I 100% agree on the crochet to knitting comment - I convinced myself I couldn’t knit - starting with crochet really helped me to understand yarn, gauge, recovering mistakes etc and now I’m a reasonable beginner knitter.

Good points, especially keeping your first pieces of work! :) However, as a beginner knitter (longtime crocheter -- over 40 years -- but decided to try learning to knit again only a few months ago), I would not have continued if I had only knit swatches. That would have been pointless to me and a waste of my time. Instead, I knitted a wash cloth (kind of like a swatch but with a purpose), and then a garter-stitch scarf (also kind of like a really long swatch but with a purpose). Those two things gave me the practice I needed to get started, but without the "I'm not really knitting, I'm just swatching" that would have nixed my efforts right out of the gate. Just my two cents' worth. :)

You know what ma'am, this video of yours really gives me inspiration to knit more, like every piece of advice that you've said hits me so hard to the point it makes me realize that knitting is about the joy and enjoyment you are having throughout the entire process, and your finished projects are just the representation of how was your journey while knitting it. Thank you so much for sharing this video for us beginners and baby knitters🧶 God bless, Ma'am!

I had to make MANY swatches of garter stitch before I could maintain a consistent stitch count. Then I undertook your beautiful gray and pink beginner's scarf and was that a learning experience! As a result I have learned to fix mistakes to some extent - I had to frog a row or two and finally learned to put the remaining loops on the left needle so they could be knit again onto the right needle. I'm almost done with the scarf and although it has a few wonky stitches, that's fine with me. So now I'm on to practice purling and the stockinette stitch, no matter how many swatches I need to do, lol. I'm a lifelong crocheter and I'm learning to knit in my late seventies - so you can teach an old dog new tricks for sure! Thanks to you, Brittany!

Thanks for the tips. I have been a crocheter for years and just picked up knitting. I have made some scarves and now am on my first sweater with the help of a youtube instructor. My biggest fear was making mistakes because you can't just frog them like crochet - you have to learn to "un-knit" them. But that has also been my biggest accomplishment, learning how to fix my mistakes which took the fear away. And I too think knitted garments just have a more polished look than crochet although I have made some of those as well.

100% agree that knowing how to crochet makes knitting easier!! i tried knitting a long time ago and got some basics figured out but crochet clicked a lot better. learning how to fix mistakes with crochet has helped make me more confident, knowing i can fix my knitting when i mess up!! i just made my first knitted hat from your tutorial and im soooo happy with it, even if it looks a lil wonky! thanks so much!!

🤔 Hmmn...I've been crocheting for over 20 years - my current job is crocheting - and I have to say, learning to knit was VERY difficult for me.
Crocheting is just SO fast, you can have a starting chain in a matter of seconds and your first row done in a few seconds more. No casting on, or casting off, just one hook in one hand and yarn in the other!
I can crochet a whole sweater in two days or so if I wanted to, and I understand all the stitches. I am so used to crochet that I don't even make swatches, I can tell what hook size goes with what yarn size, it's second nature to me now. (All thanks to my Granny who took time to teach me when I was a child, I miss her so much.)
With knitting, it was so difficult because it's slow going. Once you cast on your stitches and start learning how to make knit stitches and purl stitches, you feel like you're going quick - until you realize you've spent 30 minutes plus some just doing a 30 stitch cast on and the first row, which you probably messed up on haha 😂
I tried for years to learn knitting but I'd get so impatient and gripe about it to my husband! Just this year it finally clicked and I realized I can try continental knitting (improvised). I guess all I can say is to keep coming back to it if you get annoyed - don't completely give up. It gets easier! Especially if you have the Lord Jesus. Ask Him to forgive you of your sins - you know you've done terrible things in your life, to yourself and others. Only Jesus can absolve you of them. He took the punishment for your sins, and paid the debt you couldn't pay, then after dying on the Cross, He was resurrected 3 days later and defeated death! All you have to do is ask Him for forgiveness and place your faith in Him alone. You'll be saved and can have eternal life with Him after you pass away. No more suffering, pain, or sadness.Look up Ray Comfort and Living Waters ministries here on TH-cam. You won't forget it! God bless! ✝️🎉 John 14:1-7

Your videos helped me learn to crochet at home. I wish you would make a larger knit project with multiple stitches interconnected like a shawl or an afghan with videos for each section. I think that would be very helpful! Thanks for all you do! PS. I miss your podcast but understand why you stooped that years ago. 😊

I wish I would have known more about the qualities of yarn. Thanks for your video and sound advice. I am practicing stitches on scarves. I feel like I am not accomplishing much but I am learning how different yarns knit up and I am also refining my tension.

My first project was a disaster! I was in Girl Scouts, and we had to make a triangular headscarf. Got so mad at it, I bent the needles and threw them away! Tried picking it up a couple of times and it just didn't click for me. I was trying Continental style. I finally watched a whole bunch of different youtubers and found that my most comfortable way to hold was English, even though I crocheted for 50 years previously. Finally, about 50 years after my first attempt, it clicked and I've made several things. Right now I have two different blankets, a poncho and a hat on the needles! So my thing I wish I knew was that there are multiple ways to knit (Continental, English, Portuguese and I think a couple more). Experiment until you find a style that fits you.

That’s a really great point! I also tried continental first since it felt natural to hold the yarn in that hand from my crochet years, but honestly…it never clicked! Flick knitting is the style that feels most natural to me now.

Greart suggestions. I was fortunate to have a yarn shop owner teach me to knit. All of the bits of information she gave me saved me a lot of mistakes. I still made plenty of errors and was frustrated at times Knitting is still not the easiest for me. I've been crocheting since I was seven and its so automatic. With knitting, I have to think about each move I make. I agree that knitted garments seem better than crochet ones, but I'm no fashionista.
