All drummers are underrated, no one gets how important a driving beat is.
Jacqueline I play the Drums. And yes it's vastly understand.
Jacqueline yep I have to agree with you on that always pushed over like there nothing
Jacqueline agreed
The bassists tho
example: Tommy Aldridge.
most underrated......Animal from the Muppets
JUGHEAD from the ARCHIES ! ah ha !HA!!
Underrated? Animal is arguably more well known than any of the names on this list.
Drumroll418 he’s known as a muppet not a drummer
That would be a cool behind the music the muppet band
Nu Metal fan Stupid Flanders, I think that just depends on who you ask. I mean, yes, most people know that Animal is a Muppet, but also I immediately know him as the drummer for the Muppet band too.
Anyone that's heard Knights of Cydonia live knows Dominic Howard is to be taken seriously.
The fact that he plays lefty is awesome too
If you listen to the drums in any muse song you know he's the real deal
@@meesswagerman4108 Exactly. I am a guitarist but I am always impressed and surprised of how underrated Dom is. People will mention all their most "extravagant" songs like Assassin or Stockholm Syndrome but drummers will know that he is above all one of the tightest drummer out there with songs like Hysteria, Animals, Glorious, Dead Inside and many more. He has the perfection of a robot and the groove of a real musician not just drummer and mostly he knows how to serve a song. Espacially with their last albums he definitely showcased that he is the perfect full package. The most and best versatile drummer of our era.
How is Taylor Hawkins underrated. He's just rated very well : one of the best drummers living on earth
He's not underrated, just overshadowed. He is a great drummer but he's in a band with one of the most famous rock drummers of all time.
Yeah, Taylor Hawkins is almost as prominent as Dave Grohl himself. Heck, those two are long-lost brothers, I swear.
Dave Grohl had been considerably dissatisfied with the previous drummer William Goldsmith, but obviously rates Taylor Hawkins as his equal (or even better than himself).
How can Taylor Hawkins ever be regarded as under-rated?
I’d personally say he’s better than Dave, in terms of diversity, Dave had his style, which no one car replicate, but Taylor can play everything🤣
@@RahimRahmat I would for sure think grohl rates hawkins higher than himself
Ikr
In what way is...CHAD FUCKING SMITH UNDERRATED!!!
Yeah I thought the same thing with Taylor from Foo Fighters!
JG 93 ikr!!!!
Yeah, that's a fucking stretch.
That's how I felt about Terry Bozzio.
Watch mojo is not something to watch if your actually looking for an accurate list,in there top 10 songs by bands they just pick all the singles in order of best selling,it doesn't matter wether not its actually good.
Matt Cameron (Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Temple Of The Dog)
Dave Abbruzzese (Pearl Jam)
Jimmy Chamberlin (Smashing Pumpkins)
Doug Clifford (Creedence Clearwater Revival)
Ben Gillies (Silverchair)
Tre Cool (Green Day)
Stephen Perkins (Jane’s Addiction)
Sean Kinney (Alice In Chains)
Dale Crover (Melvins)
John Dolmayan (System Of A Down)
Sky P this is it chief
Dave! Yeees
I think Taylor Hawkins should be on there
I totally agree
FUCK MOJO
Thanks for adding Matt Tong and Dom Howard to this. They’re so underrated it hurts
Man matt is one of the best rollers of all time in my opinion. Its so clean
Reni is an absolute natural. When you isolate his drumming you can feel the flow...it's like waves in a storm.
His drumming on Begging You is fucking thunderous
Aye, but the video that they showed had Robbie Maddix’ face on the dancer ‘cos he’d left by the time it was released!
I’ve seen the Roses a few times but now the latest was with Reni. The difference was almost unbelievable. He’s incredible.
Taylor Hawkins and Chad Smith are far from underrated! And don't get me wrong I love their music!
I totally agree with you 100% I think Barry Kerch from Shinedown is completely underrated!
Pedro Santos Taylor Hawkins is an asshole
why you say that?
Adam Guitar so r u for saying that
I disagree. Most people who appreciate music recognize both are huge talents, but RELATIVE to their more famous bandmates, they get less credit.
Dave Grohl is a legend on the drums, so naturally Hawkins gets less attention *compared* to him.
Same with Smith vs the more celebrated Flea, etc.
Drumming itself is underrated. I never got respect until I started swapping with my mates.
Jojo_is_a_GO Yeah, it's literally about the guitarrrr... pfft.
Jojo_is_a_GO agreed. just being average is hard enough . and for a non drummer it is impossible.
A band is as good as their drummer they said, well said.
you are damn right. if some drummer have ambitions to be famous, he has to leave drums and take some other instrument or start singing, like phil collins or dave grohl does. its not fair! :)
Daniel Mathia I disagree. Nicko Mcbrain, Ian Paice, Bill ward, Neil Peart are very well known. The problem is if you are not the singer, you need to have your own style to get noticed and the mentioned above do
Soundgarden's matt cameron?
Matt Cameron was under-appreciated? In what time of history? RHYTHM is what catapulted SEATTLE into the mainstream. Sure as fuck wasn't vocals/lead guitar.
Shane Adams Dude, I’m pretty certain vocals are pretty fucking important in grunge. Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Nirvana and Pearl Jam all had (or have) amazing vocalists. And still, Matt Cameron isn’t underrated at all but IMO not appreciated enough (like most good drummers)
"Underrated", bro !
I think Dave Abbruzzese is more underrated than Matt Cameron.
I think Rick Allen from Def Leppard is SUPER underrated, especially considering he has one arm!
Jaxon Jaxonfied if you can’t tell the difference between one arm Allen and two arm Allen, doesn’t that go to show that really was good?
Jaxon Jaxonfied wait chill bro I like Def Leppard
Jaxon Jaxonfied Rick Allen’s drums sound cool
He has one arm and is still infinitely better than Lars Ulrich 😂
David Nissim - no disrespect to Rick in any way... Rick is awesome... and there’s no sense in comparing... but in response to your comment, you must not have heard - or attempted to play along with - anything on And Justice For All. When you master “Blackened”, give me a call. 👍🏽
Dom(MUSE) is a very underrated drummer, but you just cant put him in the list and not show FUCKING "ASSASSIN". HE IS A BEAST IN THAT SONG
Alejandro Castillo Trujillo at least they put Map of the Problematique, but I still agree lol
Howard makes Assassin the masterpiece that it is.
How about alex van halen? He lives in his brother's shadows for a long time we forgot that he plays hot for teacher!!
He wasn't that great when the band first formed but he got really great later on in his career and is underrated because that is a rare thing to happen to a drummer in a huge band.
@@Veggamattic I disagree he showed some of his best drumming when the band started
@@your_boy_vesp2981 Watch some live stuff and you can tell it's not close.
@@Veggamattic Drugs...
Alex Van Halen is the Mick Mars of drumming
Ian Paice from Deep Purple is very underrated, Everyone says that Bonzo was the best drummer of the 70 but we also have to see how Paice plays the drums in all the albums
YES! YES ! YES!
I prefer much more Ian Paice than Bonzo. He really was in the same level to above !
Everyone forgets Mitch Mitchell easily one of the best drummers (listen to Dave Grohl and you’ll get it) especially in the 60’s and way better than Keith Moon who is overrated. Ian Paice great even played with Gary Moore easily one of the most underrated guitarist also
What does Dave Grohl have to do with Ian Paice? Grohl is a crap drummer, barely fit to be Paice’s drum tech.
John from system of a down
Cole Winter dolmayan is so underrated
Yes
So damn underrated
John Is a stud!! He cuts an entire album in a day or two then sits back and waits for the rest of the band to catch up...facts! Look it up lol
Yes. John is underrated
Matt Helders...
DitaShiteDrinks I was so disappointed, he didn't even get an honorable mention
Yeah, WAY better than Taylor Hawkins
He is my favourite drummer of all time at the end when i realised he wasnt even mentioned at all i was really dissapointed :(
He's a great writer but I think his playing is why he isn't on here, he has great stamina aswell.
+quinyc1 brianstorm requires a lot more than just great stamina...
Roger F'N Taylor
Yes!!! He could sing just one step away from Freddie and is responsible for creating one of the most iconic songs in Queen (Radio Gaga) as well as other songs like A Kind Of Magic
Which one?
I was waiting for him
Yes, Queen's early work is fucking hard to play, and has a lot of precise timing, in their mid-career songs, he kinda simplifies it, with the occasional complex beat, and their later career had even more complex and intricate drumming. I as a drummer find a lot of their music quite difficult to play, he is extremely underrated. Also, he, like Bonham, had a very fast right foot, yet most don't really notice it.
What about Duran Duran's Roger Taylor?
Ian Paice from Deep Purple is so underrated! Of course true fans of hard rock music knows him, but he never appears on such lists! Everybody talks about Bonzo, but at this time in '70 Paicey was at least that good as Bonzo was.
And Bill Ward from Black Sabath was such a great and heavy drummer!
And i think that Roger Taylor is very underrated- many people say that he wasn't that good, but honestly- i listened a lot to him as he plays, and i think that he was very good. Maybe not the best, maybe not in best 10, but still has good fills and was amazing songwriter. I don't like that people especially mens don't appreciate him because of his sweet look and handsomeness.
You women Only see how Roger Is handsome..but hes not a model he Is a musician...
Taylor Hawkins is rightfully and widely regarded as one of the best drummers in the world. Hardly underrated.
hahahaha
Something Black hahahahaha as well. Taylor is good but I wouldn’t put him in the top 10 drummers alive today
mirnessarcevic I just saw Foo Fighters live for the second time last week. You can’t understand how good Taylor is without seeing him solo live. He is absolutely incredible.
yorkey14 absolutely agree, just saw them in brisbane australia
Isabel Jones I got them in Melbourne. That’s the second time I’ve seen them and I was still absolutely blown away by how fucking incredible they are.
Taylor Hawkins and Chad Smith underrated? LOL
Eh, Taylor Hawkins really isn't all that popular in the "great rock drummers" conversation. I agree with Chad Smith though. Anyone that knows anything about drums know how talented he is.
Corey Corbett rhcp suck period
I was surprised to see Terry bozzio.
Branko Dimitrijević nope 😂😂😂
Branko dimetrioff
If Nick Manson from Pink Floyd is not on your top 10 most underrated drummers, that alone makes him the most underrated drummer.
Mason*
You suck too!
@@adriantrejo8397 pink floyd amazing band
@@diabetes1226 dummy
Pink Floyd’s my second favourite band. Adore ‘em, but while Mason had his moments, he was far from anything special. He should have Ringo’s reputation by non-drummers, not Ringo.
Am I crazy! Roger Taylor isn’t on top 10 rock drummers or top 10 underrated! He’s a fantastic drummer and he could sing almost as good as Freddie while doing complicated beats
Mitch Mitchell from the jimi hendrix experience is fanatical and most drummers don't know who he is.
Lane Jones Oh course they do!
jazzraspberry of course they do what?who does?
Most drummers know who Mitch Mitchell was. Was that so hard to understand?!!
jazzraspberry only for the fact that your very rude
That's not even very...
Matt Helders? I honestly feel like he is super underrated
I'm not even a huge AM fan but you're damn right, he is just incredible on i bet you look good on the dancefloor, fluorescent adolescents and others
Has anyone ever heard of John Tempesta? Original drummer for Rob Zombie’s band, also played for White Zombie, Exodus and Testament, and he currently is in The Cult. Words can’t even describe how underrated he is, his playing was on most of Rob Zombie’s hits.
Most drummers are underrated.
I'd put more on this list:
Brad Wilk (RATM)
Danny Carey (Tool)
Dave Abruzzese (ex Pearl Jam)
John Dolmayan (SOAD)
Danny Carey for sure but John from soad was still getting drum lessons from a guy named Pat Mcgraff in San Dimas while system had just released their Steal this Album cd.. He's not that good....however i did not see Joey jordison on your list....?
@Dafyd Maddz not by Taylor Swift...😂😂😂
@Dafyd Maddz Manard shared a Taylor meme when tools new album jumped to number 1 n nocked hers out😂😂😂 fuck the Swiftties
Brad Wilk? Seriously?
@@SandBoxAM really shithead
Chad Smith never got enough credit on drums for matching both Frusciante and Flea, two of the best guitarists and bassists of all time respectively.
Extremely mediocre drummer.
@@revyu6754 Extremely mediocre comment
@@revyu6754 LOL not true at all
Why is nobody talking about Ian Paice?
Because he's is already mentioned in top ten drummers
I don't think he's underrated. He's the godfather of heavy metal drumming.
Watchmojo forgot the existence of deep purple
He does tend to get overlooked compared to his contemporaries... People know all about John Bonham, Keith Moon, Ginger Baker and Mitch Mitchell but they often forget about Ian Paice.
@@bluesrocker91 that's unfair...if we look at the technical aspect he's way better than moon, baker or mitchell
Jimmy Chamberlain better be on the list
I only watched this video only to see if he was on the list
He isn’t on the list. Didn’t even make Honorable Mentions. That’s how underrated he is.
Jimmy Chamberlin blows many of these drummers out of the water, but often gets overlooked because of mainstream popularity.
Jimmy is an extreme talent. Plays intricate Jazz on the side of the pumpkins. He is up there with all of the greats.
Came to say this.
@@jonjonjonjonjonjonjon JON LEE ( Feeder) .Please remember him! I agree your guy should had been here as well!
So Taylor Hawkins is underrated? If rock music and/or the art of playing drums interest you just a bit you would know how big of a character and musician Taylor is...
tiggydiggy1234 If anything, Taylor is overrated.
Not at all ahaha
exactly, and he is still underrated
You are talking smack now. Taylor Hawkin is one of the few who defines this century and part of the last century drumming standards. What would you say about him that makes you say he is overrated? Please tell me 'cause i cant tell...
thats what im saying, no matter how much praise he gets, he could never be rated as much as he deserves.
I'm really happy to see Reni here.
He's so talent and cool.
Wheres Bill Ward, never hear his name when people talk about drummers, and yet he's the drummer for the founding metal band.
Seriously though, he created one of the key parts in the metal sound.
The Wizard is top ten best drum performances recorded easily
This is rock, not metal
simple, all three members of muse are underrated
There's probably already a million of these comments but mine as well add my underrated drummers.
Ian Paice - Deep Purple
Mitch Mitchell -Jimi Hendrix Experience
Bill Bruford - Black Sabbath
Alex Van Halen - Van Halen
Matt Cameron - Soundgarden
Sean Kinney - Alice In Chains
Nicko Mcbrain - Iron Maiden
Danny Carey- Tool
Brad Wilk - Rage Against The Machine
Jimmy Chamberlin - Smashing Pumpkins
Came here specifically for Topper Headon
Stephen Morris from Joy Divison/ New Order is extremely underrated. Basically a human drum machine.
Omg i fking kr
Blue Monday!
Matt Cameron, Sean Kinney, Jimmy Chamberlain, Carl Palmer, and Cozy Powell better be on the next underrated drummers list you guys make.
But,Cozy is never been underrated! That smash pumkin drummer is! So is JON LEE / Feeder from '92-'01! Please check him out! Thanks!💜
What about the drummer from SOAD
Thank FUCK jon theodore was on this list. I swear he is such an under appreciated talent.
also Comatorium not crematorium!
yeahh
Thank YOu! i thought i was the only one that noticed that. blasphemy
charney rode :)
he is highly rated, but not very famous. Drummers are usually less famous than other members of a group.
btw you could say omar rodriguez lopez is underrated.
John Dolmayan?
oh yeeaaah !
ΛLIΣП _ that's exactly what I was thinking thank you
YES!
ΛLıΣП _ I don't think that John is underrated, everybody knows his fucking awesome
Yeah, John is legend.
I feel like Phil selway should be on here (Radiohead drummer). He’s an exceptional time keeper and plays some really unique beats. He plays all sorts of time signatures and lots of different genres. He’s nothing flashy but is abslolutely talented.
He's a living metronome.
It's hard to produce a driving drum beat using a ride cymbal, and Taylor Hawkins in The Pretender is the prime example of that. Taylor is absolutely underrated. Chad Smith probably more famous, but also a guy that can drive a song along in all kinds of methods. Truly under appreciated.
Matt Tong is severely underrated still. His techniques and fills especially in the intimate album was god tier
I never knew Terry Bozzio was underrated. LOL He is a legend among drummers with a good grasp on history and good taste. :)
I agree. When you are friends with the likes of Neal Peart and Clem Burke and are held in high esteem by these men you are not underrated.
The man's a God, but when your roadie's nickname your drum set, "The HMS Bozzio"...maybe it's time to cut just one or two drums/cymbals....
I'm guessing they mean that, even though Terry Bozzio is a legit musical genius, he's not a household name a la Buddy Rich or Neil Peart. That's not really being underrated, though.
I believe they mean he's not well known to mainstream audiences ! but to more hardcore audiophiles [ what 'd you call me!?] he's definitely known and of course to drummers ! YES I count my self as one!!
Don't forget that massive kit he plays. Man... With a kit like that, he can play pretty much any style he wants. I would hate to set that thing up though man. Haha
Where is Sean Kinney?
Exactly !
Kinney is truly underrated--a great drummer IMO and essential to the AIC sound.
I knew before I even watched this that he wouldn't be on the list. Alice in Chains overall is criminally underrated. Probably because they actually play REAL rock music. A lot of the "rock" I hear these days would be better suited for easy listening channels.
I love Kinney and AIC is one of my favourite bands ever. But honestly the drumming is not their strongest quality. Matt Cameron makes Kinney look like a kid learning the drums
He is on top of my list to, the fills that e mixes in the songs with AIC is plain genius. As for matt cameron, he is awesome, but not underrated
most underrated: Nyango Starr
nope. that guy is a god. god can't be underrated
@@ojuliaum a lot of people dont know him, that makes him underrated
Great list!
And I think you should consider Ronnie Vannucci Jr., The Killers' drummer. The man is an amazing musician, every song has different drum line. The guy is really good and nobody seems to notice.
Victor Araújo dos Santos I noticed. Believe me Natalie has an amazing drum part
I agree with you. His work on Battle Born is a masterclass in taste and dynamics.
What about:
Abe Cunningham / Deftones
Lol Tolhurst / The Cure
Danny Carey / Tool
Gabe Serbian / The Locust, Cattle Decapitation
Philip Selway / Radiohead
Richard Christy / Death
Navene Koperweis / Animals as leaders
Charlie Benante / Anthrax
Igor Cavalera / Sepultura
Jimmy Chamberlin / The Smasing Pumpkins
Francis Mark / From Autumn to Ashes.
You´re welcome.
Beto Castaldez Danny Carey isn't overrated but I agree, Abe Cunningham deserves more credit than he gets. He would top my list for most underrated
Don't agree 100% but way better list for sure.
I think you should add Bill Ward from Black Sabbath to that list. I was so mad when I realised he wasn't on this list, then again, it's watchmojo. They don't exactly produce the best content on TH-cam.
Beto Castaldez never heard of Buddy Rich? Gene Krupa?
Danny Carey isn't really underrated as many people think he's one of the best drummers of all time and rightly so
I'm glad you added the foo fighter drummer. He was an awesome drummer. RIP Taylor
Maybe because his band is now known as that band that did "Africa" and nothing else, I feel like Jeff Porcaro (Toto) is pretty underrated. He's pretty respected by the music community (has earned much respect for the shuffle section of "Rosanna") and has worked with acts like Boz Scaggs and Michael Jackson, but has been largely been pushed aside due to his early death. He deserves some recognition.
ringo star is actually the most underrated drummer because plebs who cant discern good drumming from bad unfairly brush him off for having an understated playing style and for being "the least talented" in a band comprising of john lennon, paul mccartney and george harrison. the fact of the matter is he has an incredible sense of rhythm that is complementary and full of personality. he shouldn't have made it look so easy.
I wholeheartedly agree with your thesis, wz.
To quote Quincy Jones: the Beatles were the worst musicians I’ve ever seen.
Jack Francis Agreed....:the Beatles are THE most overrated and over analyzed band in music history.
wowee zowee sorry ringo was asked to do very little and he didn't even play on many of the beatles later tunes. Very simple drumming mr expert
RIngo made this WM list as "ten best" which is a fucking joke but should make you feel better.
what about Jose Pasillas from incubus. absolutely amazing
Mick Tucker from THE SWEET, best drummer in his time, amazing. SOOOOOO under rated, so good, gone too early......R.I.P.
As we're a lot of drummers that others have mentioned. Also on that list...although he is highly rated is John Bonham (sp). And the drummer from Def Leppard... sorry Senior Moment his name escapes me...maybe Rick Allen (?)...after losing an arm, he helped pioneer electronic drumms. Of course he isn't underrated, but he should have an award for the drummer with the most heart!!!
Marty Cunningham one of my favourite drummers of all time is Mick Tucker. Sweet has got to be one of them all time greats.
Agree 100 percent. Mick was awesome and has never gotten the recognition he deserves. The live at Musikladen videos from November 74 really show what a drumming beast he was. It wasn't just technical skills but also great timekeeping, cool fills, effortless triplets, quadlets, rolls, and tons of personality. Gone but never forgotten. RIP Mick Tucker.
Matt Helders?
Now that's an underrated drummer...he is fucking brilliant!
I was looking for this comment for years, finally someone knows him
John dolmayan from soad is hands down the most underrated drummer
Joseph P thank you!
Joseph P that’s what I’ve been trying to say. Daron and Shavo play the most simple shit, Johns complex drumming is the backbone for the band
Came to the comments to write this!
Watch the video of them playing live in Romania, amazing, that guy is a workhorse, one of the better drummers to come along in a while.
EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING
No Zach Hill? Disappointed.
True shit
Mark Wright a great drummer is a very subjective statement; youre a great drummer based on how well you fit your style of music and maximing the cohesiveness with your fellow bandmates. Id say Smith has that in spades with Death Grips
Thanks for this, now I don't have to waste 11 minutes.
Zach Hill is my favourite rock drummer. I'm so glad he plays rock. I love when Zach plays rock songs.
I wouldn't call zach underrated, he is super respected for an underground artist.
You have to think that Taylor Hawkin’s front man Dave Grohl is one of the best rock drummers alive, the fact that he is still able to play to Dave’s standards with such charisma just deserves so much respect.
What? Grohl is a mediocre drummer, at the very best.
@@revyu6754 behave will you

Topper is a jazz drummer who moved to Rock. Also wrote and recorded Rock the Casbah and played drums bass and piano on it.
One take wonder during SF Sandy Pearlman sessions for GEER.

1.Bill Bruford - Yes, King fuckin' Crimson
2.Phil Collins - Genesis ( yes, helluva' underrated drummer)
3.Bill Ward - Black Sabbath
4.Ian Paice - Deep Purple

(Honorable mentions : Mick Fleetwood, Matt Cameron, Vinnie Colaiuta, Micheal Giles, Mitch Mitchell )
EDIT : Can't believe I missed Steve Smith - Journey, and hundreds of other instrumental proGect
A much better list than Watchmojo's. I would also add Phil Selway of Radiohead into the Honorable mentions as well as indie drummers Chris Bear and Greg Saunier (Grizzly Bear and Deerhoof, respectively).
Andy Gray since when is Ian Paice underrated?
Flo Ryan Do you see him being mentioned in any type of Watchmojo list ?? Or any other magazines/sites ?? He deserves WAY more recognition. He is on par with Bonham and together paved way for Heavy metal drumming ! But still is overshadowed by other 70s famous drummers. If that's not underrated , then i don't know what is .....
Andy Gray I would say he's even more famous than Bonham. Maybe he's not that often in magazines or in any Watchmojo video lol but who cares. He's very popular anyways and not underrated at all.
Andy Gray he's one of the drummers people even know if they aren't into drums or don't play drums themselves. A Scott Philipps for example is a fuckin beast and just people who are into this certain band called Alter Bridge know him. He deserves way more attention. HE is so much underrated.
I was waiting for Matt Cameron.
Teague Anderson Yep Jimmy Chamberlin also for me.
Yes!!
@@Monsterdrumma The smash pumpkin drummer, yes! Also JON LEE! The original Feeder's drummer! 💜

Went to Algiers yesterday. Top band, top drummer. Great discovery thanks to this video
but the number 1 under rated drummer is Danny Carey from Tool.
This guy is a god also Ray Luizier is outstanding and maybe not very known...
Dan Maynard how is he underrated? everyone knows him
Yeah, he's rated pretty highly (it doesn't get any higher than #1), but he could never be overrated.
Dan Maynard Within the drumming community he is not underrated at all.
Danny is the GOAT
Saw Foo Fighters live last night and Taylor did an incredible drum solo that showed how much talent he has. It was unbelievable.
I don’t think Taylor Hawkins is underrated at all, thank God! He’s very well recognized. RIP legend.
Abe Cunningham should be in top 3. Much like most on this list, he's not flashy and selfish, but plays what fits the song, and does it perfectly
Jimmy Chamberlain - The Smashing Pumpkins
John Fishman - Phish
Danny Carey - Tool
Carter Beuford - Dave Matthews Band
There’s just too damn many
Snagman67 dmb! Love carter
I don't think Carey is underrated at all. Everyone knows hes one of the best drummers of all time.
Gavin Harrison - Porcupine Tree, King Crimson
Hector Martinez yes ! gavin is a very good drummer !
Agreed. The current drum king.
But he is closely followed (or even fighting for the chair!) with Marco Minnenan
There's no fight here. They're so different. Marco's got charisma, speed, diversity, energy, lust for DRUMS. Gavin's cool, in the pocket, tasteful, dynamic, serves the MUSIC. Type A and type B drumming personalities. Yin/Yang. Body/Brain.
I don't think of him as underrated. Just not as famous.
Absolutely agree with #1. Terry Bozzio is one of the best ever.
Jeff Porcaro from Toto is one of the most recorded session musicians in history, working on hundreds of albums from famous artists. Because he was the best.
Good call on Headon and Bozzio. In terms of rock drumming (which this list clearly is) I'd also add in Josh Freese, Brian Downey, Roger Taylor (Queen), Alan Myers Mario Rubalcaba, remove HAWKINS + SMITH. In fact, i'd argue Smith is overrated.
Upvote for Alan Myers and Josh Freese. Alan Myers, esp underrated.
I LOVE BRYAN DOWNEY !!! He should had been here!!! I AGREE!Also JON LEE ,feeder's drummer! And the smash pumpkin guy!💜
I’m glad Dom Howard makes this list.
Haven't seen any mention of Barrett Martin, so I will post it here. Guy was among the giants of drummers of his era (Cameron, Chamberlain, Grohl, etc.), and was in some of my favorite bands of the 90s. Skin Yard, Screaming Trees, Mad Season, and his loads of collaborations and solo projects. Truly a virtuoso. His work with the 'Trees is what really drove it home for me, just listen to the Sweet Oblivion record. Highly underrated drummer in a very overlooked band.
(I'll add that Mark Pickerel is also a great drummer/ musician)
That wasn’t topper headen in the rock the casbah video , ironically he wrote the song , but was sacked due to his heroin addiction when they filmed the video
He also didn't play on White Riot but don't bother Mojo with facts.
Bhaastsd didn’t play on the first album
How about Sean Kinney!?
Kristina Miskovic agree! My granddaughter was born on Sean's birthday.
and dave aburzzsse
What a brutal list!!! Terry Bozzio is among the best ever.....period. Maybe he's underappreciated but not underrated.
I believe Danny Seraphine (Chicago) would be considered underrated. JMHO
I agree... Seraphine is STILL awesome
Are you telling me that John Dolmayan from System Of A Down wasn't even an honorable mention?
Imma say Roger Taylor bc watchmojo never mentions him🤦♂️
I agree, the only person I’ve ever heard give Roger his due is Taylor Hawkins, he’s his favorite!
Jon Wysocki from Staind, Scott Phillips from Creed & Alter Bridge, David Silveria from Korn, and Jimmy Chamberlin from Smashing Pumpkins should've at least been honorable mentions
Someone explain to me how Taylor Hawkins is underrated when he's one of the most well known drummers out there today.
You can be well known, but still underrated. Most people wouldn't add Taylor in the top 10 greatest drummers still alive list. He's one of the most naturally talented drummers I've seen.
He is at least at Grohl's level but people would class dave light years ahead of taylor just because of who he is.
Look at the drum tracks he write and his solos and compare them to dave's stuff... so he is considered good but is still underrated.
Cheshire CAT Scan Pfft Grohls average compared to Thomas lang.
lang is not really a rock drummer
Cheshire CAT Scan Lang is an everything drummer. Seriously have you seen the guy play???
He gives new meaning to the term 'one man band'
My underrated drummers (in no particular order)
Eric Kretz (Stone Temple Pilots)
Fabrizio Moretti (The Strokes)
Brad Wilk (RATM, Audioslave)
Matt Cameron (Soundgarden, Pearl Jam)
Jon Theodore (Mars Volta, QOTSA)
Joey Castillo (QOTSA)
Philip Selway (Radiohead)
Larry Mullen Jr. (U2)
Jon Joseph Waronker (Beck)
Alan White (Oasis)
Mark Pickerel (Screaming Trees)
Chad Smith (RCHP)
Matt Helders (Arctic Monkeys)
Ryan Dusek (Maroon 5’s Songs About Jane)
And more but I can’t think at the moment.
How can Matt Helders not even be in the honorable mentions?
Stephen perkins??? Jane s addiction
ohh man good call!
one of my favourite drummers... love his unique style
Great addition! Just a funky and unique drummer, his groove is amazing!
Phil Selway from Radiohead? Brad Wilk from RAtM?? Don Henley from Eagles maybe??
charlie172011 Phil is criminally underrated, his beats are always so creative and interesting! One of my absolute faves
Brad Wilk is underrated ... And old mate from Incubus
If you'd stop listing shitty bands then MAYBE your comment would have some merit.
Are you an old mate of his, from Incubus?
I'm just happy that Dom Howard made it to this list since he's always forgotten about
And I will always have a soft spot for Taylor Hawkins
Who the hell put these together? I can think of a lot of drummers that are underrated that blow these guys away.
Too many to list. One I will list is the drummer for Kansas.
I'm not a Kansas fanboy. I really like them, but once I saw them in concert I realized how good he is. Most of the guys on this list are good at best.
The Kansas drummer is named Phil Ehart, and yes, he is a bit underrated.
No Dominic Howard is ABSOLUTELY amazing and made this list
Ah, Chad Smith. love his ghost notes in Californication.... and Otherside.... and Scar Tissue... and Dani California.... you know what, all his songs
Edward Sims even in the new album .. The Getaway
Frank Beard from ZZ Top. Billy Gibbons is such a huge presence that Frank Beard does not get the credit he deserves.
"Wax Simulacra" was recorded by Thomas Pridgeon
Forgot to mention that Topper Headon was also a jazz drummer before the Clash and had to change his style, and also had a solo album after he was removed
Danny Carey should definitely be on this list. Also, Barriemore Barlow from Jethro Tull. A true master behind the kit.
Two awesome catches, Kronis. Agreed.
But Danny Carey isn't underrated, he's one of the most celebrated drummers ever. This list is "most underrated"
Danny is recognized as one of the best drummers of all time and is far from being underrated.Barriemore is underrated tho
No love for Bill Bruford.
The Lax or Steve Smith. (or any actually good drummer)
He was ahead of his time awesome.
Carl palmer
Steve Gadd
HE ISN'T UNDERRATED!!!!!!
Just a detail: I won on French radio in 1997 a trip to Dublin to see u2 in studio for pop album. So, there is a big difference between playing on stage the official tracks and play in studio like you want. And i saw Larry Mullen jr doing some incredible things with his drum, and the speed was x10 than album tracks! So if you put this guy for a demo on stage, people will be surprised about his level and speed! Same speed like hard rock drummer. But for u2 songs he plays only the main and minimum drum part. Style of u2 music, simple but very efficient. For me one of greatest drummer of history. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Couldn’t agree more
If we’re talking about a drummer held in universally very high regard by drummers yet considered a hack and weak link by most of the general public, there can be no more underrated drummer than Ringo Starr.
