  • This video is about how to use a PLB correctly as a sea kayaker!! We got a lot of positive reactions after releasing our “Sea Kayak Safety Equipment” video about lifesaving equipment. Now we are showing you our McMurdo FASTFIND 220 PLB, with some useful information, as well as a realistic training exercise that we conducted with the Coastal Rescue Services (IKWV) from De Panne. Have a look! Are you carrying a means to call for help? Is it a PLB, or something different?

    love the vids. I'm over in South Florida and just recently got into the sport. Love all the safety tips, I'm still only doing inland paddling, buying and selling boats trying to find the right one. Your vids are a huge inspiration the way you have everything dialed in. thanks a bunch

    thank for the video.
    I paddle in pacific ocean in group, and alone.
    Usually used two communication system, Radio vhf and Cell phone, red flare (2) in the life jacket.
    spectroscopy light no.(flash light)
    And used helmet when the water is rude, in open see,
    Exit same helmet whit flashing light ?? for easy localization ??.
    Y need (all) practical rescue with Coastal Rescue Services .

    Hey, another great video! Thank you for the great information! As we are collecting our gear, I know this is very important piece of it for sure. Do you change your own batteries? Or do you send it back to be replaced?

    • @Northseakayak
      @Northseakayak  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Ken, thanks a lot! Batteries need replacement after years, and this happens by the manufacturer. That way the seal is closed again properly. They also check the wiring and electronics from the inside while replacing the batteries. Cheers!👍😊

    Thanks for this video. I have one for my land-based adventure though but I have bought a packraft recently and will be using it for the boating. Question : do you need to be out in the open air to test this device?

    • @Northseakayak
      @Northseakayak  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for watching and commenting! There are 2 tests: battery check, and GPS receiver test. You can find all details on this on the McMurdo website. Cheers!👌😊

    What other PLB would you recommend other than this one? Im trying to make a decision on one but so many options and SOOO many opinions. I dont go offshore too often but I do go into the back country here in Florida and i tend to paddle alone quite often. So I definitely need one.

      Hi there! I'm sorry, I have no experience with other brands or models. Others will probably also do the job, maybe have a look at reviews or other videos? Maybe go to a ship chandler where they can give you proper advise. Hope you find what you are looking for!

    When I sea kayak I know all the dangers and as you can see from photo I paddled out to old soaker in Acadia National park. It’s an island that has never been landed on before, vanishes at high tide and at low tide is a mountain with no beach to land on. I study the weather, timing the tides, and dealing with currents, I know the wind speed and direction it will make swells in the water. People die here on the beach hit by wave and pulled into sea, never found again in Atlantic 40 degree water. I tell the person I’ll be back in hour (slack tide chosen) reach island walk around it as break then rodeo jump back into kayak and leave as tide changes to high pushing in. - having a personal locator beacon is a must. What happens if I did t reach the island and flipped over in water or failed and current takes kayak away in milliseconds? Never returns and lost in an ocean invisible. This is why drysuit is needed that’s bright red and colorful. When all hope is lost I just float in 40 degree water with signal in sky for rescue. I used inflatable kayak because there was more pros than cons. It had a fin underneath to steer and was lite to be able to land on island with crashing waves (soaker) and pull it up on to it. But nobody in their right mind would ever try such a thing as it’s a complete death sentence. I knew hard plastic is extremely vulnerable to hitting rocks without sinking. A normal boat would never even go near the island for you’ll shipwreck and then you won’t even be able to save your kayak or boat. I pick material like navy seal does bouncy rubber float. It will hit rocks and bounce off like tubing. Once in 40 degree water you’ll die in 20 minutes or less when arms freeze and you accept death in a panic.

      Good to hear that you are taking safety protocol very serious, thanks for sharing your point of view! Be safe and enjoy the water! Cheers!

    • @polymathperspective
      @polymathperspective ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I hope people know the dangers and how people die every year over being unprepared for what they are getting into. In my case a drysuit was needed cause of water temperature. But it’s a deadly game if a person just showed up at any time and decided to just do something not caring. Lots of people pass this way, but even on a small pond and flip over in winter or fall. At that point without a life jacket to let you do tasks you’ll need free hands to do, and the water temperature you won’t be able to at all. Then lose

    • @polymathperspective
      @polymathperspective ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Northseakayak statistically they say you can live an hour in 40 degree water. But those calculations are not including body limbs freeze in 20 minutes and go numb and then it’s over. Biggest danger during fall and winter. In 20 minutes you drown and not in an hour at all. A person can instantly hit such a water temperature and open mouth in shock and instantly begin to drown. Hypothermia may take an hour in 40 degree water (no drysuit) but your limbs go frozen in 20 and drown then

    • @Northseakayak
      @Northseakayak  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Lex, Yes, I did. It is not the first time we train this offshore. It is also the only way to have a realistic feeling about beeing out there, all alone and IN the water. Of course, precautions are always taken in advance. 👌😊

    Does this PLB show you your distress call has been received?

    • @Northseakayak
      @Northseakayak  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This one has not, but those type of PLB's are beeing developed. The only thing that is still missing to make this device perfect. Anyway, once the light starts blipping, rest asure that help is coming.😊👌
