Iirc i think i suggested him to look at Pirate Party on comment for his 1st long video about this topic. Not sure if he even read the comment since there were thousands and even if he did he might had forgotten it but i am happy for this attempt to reach them now.
This is so crazy. When we're all started Dead game news I thought to myself that I had never heard someone so eloquently describe an issue of such complexity. I still listen to his more popular Dead game news videos with no real care about the subject matter, rather just a deep appreciation for his precision clarity and easily accessible explanations and examples. Who'd have thought he would end up having come this far. Way to go Ross, may you never have to eat beans again.
Really really good video; this is so useful to explain this issue to new people in a nutshell. Really like that you addressed the common misconceptions.
This explains the whole problem very well. I will now be posting this every time the subject of killing games comes up in conversations. I could not possibly sum it up better myself. Keep doing what you do, Ross. 💪
I think you can add that Redfall game to the list of games where support was discontinued but was modified to continue working without connection to the publisher.
@@IsaacfessNot that it's much of a victory, considering that it's the game that killed one of the most interesting devs in the industry. I almost wish it hadn't been saved lol.
Very succintly put! I know Ross said he didn't want to be the spearhead of the organisation, but I really doubt many others would put in as much hustle as he has. It's immensely commendable, to say the least.
if a company can go far out of their way to engineer a dead-man's switch into their games, then they should be expected to remove it at the end of support.
well written, well articulated. i really hope it gains traction. however, ... "an assault on the concept of ownership" ... to the EU ... everyone of whom is in the pockets of the WEF -- i.e., "you'll own nothing, and be happy" it's a bold strategy, Cotton; let's hope it pays off.
You tell them Ross, we need clear laws on this matter, it is absurd how many games have died and are no longer playable because of these practices on products people PAID for.
I hope someone will mention that they could just force the company to announce EOLP from the moment of release and be done with it. That alone could cost some company millions in sales.
I am not betting high on the germans. They have built their economy around export and their automotive industriy would very much like to copy the US and Asian practices of selling a Car like a Service. So there will be a major pushback from the german car industry, and these are the guys who tell the politicans what to tell the public, effectively. Worth a try, though.
I found the full VOD to be very lackluster. Like they just learned about videogames yesterday and didn't quite get the full picture. It's also insanely dry, even by German standards.
The start has "My name is Walter Hartwell White. I live at 308 Negra Arroyo Lane Albuquerque New Mexico 87104. This is my confession." energy. But FR, keep fighting the good fight, Ross. 💪
I just have one suggestion: Polticians don't know games or the intricacies involved, so I think you need to explain better what an "end of service plan" actually consists of. An end of service plan simply means modifying the game to run on the local machine without needing to contact the publishers' servers. Most of these companies can make their games function without a central server with very minimal effort, often requiring less than a week of work on the part of their developers to simply remove the server requirements. And for games that simply have some always online DRM "phone home" checks, the DRM can be removed in a single day of dev work.
I want Ross to tell me that the world is about to be hit by an asteroid, in this exact manner.
An alien artifact. Finally things are starting to make sense.

Ah. Ross delivering a speech for a German symposium. Now things are beginning to make sense.
No cuts, No edits, One take. My dude's a legend.
I think this is a well written speech. It outlines the issue clearly and in a way that government officials will be able to relate to.
Very nice of Ross to translate the slides and text too!
Oh, the Pirate Party full video is also up now! I thought it was kinda funny how a discussion on game preservation was not preserved initially
you got a source for that?

I never heard a better summary of these issues.
Your arguments are starting to crystallize.
Here's hoping this speech doesn't fall onto deaf ears that the people it's presented to are able and willing to do something.
