanks for watching!
Traditionally long pants are tucked into the gaiter which help keep bugs and ticks off.

I use gators all the time. I really love dirty girl gators, they have so many different patterns .
thanks
Thanks for the tip. The same old patterns get boring after a while. I will have to check them out!
Great tips. Thank you.

I had never heard of these before. Cool!
They have made a real difference for me on the trails I hike. No more stopping to empty the shoes. Thanks for your comment.
스패치가 편해 보입니다. 눈이 많을 때는 좀 작지 않을까요. 좋은 소개 감사합니다 . 9:13
There are different gaiters for snowy conditions. These are for warm weather to keep the rocks out. Thanks for watching.

Are there any shoes that have worked better for you on longer hikes than the Altra Olympus?
