  • A Singapore Airlines flight that made an emergency landing in Bangkok on Tuesday had fallen into an air pocket in Thai airspace before it encountered turbulence, with one British man killed and seven people critically injured on board, a senior airport official said.
Suvarnabhumi airport general manager Kittipong Kittikachorn told a press conference a 73-year-old British man died during the incident, likely due to a heart attack, while head injuries were sustained among seven people critically injured. One crew member was hospitalised, he said.

Not just meeting your end in a plane crash. Looking out the window at the beautiful sky, headphones in playing your favourite song. Your seat falls beneath you and you sh*t yourself but in a blink of an eye you break your neck by the weight of a falling plane. You fall to the floor, still alive. Still falling. Forced to live out your final minutes in agonising pain. Knowing no one can get up and help you and then eventually meeting your end

I don't fly often but when I do I always think what if there is turbulence while the food trolley is doing the rounds. Those trolleys could rip through the fuselage if cruising down the plane and smashed into the roof certainlycould badly injur or kill people. Lucky that did not happen. Sad for the dead and injured but the pilot regained control and is probably due a lot of credit for landing it safely and saving so many lives.

This is why you are told to keep your seatbelt on when seated, even if the seatbelt sign is off.

People who are frequently travelling by airplanes will know about air turbulence but I gather these days it can be a bit more intense given some of the effects that Climate Change is having on the upper atmosphere.
It's very sad news to hear about the poor guy who has unfortunately lost his life because of this incident on board the Singapore Airlines flight that has had to make an emergency stop in Bangkok.
I am sorry for his wife and family that he leaves behind and for everyone else on board who had to witness his unfortunate death.
Also, there are several other people who have injuries, who presumably weren't wearing their seatbelts.
Please, passengers unless you have an underlying medical issue that makes wearing the seatbelt on board an airliner difficult - please make sure that your own seatbelt is on firmly and securely - particularly when the captain has turned the FASTEN SEATBELT sign on..
So, if anything like this does occur then you are in the best place to survive it uninjured.
I hope that the injured all make a full recovery.

Cabin crew notified the pilot of injured passengers and he chose to land the plane.

Upon landing they then discovered the dead guy. Likely a heart attack he was 73 and probably jabbed.

    Dropping 7000ft in 5 minutes.
Gives you a good idea how long you will be living in stupefying terror if your plane was to crash.
(One of the many reasons why I won't fly).
I don't care about the car:plane crash statistics. At least when you're driving a car, you have more chances to act in a way to avoid an accident. Commonly, car accidents involve very few people. Pile ups happen, but only rarely.
In a plane - your life is solely in the hands of the pilot, not knowing how reckless, or experienced, or healthy, or depressed he is. And then there's the plane. You get in it, not knowing how reliable it is, if there's a bomb on board, if there are hijackers aboard ready to start taking out hostages, if it is going to fly into a flock of poor birds, or hit a critically bad pocket of turbulence.

This has nothing to do with the type of aircraft.
And, in actual fact I think you will find that Singapore Airlines generally favour Airbus a380 and a350 most of the time these days.
Couldn't say for sure if they own any Dreamliners but I don't think so.
I know that they have some 777.
Don't get me wrong, I am no fan of Boeing either but air turbulence and air pockets have nothing whatsoever to do with the plane having been built in Seattle USA or Toulouse France.
