I often think of my dad hearing this. He had his demons and unfortunately it took his life. At his funeral, nobody had anything to say, not even the preacher. His family judged him and shut him out, and even when he passed they had the nerve to judge him. Yet they never understood, nor did they know him. Not like me and my family did. He was a good man, despite what they’d say. He struggled all his life, I hope you got your wings dad. Rest now and fly free.
We'll never the true nature until we get to the other side and see the world as it is and not how we perceive it. Love this song. Best song, in my opinion, ever to hit the subject.
I just heard "what a shame "today I just broke down . I lost my brother Rocky a few years ago to brain cancer and this song is for him. Rocky was way to young to be gone from us. Thank you Shinedown
I'm sorry for your loss. I had my grandpa die just a while back, it was the hardest thing ever. My sister died, but god was able to her back, and we all have to be thankful, even if we lost someone close. Sure, you're allowed to cry, it hurt me so much to hear that he died. I was heartbroken, but, I know in the end we will be happy if we choose joy. So think happy thoughts, my friend.😊
"What a shame, to have to beg you to see, we're not all the same" Powerful lyrics. This song is almost 11 years old, but still speaks the truth about the world today, and I fear it always will. It doesn't matter your race, religion, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, or anything, we're all human, and it's time for everyone to be accepted for who they are, no matter what anyone say
I will say this until the day I die; Shinedown. Is. AMAZING. And if you have a chance to see them in concert, do it! They are just fantastic. I've never seen a band truly appreciate their fans like Shinedown does. I even got to meet them after the concert, talk to them and such, they are so nice. They wanted to shake my hand and have a little chat before signing anything. A Shinedown concert is one that you won't forget, that's for sure!
April 8th 2019, my ex husband died from cirrhosis of the liver...drinking himself to death. We had 5 sons, and he had 2 other sons from a previous marriage. It was not a bed of roses...lots of abuse through the years. But as time was coming to an end for him...we all forgave him, and we were all there to help him through his journey. One of our sons, posted this song, shortly after he passed, and I can't think of a more perfect song to fit the passing of his Dad. Thank you so much for making this song. It will be played 5 days from now, which will mark 1 yr. that he's been gone, and I hope he has his wings.
This song really grabs my emotions by the heart strings. Shinedown is one of the most amazing bands that engulf your soul and won't let go...profound. Great song. They are very much one of the best bands in the world. And here's a kicker, you can listen with your kids and not have to explain filth. Shinedown please keep on shining your amazing light.
They played this live in Madison, Wi last night and it was an acoustic version. We got a intimate and personal experience with them. Check it out if you got the chance
Anyone here still listening in 2019? I binge on Shinedown daily. Helps me through lifes challenges. But this song never got the recognition it so deserved
Know there's at least one person out here praying for you. I'm Christian, and I truly believe in it. You most certainly don't have to care, but I know God loves you. He understands your pain - sent His son to die for it. You have support from out here in the internet.
This song speaks on so many levels, from addictions to homelessness to people who need to just go to God who are at the end of their lives,Won't you give them their wings.
This song reminded me of something. It helped me remember the missing part I've been looking for. Tolerance and patience. Acceptance. In a world full of people who spend every waking moment judging others, sometimes it's hard to remember how to not be like that too. I went so long knowing I've changed, but never really sure how or why. I'm going to try harder from now on to hold my ground and not be swayed by the judgements and opinions of those around me. I like myself more when I accept others at face value. I hate it when I'm forced to judge and push them away.
Just know that is the greatest lesson you could ever learn. The sooner the better, only God can judge others. It is not are place to judge them. I just always true and help those who need it most and leave the rest to God. It makes my heart smile to even read your desire to change your hearts way of thinking. God bless you every day and know that you're heart will not lie to you and I am praying for you and the decision you are making.
I wasn't involved, unfortunately, in getting to choose the music played at my dad's funeral last year, but I listened to this song before and afterwards. Of all Shinedown's songs I ever played for him while he was alive, this is the ONLY one he ever said he really liked. It fit him so well, and I miss him so much. 😥
Even scientifically, this is true. Baryon Asymmetry is a phenomenon that proves this. In the early universe, particles of antimatter and matter began to form. Instead of an equal amount of both, for every 10 billion antimatter particles, there was one extra matter particle. When the two meet, they annihilate, leaving radiation behind. Due to this asymmetry, matter came out victorious. Think of that, due to this flaw early in cosmology, Stars, Planets, Galaxies, Nebulae, and life were able to form.
That's true but that's also why if life is going well for you, don't blame life being shit for others on only their choices. We're lucky in everything circumstances are what let a few of us get ahead in a shit system.
My son took his life four days ago. I was so proud of him because despite his "successful" father's constant judgment and hurtful words, my son became a navy corpsman who saved lives, and after his tours, he started his own very successful business with no one's help. He became a pilot, married and had a beautiful daughter and son. It still wasn't enough. My boy is at peace now and no one can ever hurt or belittle him again. Never forget - words kill. Mom is still proud of you, my beautiful boy. I love you.
This song goes out to my good friend who shall remain nameless. He battled with an alcohol addiction for years. Great guy. Missed daily. I hope that angel got his wings.
I have said it from first hearing Shinedown many years ago, Brent Smith is one of, if not the best male vocalist in the industry. He's incredible in everything he does.
@@PlexsyMusic I'm so sorry coming back a whole year later! I couldn't think of the word at the time. I knew it wasn't a key change because all the instrumentals are still doing the same thing, just couldn't think of the word at the time. Sorry
A girl broke up with me about 4 years ago and this song always reminds me of the pain, not that she left me, that she got with someone else 2 weeks later, I listened to this constantly, when I was on the bus, train, when i was gaming, Even in the pub when I put it on, used to make me cry. Now I look back on those times with happiness when I hear this, because it gave me comfort, and now even though life is getting in the way of being easy, this makes me smile. It gets easier. The words are just amazing. You can tell Brent watched this all go down with his Uncle. To put it in words as good as this is just great song writing. This song should be played in detox places.
No song has spoke out more to me than this one. This song is number one in my overall songs. It's in my favorites, i've bought this album, and I've listened to this over probably a hundred times... it's just, BEAUTIFUL!
Gosh, never ceases to amaze me how talented of a vocalist Brent is. This song has always been one of my favorites for some reason, and I’m not entirely sure why. I’ve never personally struggled with depression or suicidal thoughts. But this song has just always been a favorite of mine. I love their new stuff, don’t get me wrong, Special is my personal favorite from Attention Attention but I really do miss the pre-amaryllis Shinedown. I mean Amaryllis, Threat to Survival, and Attention Attention have all been super awesome records for sure. But Leave a Whisper-Sound of Madness were just completely awesome and will always be some of my favorite albums by any band ever.
my brother committed suicide and this song breaks me down I've always loved shindown I've seen them live 3 times but they hit me so much harder now most of there old songs can tear me down now I miss you PJ R.I.P brother
Played this song at my uncles funeral, had this song existed previously, would have been at my dads as well, what a song, so much raw, real emotions true words spoken, why wait to realize we're not all the same
I feel this song that explains me down to my core, no one will understand who i am till they hear this song. There will never be another song on this planet like this one nor will there ever be another band like shinedown!
I just don't see how they're can be any argument for the best rock band in the world right now. when it's all said and done, Shinedown will go down as one of the need rock bands of all time and brent smith will be considered one of the best rock vocalists of all time
@Christopher Bingham well u know Ben had alcohol abuse to his throat,on CD in my opinion Ben sounds better than Brent, But then again I haven't seen either one live so.....
Every time I hear this I think of my friends dad who just passed away last March. It hurts, seeing someone you care about loose so much. My last talk with her father, I'll never forget. God, I hope you gave that man his wings.
Sorry for the loss of your brother, mine was took 5 yrs ago & same this song is my brother to a T eventho every time I hear it, it breaks my heart a little, i have no doubt John finally got his wings, so it also brings me joy, for this reason it’s my favorite & they got so many great ones. Love Shinedown & for as long as I live I’ll keep talkin about you, thinkin about you, loving you, sayin your name keepin your memory alive till Im gone 💙 JTS 1979 -2017
I think of my uncle when I hear this he had demons and smoke and drank heavily. He loved the world, life and people about always got treated like crap and it ultimately took his life. The full of sympathy for a world thay wouldn't let him be part really resonated with me. I watched him self destruct from a toddler. People judged him and he knew that and it hurt more because he just wanted help.
The only part that is the ABSOLUTE truth in this song is.... "If there was nothing wrong, then there'd be nothing right".... I guess we need to see the world more like a circle and less like a square.
I just found shinedown yesterday and honesty fell in love with this band they don't have a bad song I am 16 and I've always listens to rap and hip hop but I'm trying to extend my musical preference and I love this band they have become my favorite band and they will never get old 🤘
My favorite Shinedown's song... that song is incredible, the instrumental part, and the lyric part, being this last one the better one... "That's the man he was, have you heard enough?" is like the best combination of words I have ever seen. That song talks about poverty, talks about how can a man be afraid of be something or not to be it, and talks about the past, and the future. That song also talks about how the world sees you, and... this song talks tells that you have to comprehend yourself, and all the people in the world. "What a shame, 'cause we're not all the same" A lot of people feel like they're alone in the world, they ideas are extravagant and uniques and they also ask to themselves "How can't they be like me?!" and I'm one of these kind of people, but... I understood that: you just have to be yourself, it doesn't matter if people isn't mature enough, or they can't understand you and your ideas. You can't think about what differences the world with you, you have to be strong and think about what makes you the same as the other seven thousand million people in the world. That songs talks about all this things, that's why that's my favorite one. PS: Sorry about my english, I know it's not too good, but I tried my best. xDD
Sound of Madness was, is, and will always be one of the best hard rock albums of the 2000's. Brent Smith has an equally amazing voice and range. Though I don't know him, I'm proud to know he's in my age range. Talent well worth the recognition he gets.
I lost my lil brother 4 years ago at this exact time. Every year at 2:37 on 12/31 I listen to this in memory of him. Though he had addiction problems he was a great guy who is defined perfectly by this song.
I found this song right when I had recently found out a close family friend had committed suicide, he had a major drinking problem and it costed him everything from jobs to girlfriends until the point he felt that he needed to end it all. He was a great man even with his known problems he was the type who would go out of his way to help you with whatever he can at any given moment, he was actually the only person who stepped forward without complaint to help my family move out of a house we lived in 20 plus years when we had no help from anybody... He worked his ass off and still had trouble getting by. (Some was self induced but still).. In the end it was such a waste of a life. I hope he has his wings now and found the peace he wanted. R.i.p Rob you will be missed.
This song makes me quiver all over, just love this. His voice is unbelievable and awesome. My favorite song of his, along with Burning Bright. Can't get enough of his voice and songs.
The best songs are the ones I can relate to, word for word. So that makes this an amazing song. Songs like this are one of the reasons I love Shinedown so much.
As an ex-addict, this song pulls me in. It's telling us that we have no right to judge how people cope with the world, and although there are asshole addicts, there are also ones that want to be free, but whose addiction holds them like a prison. This song says that not all addicts are alike and we're PEOPLE man. We're not skeletons with needles in our arms. We have parents. We got report cards and we made crafts in kindergarten. We cried over weight gain in middle school and over boys in high school. We weren't born with a candle and a spoon. We earned them. We have souls and there's more to a druggie than meets the eye. Some of us love the world and everyone in it. Some of us know love better than anyone else.
Well said hun..well done for getting of the drugs. Im on my own nobody to support me how did u do it if u don't mind me asking?? Take care hope to hear from u soon. Thnx and godbless xx
Rehab and detox, but the best thing to do is remember why you're doing it and keep reminding yourself of the feeling of waking up and not needing whatever it is. It's an incredible feeling to wake up and say "I want it, but don't need it. I can live on my own without the drugs, I can spend my time, money and energy on good." The physical part of getting away is hard enough, but if you don't have faith in yourself, then it can't happen. I really hope that you're able to break the chains. It was the hardest thing I've ever had to do, and it will be hard for you too, but you just have to keep going and not let the struggle push you back. Remember that relapse is okay. You're recovering. Just try to stay strong.
Thank you! These are excellent and I use them every day, especially in my running. sherrie Duckworth I have recently become a vegan and exercising and the feeling of having to work for you food, and being able to produce something for yourself is the best feeling in the world. Let yourself get flour everywhere and fuck up recipes. There is nothing more satisfying than finding out "oh this sauce from my prevegan life has meat in it. Oh well. to the local Food Pantry it goes." and then going outside to your very own garden and picking the tomatoes, garlic, onions, basil and cilantro to make your own. It's incredible to be able to take care of yourself and wake up loving everything you are. I'd suggest exercising, doing yoga, becoming a vegan or converting to a religion that you believe in. I'm a Buddhist, and that and becoming a vegan are the two best ways that I've gotten away from the drugs. It's good to feel clean in every sense of the word.
I realise that this isn't directly related to your comment, but I am going to ask anyway. Do you have any advice for someone who is attempting to stop cutting (self cutting)? I wouldn't ask but I really want to stop and I just can't. Sorry for bothering you.
Wow this song reminds me of someone that I know who just recently passed away on my birthday. Love you Jason W. May you rest in peace now. Its a shame you had to leave to soon.
Thanks man, he was just one hell of a person. He made me see the world a different way, although he was always criticized for his looks and how he was. He was an amazing person inside and out.
Omg I love all these types of songs with meaning that anybody can relate to. These artists are just the storytellers and narrators for these song stories. Love music. 🙏🏼 🙏🏼
This song has become my church/spiritual anthem just by the line: "to judge a life that you can't change". This line had a VERY profound effect on how I view people and judging before I have a chance, through the Grace and love of Jesus, to have a positive influence or impact in their lives. Also, me and the singer share the same first and last name too...haha
Yeah know I've had my ups and down. Been to hell and back a few times. But this is one of the bands that the music just connects to you. All I can say is thank you to them for getting it. A song that can connect and mean something can save someone no matter how dark there life looks at that moment. I truly thank them for that. The lyrics clicked with me. I may have to struggle everyday but I know there is a chance for an up side to life and to just see it through
I dedicate this song to my dad. I know I never met you. No one should judge you for leaving. Were not the same. I wish one day when god gives you wings you fly to me and tell me it's going to be ok. That's all I need. A ok from you
it will help a little but the world is always gunna be a fucked up place because theirs always gunna be people who are either happy and don't care or depressed and wanting to kill themselves that's human nature for you
This is such an amazing and sad song. So many people want to judge others. None of us should pass judgement on anyone. We don’t live. In their shoes. We all have our problems. Don’t judge be not knowing what I’ve gone through and continue to go through.
“There’s a touch of grey for every shade of blue” is written on my left forearm surrounded by polynesian tribal. Also o spited by this song I have an angel crying with her wings behind her. This song is by far one my all time favorite songs period. I wish I could hear this live! Also this song has a lot of heartfelt lyrics to live by :)
This video probably has as many likes as it does because I freaking play this song like 5 times a day... I never get tired of it. His vocals are radikalous

In addition to the song, your comment touched my heart too .
God bless your dad
I'll pray for him to get to heaven...
I love this song but I came here looking for a story like this. I am really struggling with myself right now and this helps. Thanks Jason.
We'll never the true nature until we get to the other side and see the world as it is and not how we perceive it. Love this song. Best song, in my opinion, ever to hit the subject.

This song is criminally underrated. Easily in the top 3 best songs they've ever made.
This is my favorite from them!! Honestly the whole Sound of Madness album is incredible! I love all Shinedown but this one is just legendary
The whole album is fucking amazing. I like the deluxe edition cause the regular doesn't play long enough in my car.
Absolutely 💯❗
I've heard it since its been published and still listen to it. Damn good song for those with open eyes.

After a friend introduced me to Shinedown, well fell in love with what they are about... Stories they tell are amazing, never a dull moment
one of the best Song by Shinedown..greatest voice ever!!
This is the first song I heard from Shinedown, and it's still my favorite.
Same here
"What a shame, what a shame, too judge a life that you can't change" Just... Let me print this on a shirt please.
Wohkah The Witch I need that shirt too
The world needs that shirt.
I would buy it.
I.......just....
I need to go cry
Wohkah The Witch
Really needed to hear this song today. Stay strong guys, if someone like me can, I know you can too.
The Sound Of Madness was an amazing Cd and this song was by far my favorite off the album,
I just don't see how they're can be any argument for the best rock band in the world right now. when it's all said and done, Shinedown will go down as one of the need rock bands of all time and brent smith will be considered one of the best rock vocalists of all time
Ahm ahm, Breaking Benjamin and Benjamin Burnley
@Christopher Bingham well u know Ben had alcohol abuse to his throat,on CD in my opinion Ben sounds better than Brent,
But then again I haven't seen either one live so.....
Corey Taylor is way better
Something tells me they have so much more to come.......................
I don't understand why this was never released as a single! Absolutely one of the best ever, just listen to the lyrics!
Every time I hear this I think of my friends dad who just passed away last March. It hurts, seeing someone you care about loose so much. My last talk with her father, I'll never forget. God, I hope you gave that man his wings.
My brother just died Saturday, this was so him. Here it is 3 days later and I still can't stop crying.....
Yep... one of the deepest cuts of this song, and definitely a topic of the most sincere philosophical conversations.
+Nate Thomas those conversations I enjoy, would like to meet a woman who enjoys as well
+Nate Thomas true that, definitly food for thought
+Rohan David This whole song is the ABSOLUTE TRUTH!
Yeah
What a voice!!! Intense words..Blessings and Peace to all!!!!
Shinedown is amazing! Beautiful lyrics, the music is both epic and relaxing.
One of my favorite bands for sure!
I lost a good friend today. This song reminds me him so much.
Such a great song.
I just found shinedown yesterday and honesty fell in love with this band they don't have a bad song I am 16 and I've always listens to rap and hip hop but I'm trying to extend my musical preference and I love this band they have become my favorite band and they will never get old 🤘
Check out theory of a dead man if you wanna expand your taste
PS: Sorry about my english, I know it's not too good, but I tried my best. xDD
I agree
I couldn't have worded this better myself. Thank you my friend for these words of wisdom
3:18 ....holy crap.....
+MrBallaBoy21 Right? That key change into the final chorus; just fucking epic. Chills. Every. Time.
+Brandon Galvin I fucking passed out trying to do that.... Gotta cut down to 2 packs of cigarettes a day !!!
That's always the bit that makes me cry...
My favorite part
Damn, you are so right.
Sound of Madness was, is, and will always be one of the best hard rock albums of the 2000's. Brent Smith has an equally amazing voice and range. Though I don't know him, I'm proud to know he's in my age range. Talent well worth the recognition he gets.
Everytime I write a tragic character in a book this is one of the songs I listen to
I lost my lil brother 4 years ago at this exact time.
Sorry to here at least we can move forward in share emotions sorry 4 loss
This song makes me quiver all over, just love this. His voice is unbelievable and awesome. My favorite song of his, along with Burning Bright. Can't get enough of his voice and songs.
One of my very favorite songs🎧🎤🎵
my grandma died from cancer of the lungs 3 months ago . so many loved her and she loved so many R.I.P. GRANDMA
2019 and still listening on repeat.
Loved it, over and over I listen to this, the whole album is the best ever.
Who is still listening to this great song in 2023??
U took the words right out of my mouth, snowghost
Well said hun..well done for getting of the drugs. Im on my own nobody to support me how did u do it if u don't mind me asking?? Take care hope to hear from u soon. Thnx and godbless xx
Rehab and detox, but the best thing to do is remember why you're doing it and keep reminding yourself of the feeling of waking up and not needing whatever it is. It's an incredible feeling to wake up and say "I want it, but don't need it. I can live on my own without the drugs, I can spend my time, money and energy on good."
The physical part of getting away is hard enough, but if you don't have faith in yourself, then it can't happen.
I will only say one thing about this song-it is well written, well peformed and simply beautiful
one of the best songs. it hive me chills its so good just the wording uggh no other songs really does this. its from the heart.
This song reminds me of my childhood best friend in the army who survived a suicide attempt. I love you bro, I'm glad you got another chance at life
Wow this song reminds me of someone that I know who just recently passed away on my birthday. Love you Jason W. May you rest in peace now. Its a shame you had to leave to soon.
I'm sorry for your loss. it's never easy having a close one pass way too early. hope you are doing okay man
Thanks man, he was just one hell of a person. He made me see the world a different way, although he was always criticized for his looks and how he was. He was an amazing person inside and out.
I hate how the good always seem to die young. Hope you're ok now. Poor guy.
I'm okay now thank you man, means a lot.
I love this song. Partly because the rhythm and melody but also because of its meaning.
It's my favourite Shinedown song... It's beautiful.
"That's the way that I see Life if there was nothing wrong then there'd be nothing right" AMEN
My favorite Shinedown song, it tells a powerful story and is brilliantly performed
That's for sure!
What a shame what a shame to judge the life that you can’t change!😭💜
Omg I love all these types of songs with meaning that anybody can relate to. These artists are just the storytellers and narrators for these song stories. Love music. 🙏🏼 🙏🏼
10/10 just amazing
nice pic :) \A7X/
A7X forever
I am very proud of him. And I have learned a lot of very valuable lessons from my brother on being a better person, being strong, and having faith.
I want this played at my funeral!!
The lyrics man. The fucking lyrics. Fucking genius Brent is!
Snehartho Dey he is isbt he. Then the vocals
This song...Honestly, it brings tears to my eyes. So powerful.
I miss my husband so much. He passed away 2 months ago from a drug overdose. I love him always.
May he fly high.
@@jessicaburr1240 thank you.
He misses you too Amanda
This song has become my church/spiritual anthem just by the line: "to judge a life that you can't change". This line had a VERY profound effect on how I view people and judging before I have a chance, through the Grace and love of Jesus, to have a positive influence or impact in their lives. Also, me and the singer share the same first and last name too...haha
"two packs of cigarettes a day, the strongest whiskey Kentucky can make" we all remember those days
CLuv
yes
Years 😞
Yeah know I've had my ups and down. Been to hell and back a few times. But this is one of the bands that the music just connects to you. All I can say is thank you to them for getting it. A song that can connect and mean something can save someone no matter how dark there life looks at that moment. I truly thank them for that. The lyrics clicked with me. I may have to struggle everyday but I know there is a chance for an up side to life and to just see it through
this song touched me the first time i heard it. wow 0.o
There are groups for that. I'm so sorry. But remember, you're not a victim - you're a hero!
Same
Shinedown is a Great Band and this song is very moving!
I dedicate this song to my dad. I know I never met you. No one should judge you for leaving. Were not the same. I wish one day when god gives you wings you fly to me and tell me it's going to be ok. That's all I need. A ok from you
Same here with me; you said it well...
Yes I agree also.
sorry for your loss. I hope he finds his way to you and you find nothing but happiness in life.
Nice comment!
Sounds like your dad a real deadbeat
great lyrics, we lack appreciation for this kind of music these days, love shinedown since 'leave a whisper'' to 'threat to survival'
"What a shame to have to beg you to see we're not all the same"
I had this played at my Uncles Funeral ❤
this song is so deep...if we"d all understand it this world will become a paradise
No doubt!!
Brian Scott mm
it will help a little but the world is always gunna be a fucked up place because theirs always gunna be people who are either happy and don't care or depressed and wanting to kill themselves that's human nature for you
Their most Powerful Song ! Wish Smith would still write songs like this one ......
Damn, this song tells my life story so well.....
This is such an amazing and sad song. So many people want to judge others. None of us should pass judgement on anyone. We don’t live. In their shoes. We all have our problems. Don’t judge be not knowing what I’ve gone through and continue to go through.
This song needs to be heard in every AA or NA meeting out there..
wxsn and save me
Simple a awesome band
i'M NOT SURE ABOUT THAT..
@@ladonnaday9566 they are very judgmental. I went for 4 years. I quit. And I'm still clean
One of the best if not the best vocalist of my generation!!
I always try to swipe the hair away that is just part of the album cover
Its just pink hair guys
“There’s a touch of grey for every shade of blue” is written on my left forearm surrounded by polynesian tribal. Also o spited by this song I have an angel crying with her wings behind her. This song is by far one my all time favorite songs period. I wish I could hear this live! Also this song has a lot of heartfelt lyrics to live by :)
Me and my band HAVE to do a cover of this song.
