  • In this SUPboarder 'How to video' we take a basic look at getting out over waves on a SUP. When you first start getting into surf you will probably find yourself paddling out on your knees a fair bit. But ideally you should be aiming to paddle out standing up. With practice this will allow you to paddle over bigger waves and conserve more energy for the fun stuff... surfing! We go over the basic principles to help get you out over the waves in no time.
    Boards used in the video :
    JP Australia 9'8'' Fusion 152L
    Fanatic 8'7'' Stubby Foil 120L

    Great video and was able to apply it. How you mention “you’ll be amazed the size of whitewater you’ll be able to get over”, I have that in my head when I think no way I’m going to make it over but then I give it a try and punch through. I feel like this is an underrated fun aspect of sup surfing that I didn’t get when prone surfing. Hoping over the waves reminds me of snowboarding.

    Putting this technique into use is actually quite fun. I reckon you also earn some respect from the prone surfers when they see you paddling out and over the waves they have to duck-dive through! It feels like a minor achievement when you surf in on a wave, turn off it without falling off and manage to paddle out-back, all without falling into the water.

    Love the video. Would love to see a video on waiting out back on your knees to avoid falling, and then transitioning to standing and surf stance when a wave approaches. I spend most of my time on flat water and struggle to stay upright on the ocean. Thank you!

      Thanks for the suggestion. If you're struggling to stand when waiting for waves, then either the conditions are quite bumpy or your board is slightly too small (more likely too narrow). It would be worthwhile to try a wider board next time and see if there is a difference. Thanks, Beau

    I starting SUPing last month and yesterday went to trebarwith strand and started trying to surf some of the waves. Makes me happy that this is filmed in cornwall as everything else online is from hawaii or australia. Will be back surfing soon

      What a spot. Used to surf and SUP surf up there a fair bit. Not many SUP surfers up there. Respect the line up and you will get loads of fun waves. And o yes bud, we are based in Cornwall and super stoke to be taking over the world LOL😀. Thanks Reuben

    This training video is great, please keep up the hard work and thanks for your training / time
    It's hard for me to keep my feet stance like yours, I keep pulling my self off the board while paddling.

      Just spend some good time focusing on the stance and paddling on flat water. If you're pulling yourself off the board you possibly need to bend your knees a little bit more. I hope that helps thanks Reuben

    Great video -can you apply these techniques in the 10ft plus waves too?

    • @SUPboardermag
      @SUPboardermag  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      When it gets bigger the technique will be absolutely the same, you will just have to apply a bit more back foot pressure when pushing out over the wave so the white water doesn't catch as the wave goes underneath you. But there will be a point where you will not be able to paddle fast enough to maintain stability as the wave hits you. For me white water at about head height it's getting near the limit unless I am on a bigger more stable board. Thanks Reuben

    What are your tips for the scenario where you aren't going to make it over. Do you jump off to the side and in to the wave or what's best?

    • @SUPboardermag
      @SUPboardermag  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes if I realise I'm not going to make it over the wave I will kick the board out sideways(ish) and jump forwards over the white water away from my board. or you can do this th-cam.com/video/wx9SCbz0R7c/w-d-xo.html Thanks Reuben

    Is this any of this applicable to an iSUP or should I not even try?

    • @SUPboardermag
      @SUPboardermag  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the technique is the same. Not as easy but yes get out there and give it a go. 🤙

    can you still surf with one bigger rudder than 3 smaller ones?

    • @SUPboardermag
      @SUPboardermag  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Slater. Do you mean fins? If so yes you can surf with 1 fin or 3 fin (thruster) setup. Let me know if this is not what you mean thanks. Reuben / SUPboarder
