Damn you make that Juno sound so nice. Glad you were able to find inspiration from my video! I love the approach to getting stuff used and showing what you actually paid.
Cheers, nice to see you in here! I'm picking up a mpc live 2 soon. I'll have to cruise some of your videos on using the modern mpc stuff for inspiration! 🙏
I appreciated you speaking about the practicality of something like the Space Echo, maybe I’m just a weirdo, but being pragmatic I feel keeps things grounded. Also, volca sample is my 2nd favorite volca.😀
🙏Cheers, I really appreciate you watching, big fan. I think of your sort of "eurorack didn't work out the way I expected" video as a great example of that; staying grounded, discussing the reality of these products beyond how cool they can seem.
@@JorbLovesGear yeah, your most asked question as you keep growing your channel (which is great since it’s a different perspective) will be this vs that…an impossible question without extensive context, but I’m glad you’re here to assist in answering those for the peeps who could use the advise☺️
Both of you are very helpful to us midlife synthesists, so to speak. What has made TH-cam great for the last decade is the simple sharing of information out amongst each other. By the time my DM 12 arrived in 2020, I had enough solid foundation for understanding how to dig into it, that I found what I wanted from it right away. A little more TH-cam helped me figure out what about the sequencer on the DM made it obnoxious to people. This time, next week, I will be sequencing my Subsequent 25 with the Digitone Keys, while running the Model: Cycles through the filter on the Moog. I didn't even have to go to Guitar Center and poke at Korgs and DFAMs for an afternoon to figure out what I needed. Explaining "what stuff does" for the less informed... It's a satisfying program. Thanks, yo.
I have a copicat varispeed ic400. Can confirm it's a bit of a PITA to keep clean and buy tapes and store tapes. Altho to be fair I don't care if it sounds dirty thats why I bought it!
Hey Jorb - love this. I love studio tours and it's super cool that you tell us how much you paid. I'm in the Uk and ask Alexa to do a $-£ conversion 😁 and I think you got a great deal on most of your stuff! I like looking at and hearing vintage gear but I'm not able to repair it so it's not something I would consider buying. If we wait long enough, Behringer will clone it all anyway 🤣
Never knew there was a mixer sending that many channels over USB! That's killer! If I told you a friend of mine just got an Odyssey and an Omni 2 for $100 on craigslist (for both) you probably wouldn't believe me. Needed repair but he just had them both done up. I am ver r r r y jealous. The AX-60 is super cool - just got my AX80 back from repair. Love the teeth of that Poly Six Sounds! Thanks for this in-depth share!
@@JorbLovesGear SAME! I got a clavinet d6 for free locally but I'm yet to repair it. Still waiting on vintage vibe to restock strings for it, not even sure if that's the issue either
Bought my JX-3P with the PG200 programmer new in 1983. Still have it. Works perfect. Couldn’t afford the Jupiter 8. The JX-3P had a sequencer while the Jupiter and Juno had the arpeggio.
Had a good laugh at your channel description. It comes across very differently over here in Australia hahahaha. Glad I clicked though, not what I was expecting but it was a great vid!
Just hearing you mention playing an Omnichord as a Bard in a D&D campaign made this entire video worth the watch. Wish I would have had players like you when I DM'd back in the day. Good stuff man.
man I've been doing what you're doing and it's basically allowed me to upgrade literally everything I have, these last 4 months alone I've literally found so much insane shit I can't get over it. I've been learning about vintage electronics and it's been so much fun, I picked up a juno 106 for 200 bucks earlier this year and have been waiting for my tax return so I can actually buy some voice chips for it. Heck in the last 3 months I also found a tascam 388 and also a oberheim DXa, the tascam was saved from the dump and was absolutely beat to shit but I love how it sounds. I'm in the process of getting some more potentiometers for the thing so I can fix one of the channel cards that's dead. I agree with you about fixing your own gear, it really is magical because it really feels like "yours" or whatever. Going to school has made this hobby kind of hard but I'm fortunate enough to have the space to work on stuff while living at home (even though you might think I paid a fuck ton for those I paid only 50 more than what you paid for your juno for those, im on that broke student life). Facebook marketplace and offerup have literally been killer for this, these deals do happen if you're there at the right time and go for it. I'm the same way though, I've basically traded up and sold whatever I don't like and basically haven't spent much of anything to do it. Anyway wanted to say hell yeah this shit does happen and that this video is good!
Sounds like some excellent finds. I'm really jealous of the DXa, I haven't had any luck with drum machines. Have wanted one for awhile! Maybe I should be using offer-up too, with luck like that. lol Cheers, thank you!
@@JorbLovesGear Definitely worth checking out, thank you though! I still can't believe it. I really like that you're honest and say what's up though! Really important and cool stuff, have a lovely day! Offerup can be hit or miss but it really all depends on where you live. I live in the Bay Area so it's easier to just find lots of shit. Anyway thank you I hope you find one! I cant wait to get some 909 eproms for it.
It’s sick that this long of a video held my attention but here we are. Also, I’m there with you, I’ve always preferred the Wurlitzer over the Rhodes. They just sound so… wait for it… WARM
Also, another follow up: I recently grabbed a Bass Station 2 and that thing rips. It’s just silly how awesome it sounds, how easy it is to use, for how cheap it is. Highly highly recommend it. (I know you were borrowing the BS2)
Thanks for the guided tour! My gear is currently all "living" in a PDF document I made, because I'm trying to move house and everything is packed up. It's kind of both nice and depressing to page through the document, looking at all the instruments. I can't wait to get a studio set up again! Quick tip about the OpSix - I recommend the in depth videos on the Oscillator Sink channel. That guy taught me so much I didn't know. It really is a very capable synth. I'd quite like to get the modwave as well, but they're out of stock everywhere at the moment...
Isn't that the worst, all the gear in boxes? lol He's a wonderful resource, I have enjoyed sitting and chatting in a few of his deepmind livestreams. Talented sound designer! FM feels like a calculus problem sometimes, i don't quite know enough for the way I like to experiment.
@@JorbLovesGear Thanks for the reply. I know what you mean about FM, it twists my brain too! I get the basics, but things like operator feedback baffle me. It seems very unclear how to know what that will actually sound like in advance...
@macronencer I know the feeling. I too have a list of my whole studio on pdf and all my equipment is in boxes between a storage and my apartment. I'm waiting to move at the end of the year into a house in Florida. Yet I still am buying while I still live in the northeast. One day soon we'll have our studios all set up. Lol.
Korg Volca Sample. Huh. Just bought one. It's not a sampler in two ways: it doesn't do note off, not even with third party firmware. So you can only do one-shots. And it does not record audio. For those who might wonder if there's a catch and that note off thing was something I could never have guessed.
I've a 54, and I still play all my gigs with it. But sure, its a pain in the ass to move ti each time. The sound worths it. You're so lucky to have bought it so cheap (even with repair)
Really cool video man! Would be interested in a gear repair video from you for sure. Maybe when you pickup something new that needs repaired walk us through the entire process: troubleshooting, cleaning, recapping etc.
I think I'll get something predictably broke with that in mind. I'd love to make it as general as possible, sort of doing all the steps I take no matter what, and see where that leads. I see repair content as being useful for someone looking to solve the same exact problem, worry a bit about it being valuable beyond that
That Yamaha reface is on my list these days. I dumped Moog and Apple around 2005, both for pretty much the same reasons (not going to invite hate by explaining that one lol). Great video, Bo brought me here.
Hey Jorb! If you haven't checked out the Korg Volca Drum, I think it is loads of fun. I like using it so much more than the Volca Sample. It does some unique things with the choke points and probability. With those 2 things used at the same time, it produces some interesting results for jam sessions and keeps things fresh. The way you create the drum sounds is similar to the DFAM, but with 6 instruments and 2 layers per instrument, you can do a whole lot more than the DFAM. Its got some useful effects and plenty of sonic possibilities to make FM drum sounds. P.S. I love all your videos and your playing. Thanks for doing them.
Great video! Some of these old samplers with short memory sound amazing when used like synthesizers, processing short waveforms. Alpha Junos are still quite undervalued, extremely versatile and tons of fun when combined with a controller imo.
I love your channel, just stumbled upon it, I’m in HS so Im always on Craigslist for gear here in Chicago but I’ve gotten a juno 60 for $75, a bass Rhodes for $250, two polysix’s for $250, one at a garage sale and one on Craigslist, etc. etc. but I also collect vtg shortscale and offset fenders
Cheers, welcome aboard. That's a great bunch of stuff, I'm jealous of city craigslist. I would trade my mark 2 rhodes for a piano bass, I need to start downsizing.. email me lol, cheers.
Great video my dude, those are some pretty decent deals you've found there, i'm kind of jealous on the Rhodes you found :p The 'best' deal i ever got was an Akai Timbre Wolf for $150 AUD, which i sold about two weeks later for $200
Ahh so did get the OPsix! I remember you were really eyeing it. Welp now I need some FM content! Also don’t beat up your key skills to much man! Coming from a pianist, you are better than you think, but you don’t have some, let’s say, unorthodox fingers for your chords.
After buying a used DeepMind 12 irecently discovered your channel and find very informative and entertaining. I had the Realistic synthesizer back in the 80 when I didn't know what Moog was and loved it and it just stopped working and I trashed it.... Yesh not smart in retrospect but when I see them for sale today for rediqulous money despite the nostalgia I know value for money I can find same and more sound options at much better price.
I skimmed the video to the items that I have and will watch the rest for work ;) . I got a Rhodes mkii eighty-eight suitcase with legs and minus the amp, the lid is in need of new tolex, and the keyboard had a restoration. I think I paid $720 or $780 CAD. Owner said it originally came from a radio station in Chicago I bought two AX60s in good working order. One was $725 and the other $500 CAD. I bought an MG1 in working order, with the typical 1/4" mod and filter in, no foam for $800 CAD. I bought a polysix from a friend since he was trying to sell it. He's good with synth repair so I knew it would be in great shape. It just needed a new LED piece for one switch. I paid $1100 CAD and he threw in a Baldwin Discoverer for free. I bought one SK-1 for $40 CAD and another for $80 CAD (I had been looking for one for ages, so a little desperate). Don't pay the insane prices people try to sell these for! It's cool only for the crappy lo-fi sampler. $80 was pushing it and people try to get hundreds for these... Honourable mention, I bought an akai s612 with the disk drive and I think 35 or 45 quickdisks for $100 CAD. Best purchase ever and the guy was a legit synth guy from the 80s/90s with an incredible collection. I think he saw it as a super outdated and limited sampler which it totally is haha! But it's amazing
We've got a lot of cross over! I'm sure that 88 rhodes is a pain to move around. I would LOVE that deal on an s612, I would love to process drums that way.
I had that UFX mixer briefly. I liked it quite a bit, but one of the effect channels didn't work and there was one channel with fucked up gain, this was a bit too much for gear I bought new, I ended up taking it back and getting a mixwizard instead. D-05 is a total secret weapon for pads. Once again, I'm the chump that bought it new, but I have no regrets, worth every penny.
My mixer is a bit noisey sometimes as well, need to let it warm up for a proper long time. D-05 is one of my favorites, I'm trying to think of the right way to cover it in a video.."The other digital icon" or something is where im thinking now.
@@JorbLovesGear Yeah, it's a tough one, I guess. It takes a special kind of masochism to program the thing, but for a thirty year old design, it has no right to sound that good. I'd go with "The best worst synth ever made (again)".
I totally relate (except for the selling/flipping part) I have: CZ-101 I bought new as a teenager Alpha Juno 2 I bought new as a teenager. I've done some work on it but the aftertouch is still no good. I gave my neph/niece my grandfather's SK-101. I'm sure they don't appreciate it and I hope to get it back someday. Nord Lead 2X I bought locally Craigslist $575 or so. Still learning it, current favorite. Moog Rogue I bought locally when a friend was moving away. "You have to buy this from me." "Ok." $700 New gear: Model:Cycles Zen Delay Erica DB-01 Eventide Blackhole Korg NTS1. I gave the neeps each one of those and we had fun putting them together. I may end up with a 3 voice NTS3 soonish see above. I'm selling: pro live sound gear.
Akai X7000 is a gem - if in good condition. Do I use it daily? No. But if not the 12-bit sampling does the sound, then the 6-pole analog filters! I've sampled octave-doubled strings from Yamaha TG33 and it does really wonders to the sound. The SK-1 reminded me that I did the same on X7000 with my voice and it sounds similar, it has electric organ feel to it. Add some distortion pedal to fx loop, delays and it's a fantastic instrument! The key point is to use lower sampling rate than you would normally use. The filter kills all digital grit and turns it into cool warm darkness.
Hey Jorb. Just discovered this video and very much enjoyed. I definitely had to subscribe. I also buy my equipment used at very cheap prices. I live in the northeast, CT to be exact. This area, especially living near NYC, is loaded with musicians and great music stores. Craigslist in this area is fantastic and have found many great deals. I also buy off of Ebay and a few buy and sell apps. I agree with you and have always shopped this way. I always buy things that I can make money off of if I decided to sell. If I were to list everything I got with prices, I think you and your viewers would get sick. Lol. One of the best deals I got in the last ten years was a Mackie 32x8 mixer with the meter bridge mint for free in NY. My recent deals I got was a Yamaha SY77 pretty mint for $100 and a 2 for 1 deal on a Yamaha SY22 with a Korg Microkorg for $190. My list would go on for days of great deals. To get these deals you do have to overdose on searches everyday. You have to jump on deals and try to buy as soon as you find them. Love your setup and deals. 👍👍👍👍👍
I'm jealous of a high population spot, with fast moving listings. I snatch up almost every bit of gear that shows up around here, which still isn't tons! I'm really curious about the SY77 how is it? Cheers, I'm proud of my setup AND my deals. lol
@@JorbLovesGear Yes being in a high population area like where I live near to is great. It does have its downfalls as there are other people like us shopping for items as well. You do have to jump on the deals as soon as you can. If you find a Yamaha SY77 for cheap, snatch it up. It is a great keyboard. I plan on buying some great patches that I found on TH-cam. I found a person who commented on a channel who found one for $50 just 2 months ago. Now that's a deal. I definitely like your setup. I can't wait to post mine. Happy shopping. 👍👍👍👍👍
I also have the MPC1000 which is the brain/sequencer of the whole hardware setup. I have the Six-Trak and the X7000, I got them in a three week period time window. I really like to pair the Six Trak with the MPC and a BCR2000, that way I can control (bcr) and record (mpc) every parameter for each individual voice. It has quirky midi setups but the CC implementation is very straightforward, it is the first poly synth that had midi! I think the Elektron Analog Keys got a lot of its queues from it. And about the X7000, don't be so hard on it. It is one of the (less than a dozen) samplers - from all existing brands- that has a variable clock for each voice, along with the s612, s900, s700 & s950. It has a nice analog lowpass filter that just works. The keys are super easy to replace and are shared by a lot of keyboards, look for an article called "How to Replace and Repair Dead Keys on a Vintage Synthesizer Using K32U Keys". As stock it comes with only 6 slots for sounds which makes it nice to sample drum hits, loops and sequence from the MPC. Mine came really beat up and with a dead QD, I paid 300, when I opened it, I saw the RAM expansion installed! I already restored it and will replace the QD with an emulator from Sampler Zone. It will live in the other room where the vinyl records are, alongside an Akai S20 and an Electrix EQ Killer. Thanks for sharing your experience!
That SK-1 ... my friend and I were blown away by that thing when it was introduced in '86 or so. Always tinkering with it at the local Meijer's shopping store (in their electronics department) or local music store.
I’ve got my eye on a re-201 space echo for 150. Functioning reverb, likely broken tape heads. I’d likely have pay someone to repair it if it’s intricate at all. Worth it if I’ve got a timeline and big sky on my pedalboard already.
Oh nice I've been hoping you'd do a video like this! Edit: dude really lookin forward to the effect pedal one Further edit: dude I'm so impressed with you fr. Like wow man, you really know your stuff and like, you're even fixing em and everything, so cool. I'm a little jelly haha for lack of better word. Maybe admiration is the better word 🙂
Cheers, and thank you! By some measures, its an obsession, but hasn't become harmful quite yet. lol I'm really excited for the guitar pedal coverage, its where my love of all this starts, and I'll have a lot to say!
@@JorbLovesGear as ridiculous as it may seem I'm totally stoked to hear about your experience with pedals because I've yet to see an excellent pedal video and I have a hunch you're going to really blow me away lol I got into synthesizers about a year ago and I'm just totally hooked lol this handle I'm using is brand new because channels like you, Bo, starsky etc have inspired me to finally make a channel for music.
I enjoy your videos. I do the same thing and only get used gear. My house rule is it has to cost 200 dollars. This last year after waiting and watching I got a Korg AE-1, a Korg Poly 800, and an Alesis Micron, all for 200 S+H included. Those are all incredibly under rated. Especially the Poly 800. People dislike that you can't play the filter with a knob on the 800, but you can play it with a button. It also has a 6 parameter envelope which can make weird sounds. Your korg poly six is very interesting to me. That would be a real keeper in my studio. I like the old stuff and still have my first synth I got as a teen around 1980 the Korg 770. It's funny seeing almost everyone has to have a moog. I have actually never liked the moog sound because it was/is so trendy and I can build a whole studio for the price of one moog. Your Rhodes and Wurlitzers are also very interesting. Some other odd balls I have not purchased, but come close to buying are the Technics synths. Those are a bit thin sounding, but they could be interesting in a mix or layered to double a patch. You may want to check those out. I am curious how many of these synths you use when composing. I have a small set up, 2 electribes, the poly 800, the micron, and a EPS 16 Plus. I've actually put 3 keyboards into storage as I don't really need them at all right now. Also, I am on the learning curve having to remember how to use the old EPS and the Micron right now. They are not second nature yet. I hate learning interfaces because it gets in the way of making music. I hit ye olde Sub button. I have a channel called David Megarry's Dungeon, if you could be so kind and return the favor. - Griff
Cheers, thanks for all that. 200 bones is a pretty tight belt, respect the commitment to it. I had an ex800 for a while , i love the sounds too. Technics are on my list now! I mostly pick a lineup of stuff I expect will compliment each other, 3 or 4 bits of hardware with my MPC and work from there.
@@JorbLovesGear Ha ha I think I watch your videos because you validate my own approach. I always shop for specific tools for less overlap. I just stumbled across your EX 800 video. It is the poor man's Juno 106. Yup. It's a beast. Totally under rated. I assume you installed a Kit that make the filters manual. What kit is that you used? TBH, I am not a filter tweaker very much. I am a complete pedal addict though. I run everything through about 3-4 effects before it hits the mixer.
First of all, I would like to honestly thank you for your work. I am starting in this (not quite shallow) world of synthesizers and your videos are coming really in handy for my endeavours for understanding the sound. For I am not very experienced, I was inquiring myself if it would be possible that you make more videos recreating other synths with your precious Deepmind 12 (since is the only synthesizers that I own at the very moment) explaining more in-depth how-to attain certain sounds as the Wurlitzer, the Mellotron, the Synclavier II or the Solina (I just saw you already uploaded a video for that). Prior to misunderstandings, I would like to apologize if achieving any of the sounds that I have named is impossible due to the architecture of the Deepmind12 since I speak from the ignorance of it. Thank you very much. (sorry if I made any mistakes writing, for English is not my native language.)
Synclavier is nearly impossible, for a few reasons, mellotron and wurlitzer can be strongly suggested though. I cover a few electric piano sounds in some of my older deepmind patch videos, but maybe its time for a refresh! Maybe one video on emulating classic keyboards.
One more note on the Juno 106 - you can get the System-8 with the Juno 106 plug-out and the sound (to my ears) is 99% there. I had two vintage 106's that I was able to sell and I'm happy with the System-8/106 Plug-out alternative.
At 5:32 when the deepmind 12 is played, it’s the exact same sound as the main synth in Nangs by Tame Impala. Pretty sure it’s the same chord as well, not progression just the first chord. Processed differently of course.
Interesting video and thoughts! The thing that's keeping me from buying vintage gear is my lack of technical skills, time and patience. I think you need to have a certain interest in repairing electronics (as well as working with wood and metal) for some of those deals to really pay off (but if you do, it really pays off!). Would be interesting to know how many hours you spent repairing/refurbishing the gear, in addition to the money spent. Also, living in sparsely populated country, far from large cities, it's not always possible for me, due to the distances, to view gear in person before buying, which of course increases the risk of getting scammed. There's something to be said for receiving a brand new piece of gear at your doorstep, ready do unbox and use, knowing that it's in 100% perfect condition and there's a warranty and technical support if things were to go bad. That said I do buy used gear sometimes, as long as the seller seems trustworthy and there are good closeup pics (reverse image search is your friend!). With gear that came out less than 10 years ago, you can get some great deals on gear that's still essentially as-new.
Very true, a willingness to 'figure it out' really does go a long way. Something like the JX-3P was a whole weekend(or two even) focused just on it, cleaning keys, cleaning contacts, repairing a few traces, reloading the patch memory, soldering in a new battery socket, and building new end cheeks. You're right, that is something I should value a little higher, knowing if there's an issue, I can just call up sweet water. Good thoughts!
I play my Yamaha CP to the point of exhaustion, excellent addition to my recording setup, eventually will need a bigger keyboard controller but man I just love The Rhodes and Wurlitzer.
Makes me miss my old SH-101. I got it new fire $199 in 1985 because, like most Roland gear, it flopped when it came out. I've got a room full of gear and haven't paid more than $500 for any of it. Nothing better than funding a crazy deal, huh?
There's all sorts of crazy deals, it's all luck in timing. Living in the midwest is probably the only reason I had a chance to get to it, slower / less competitive than a bigger city
I hit a rich pre-ebay vein in the nineties. Mono/Poly £80, Poly-800 £35, EX-800 £30, SH-2 £50, SH-09 £30, CZ-3000 £30, RZ-1 free, FB-01 £20, DX27 £40. I blew £700 on a new A4000 though.
I added MIDI to my CASIO SK-1, now it's one of my favourite synths. I had a MoPho for 2 days before I traded it away. I really liked the look of the instrument but that was about it./
Once upon a time, about 10 years ago, I got an Akai AX60 for approx. $250. Twice. I sold my Akai AX60 for approx. $350. Twice. I'm kicking my own ass now. Forever.
The irony for me personally is I bought the Korg sample 2 to sample! I love the stock sounds so much I haven’t touched it. I do not like the MPC workflow period, so most of my sequencing is on my ancient Qy100 (16 tracks stereo 32 mono) and my key step pro. So I use my brand new M 2 IPad for sampling on Koala and Blease Sampler. I love your videos Jorb! I hope mine can compare a little bit! Peace, don’t forget on the Rhodes having the back for it! I do not. I had one in the early eighties and had to get rid of it. I’m an idiot! Lol
This video should be titled 'buy used synths on Reverb, Ebay, or anywhere you can'. I like 'Jorb', seems like a good, everyday dude who's unafraid to purchase synths that aren't over-hyped and so sought after. I'm a fan of that because ANY synth can make music in the right hands. notes from the bleachers: The vintage 60/106's are eventual cost nightmares (it's when not if with these I'm sorry to say. Old Moogs and ARPs hold up better). Getting a cheap Bword Deepmind12 does actually make more sense today. Speaking of (the new) Bword: in comparing the two, Behringer's ODY is not only a better build than Korg's offering but offers more features for less $ (and same sound and functionality). Same definitely goes for Korg's ridiculous limited ARP 2600 repro (anyone paying that much for it deserves to be parted from their $). I could also still easily sleep at night if all Nord and new YawnMaha reface synths fell off the earth (but I'm in the minority there I know. Just can't seem to muster any interest in giving Clavia or the new Yammy my $ for garbage products). BTW Jorb, the SixTrak is (imho) the sleeper synth in your list here (the others are electric pianos). * Also, please consider a better (sounding) mixer than the older Behringer UFX and like. Sometimes things really are 'that bad' and not in the good way. One can find a great deal on an old A&H, or Soundcraft for example.
I know this isn't vital information but the thumnail for this, glanced at while its small before its been selected, you do look a bit like Tim the Enchanter. Think its the mic looking like a white streak in a beard. Also very interesting video, top work
Hello! Out of curiousity, how did you learned to solder? I have seen a lot of used gears fail on me and it would be great to hear your story on how you learned to solder and some advice on where to begin in learning soldering! Great video by the way, I keep on coming back and rewatch it!
Yes, you did forget something!!!! What about the little Yamaha QY100 (or was it a QY70) sitting on top of your broken Akai keyboatd sampler AX7000? I used to have a QY100 years ago and traded it in for a synth years ago. I still miss it. It was quite handy in many ways,. The sequencer was intuitive and most importantly,, it was very compact which enabled me to also use it as a little sound module along with an MPC1000 I had at the time.. If I still had it today,, I could still use it with my MPC One. Plus, I'm a fan of the old Yamaha XG sounds because I started using them back in the 90's when I first learned to midi sequence. I now have recorded music that I've created spanning over 20 years which incorporate Yamaha XG sounds. I later got an MU128 module just so I could have the Yamaha XG sounds and more of them.
AHH great eyes. That sucker has a totally broken screen, and I have all but given up on finding a replacement. Any leads? I would love to use it like a sound module, just like you say, i've only heard good things. Thanks for reminding me of it, maybe I'll go back on the screen hunt.
@@JorbLovesGear Sorry I don't have any leads as far as finding a replacement LCD. With that said, it is a really nice piece of gear and I hope you will be able to eventually get it fixed. Seeing that is just a reminder making me wish I had kept mine.
This is really good. I much prefer this over TH-camrs showing off their trophy synths. It's interesting to me that someone in their 20's has an interest in vintage gear. I see this gear through the eyes of someone who lusted after it when it was new (and prohibitively expensive), so there is a nostalgia component for me. Also, do you use all of that gear? I see people with large collections and I wonder how much of it really gets used? I really try to right-size my rig so everything I own is being used. If it's just sitting then I figure it should be sold to fund something else. I'm interested in your Volca Sample. If you ever do a video on it I'd be interested in seeing how you use it. Thanks
I have a sort of reverence for the old stuff, I find it exciting that these things were at one point contemporary products, and a lot of them stayed relevant. As far as using it all, everything gets enough time for me to learn it well before I sell it, but with this much stuff, it's impossible to use it all as much as I should. So that's one way I decide what gets sold, the stuff I stop reaching for. Right now, that means JX3P, all the moogs, and the PolySix.
I hear that sentiment a lot. You would be surprised at how easy it is to use all of your hardware synths when your studio is set up in a functional way, especially if you intimately know what each one is capable of and how to fit it into a track. I regularly, like 3 times a week, use at least 12 synths, often around 6 simultaneously. Depending on what I am working on, that number can easily double without any real effort on my part. Especially if you know how to layer sounds with intention. Flip a switch and push a button, and my master keyboard can play anything in my studio. I have different midi routings that allow for different sequencers to act as the master, depending on what my goals are. Easily switchable with the push of a button. I don’t have to turn on a computer, but can if I want to and everything within it is just as easily integrated and routed within my hardware setup. Some people buy things to look like a musician and some people buy things to use them. I know several people with large studios/collections and every one of them is using their studios as much as they are able to. Honestly, I have never actually met someone who is primarily a collector.
@@JorbLovesGear yo, don’t give up on the JX3P. They are making the Organix mod again which allows you to use the PG and midi in at the same time as well as have cc control over the parameters. Sell the PG and get a small assignable midi controller instead. I hated it at first, but now after owning it for 7 years it is indispensable. Gets used way, way more than the Juno 60 or 106.
Hi, I have a DM12 on the way. Would love to see a video where you go through the whole process of recreating one of your classic synth sounds for the sound pack.
I'm currently working in the PolySix patches, maybe I'll set the cameras up and record one! It can honestly be mind numbing, playing the exact same note or chord a dozen times on both keyboards, listening for any differences.
I'm really on the fence, I love it a lot, but find it tough to justify so many 6 voice polys. And the midi implementation makes me see it as sort of cumbersome
hey Jorb you forgot to mention the battery problem on the poly6 ! that’s one reason to be stay away from them I took a chance a while back and got a Alexis andromeda with two bad voices for a grand turn the two bad voices of used it as a 14 voice for about two years desired to turn them on and know they work! Great studio and I thought you were from Norway !
I mentioned it in my first take, but forgot on the second pass. It's a huge issue, essentially guaranteed to need attention. 14 voices sounds like plenty to me! I'm really curious about the andromeda, ill keep looking for one of my own.
oh yes, it is very difficult to let a juno sound nice. almost mission impossible.
Oh hey! That was my polysix! Thank you for being pleasant and easy to work with, I'm glad it's working for you :)
What is your 1st favorite volca?
The Behringer Deep Mind 12 is an absolute gem. I completely love mine :) AMAZING synthesizer!!

@@JorbLovesGear And I really like your DM12 coverage. That is a next level synthesizer.

Nice to hear that! Sometimes it is nice to look on the other side of the fence, isnt it? lol
you read my mind, "use the vallhalla delay". Great video btw, thank you for posting.
Cheers, thank you!
The repairing really does enable this for me.
And you're right, they're coming for everything!
MPC 1000 and 2500 are beautiful and not overly complicated - really enjoyed those machines
Long time synth user here Jorb. Out of all, the Poly six grabbed my attention the most. Great gear great stuff and great video. Thanks
Polysix is getting its own highlight eventually, need to find a good angle
I just stumbled on this video and I love your energy and attitude for synths!
Cheers thank you!
I try and not pre-plan on a way that takes my personality out of it. Feels best for me that way
AWESOME VID. I also have an Omnichord, am a gear buyer/fixer/flipper, and I got a mint SK-1 IOB last week for 20 bucks!
Keep the vids comin!
Cheers, thank you! Always more in the pipe
WOW what an Arp deal. AX80 is one of my bucket list synths, for sure.
Happy to share! Lots to say. lol
Dang you've gotten some crazy deals!!
I'm watching for deals, honestly, too much. And this is over ~3 years!
@@JorbLovesGear SAME! I got a clavinet d6 for free locally but I'm yet to repair it. Still waiting on vintage vibe to restock strings for it, not even sure if that's the issue either
Agree. If I'd bought all my kit that wisely over the years I'd have a lot more money in my savings :-\
Bought my JX-3P with the PG200 programmer new in 1983. Still have it. Works perfect. Couldn’t afford the Jupiter 8. The JX-3P had a sequencer while the Jupiter and Juno had the arpeggio.
Love hearing that, I's really exciting to me that these were ever contemporary products.
Glad you've kept it!
I have a MPC 1000, Yamaha CP and a Nord Lead 2 and a older Behringer mixer, first time seeing your channel
Welcome! Nice to hear that, that I'm not the only one who finds all these things together to be quite useful.
Had a good laugh at your channel description. It comes across very differently over here in Australia hahahaha. Glad I clicked though, not what I was expecting but it was a great vid!
LOL welcome aboard
Just hearing you mention playing an Omnichord as a Bard in a D&D campaign made this entire video worth the watch. Wish I would have had players like you when I DM'd back in the day. Good stuff man.

I didn't realize they had a different version of the Alpha 2! Very cool, I'll have to look for those now.
@@JorbLovesGear Yeah they did a couple home versions. They don’t come up often but they are out there. HS-10, HS-60, HS-80

😅😅 Felt right
Kinda disappointed you didn't go with my "list prices but show no synths" idea. ;)
Great video!
That's the next one 😁
man I've been doing what you're doing and it's basically allowed me to upgrade literally everything I have, these last 4 months alone I've literally found so much insane shit I can't get over it.
Maybe I should be using offer-up too, with luck like that. lol
Cheers, thank you!
You are the Deal Don. Cool video! Thanks!
My MPC 60 is the center of my synth world. Bravo on the 1000

Ok man! New sub. That Daft Punk progression with the CP convinced me haha 👍😎

Wow! Excellent video! I very much appreciate you sharing your thoughts and gear! Some good takes on many pieces of your gear
(I know you were borrowing the BS2)
bro u kept it so real throughout this video thank u
🙏🥲 Proud of that, cheers
Thanks for the guided tour! My gear is currently all "living" in a PDF document I made, because I'm trying to move house and everything is packed up. It's kind of both nice and depressing to page through the document, looking at all the instruments. I can't wait to get a studio set up again!
Quick tip about the OpSix - I recommend the in depth videos on the Oscillator Sink channel. That guy taught me so much I didn't know. It really is a very capable synth. I'd quite like to get the modwave as well, but they're out of stock everywhere at the moment...
Isn't that the worst, all the gear in boxes? lol
He's a wonderful resource, I have enjoyed sitting and chatting in a few of his deepmind livestreams.
Very honest and useful review . That Casio sampler was on sale in Belgium for 400€ I think . Crazy
I see repair content as being useful for someone looking to solve the same exact problem, worry a bit about it being valuable beyond that
yay, another channel triggering my GAS - subbed :)
Welcome! I have a video about calming that, actually lmao th-cam.com/video/gtyleiLc1eg/w-d-xo.html
Yessss show us your shame cave!!!!! I love shame caves. Great video!

Omg that Polysix sounds GORGEOUS!
Great video! Some of these old samplers with short memory sound amazing when used like synthesizers, processing short waveforms. Alpha Junos are still quite undervalued, extremely versatile and tons of fun when combined with a controller imo.
Im curious to try an alpha juno! An old friend has / had one, but I havent been around it since I've learned so much.

Binging the jorbs and lo and behold discovered some opsix content! And dire dire docks!? Damn. Fingers still crossed for that walkthrough. #jorbsix
I skimmed the video to the items that I have and will watch the rest for work ;) .
I got a Rhodes mkii eighty-eight suitcase with legs and minus the amp, the lid is in need of new tolex, and the keyboard had a restoration. I think I paid $720 or $780 CAD. Owner said it originally came from a radio station in Chicago
I bought two AX60s in good working order.
I totally relate (except for the selling/flipping part) I have:
CZ-101 I bought new as a teenager
Alpha Juno 2 I bought new as a teenager.
"You have to buy this from me." "Ok." $700
New gear:
Model:Cycles
Zen Delay
Erica DB-01
Eventide Blackhole
Korg NTS1.
Nice Behringer Swing you have there, Jorb! 🤣
I set it up for a meme video, and never actually delivered on it. lol
My brain is the RettoKits RK-008. Its like the old alesis midi programmer.
You don’t look like I expected you too. Lol. Didn’t expect the headbanger hair haha

That SK-1 ... my friend and I were blown away by that thing when it was introduced in '86 or so. Always tinkering with it at the local Meijer's shopping store (in their electronics department) or local music store.
I would love to hear more stuff on your modular man! I’m thinking about picking up a behringer neutron as my first semi modular
I had a neutron for awhile, good features for sure.
Never *loved* the sound, but I think it's a great way to break into it.
I’ve got my eye on a re-201 space echo for 150. Functioning reverb, likely broken tape heads. I’d likely have pay someone to repair it if it’s intricate at all. Worth it if I’ve got a timeline and big sky on my pedalboard already.
Soursound did a wonderful job for me, highly recommended.

@@JorbLovesGear and yeah my obsession hasn't caused too much damage either outside of some egregious credit card bills lmao
Looking forward to the deepmind pack for the polysix
Just wrapping up now, actually! Will record & release between today & tomorrow
Nice Behringer Swing ! :DDDDDD
loved the vulf tune on the wurli
One more note on the Juno 106 - you can get the System-8 with the Juno 106 plug-out and the sound (to my ears) is 99% there. I had two vintage 106's that I was able to sell and I'm happy with the System-8/106 Plug-out alternative.
Good call out! I've heard a lot of good things about these lately
At 5:32 when the deepmind 12 is played, it’s the exact same sound as the main synth in Nangs by Tame Impala. Pretty sure it’s the same chord as well, not progression just the first chord. Processed differently of course.
It is! I did a copycat patch, whole video on the channel. Enjoy!
that Tacsam 106 maaan those are nice!
Nothing feels quite like it...lol!
Rhodes MKII for $160, that's absolutely insane. Has to be the cheapest a Rhodes has gone for in the last 20 years...
Behringer Swing, good one ;)
Got my neutron for 160.00 uk , that’s a good price, absolute beast
Nice kit!! 👍🏻
Cheers, I'm proud of it!
I added MIDI to my CASIO SK-1, now it's one of my favourite synths. I had a MoPho for 2 days before I traded it away. I really liked the look of the instrument but that was about it./
Really solid don’t know I’m patient enough for all the searching an fixing
Really jealous tho
Regarding that Juno jack that you need to keep it halfways out... you might just need to resolder the jack to the PCB.
Next time my soldering iron is hot, maybe ill drop the juno in for a quick look. cheers!
Just found this channel and i am now a “converted” viewer
Cheers, and welcome !
Once upon a time, about 10 years ago,
I got an Akai AX60 for approx. $250. Twice.
I sold my Akai AX60 for approx. $350. Twice.
I'm kicking my own ass now. Forever.
Why didn't you keep one and sell one?
I'm a fan of that because ANY synth can make music in the right hands.
notes from the bleachers:
The vintage 60/106's are eventual cost nightmares (it's when not if with these I'm sorry to say.
Bro, awesome gear. I live in a black hole of used gear. Nothing good ever comes up in a plausible driving distance (within 6 hrs) it's brutal.
Great video 👍
Cheers brother, thank you!
My sister loved the Omichord I gave her for her birthday and just relit her love for music again!
I counted the timestamps and I think there is around 24 things listed in this video
Thanks lol
I love how you taped on "Behringer Swing" over they keystep lol
I should take it off so arturia might send me gear. LOL
@@JorbLovesGear Or you could leave it on, and Behringer will just send you the same thing with their logo on it ;)
I was looking for comments on this. Was wondering if that was a tacit recommendation, haha.
I know this isn't vital information but the thumnail for this, glanced at while its small before its been selected, you do look a bit like Tim the Enchanter. Think its the mic looking like a white streak in a beard. Also very interesting video, top work
I sold my SH101 for £70, which is what I paid for it way back when....Then the prices went up and up.
A different time!
The prices are insanely over-priced now, but 70 quid was probably always a good deal.
20:52 when i hear Wurli i hear VULF - excellent choice
😂🙏🙏Same
This is really good.
Don't sell the Polysix! That filter is magic.
Definitely not yet! I might look into midi kits...
Would never sell the jx3p if i were. So much regret selling it years ago.
I own a mopho too... Not much online for the yellow baby... No much even patches around :(
My ol cheddar king.
I would do patches for it if there was an audience, but I dont quite see it out there.
