Hiccup lost his leg because when Toothless was saving him while they were falling the only thing he could grab onto was Hiccup's leg. And since toothless is a dragon with I'm sure a strong jaw and teeth. he had to save hiccup by grabbing onto his leg which was the closest body part to him but probably severely damaged his leg, probably leading to amputation or something like that. I heard it's explained better in the books.
Those are just theories and if you think about it shouldn't there be burn marks if Toothless only grabbed onto his leg first
@@LycanSunWolf it's not just theories. Dean confirmed that Toothless panicked and grabbed Hiccup's leg cause it's been closest to Toothless. But the force Toothless had while pulling Hiccup in ripped that leg straight off. The theory you're talking about is the one where Toothless bites off Hiccups leg in revenge for his missing fin.

If you look right after Stoick says that Hiccup isnt his son, when the door closed you see in Stoick's face that he didnt even believe he just said or did that. Then after a second, he shakes it away because he's on a mission, but its pretty clear regret in his face

Nope, Toothless saved Hiccup by grabbing Hiccup's leg with his teeth.

toothless was actually inspired by the creators pet cat and he analyzed its behaviour to make his mannerisms.
