Robert Alfons/Hiley is quickly becoming known as a, god of the sublime with his Musical Surrealism, an alternative imagination. You're not just listening to music, instead you feel like an active participant, traveling on a "derive" ― Internationale Situationniste: The transfixed flow of unconscious thought, also recognized as Psycho-geography. I do apologize for being so deeply philosophical; however, it's the only way I've been able to consolidate my thoughts regarding Alfons. The video is perfection by which, it captures the absolutely pure and raw emotiveness set within the Urban-milieu, a poetic gentrification, and its raw grittiness. At first, this looks another guy high on LSD on a Tuesday night on Hollywood Boulevard ― Then suddenly I'm slapped back into reality when the dancer is knocked down and the tempo slowly drifts off, with the momentary traffic sounds, cutting deeply in the middle. I love the interpretive dance in the "do-it-yourself car-wash" what momentary bliss. This is an exemplary model of the "Society of The Spectacle" by Guy Debord, who would be so proud to watch this. Unfortunately, this music video doesn't receive the proper attention it deserves, but I'll add another favorite TR/ST video, which is shamefully disregarded, but in complete opposition of this masterpiece. I was hoping for at least one new track with a less processed croon.... very underrated voice IMO....I personally like his higher register vocals that really seem more evolved and nuanced as of late.... I also love the juxtaposition of his undeniable easiness on the eyes with the at times otherworldly sonic emissions his beautiful baritone beguiles with
I kinda interpret this music video as though it's an interpretive dance telling Cypher's story from The Matrix, except this time a happy ending. And Ryan Heffington looks a lot like Joe Pantoliano in that film anyways lol. And the high reverby notes where he grabs his neck, that's him waking up. The chaos and terror of the true reality drives him mad. The moment he begins running and the mood lightens slightly, that's Cypher remembering his life in the false reality, missing it. Ignorance is bliss, after all. Where he fell, that represents his decision to go through with making the deal with an agent, to send him back into the false reality. He then goes around doing everything he can to make sure his plan succeeds and he can finally get the peace he always wanted, even if it meant to kill. At 3:43, that's where Cypher dies. However, his request from the agent to return into the false reality was granted anyways, even after death. His mind was still stored in the machine, placed in a new body, and back into the cycle.
