  • I can't believe how incredible this Buddhist temple is just 15 minutes away from Arugam Bay! It's a shame that most visitors and travelers to Abay have never seen it as it's one of the coolest sights I've been to.
But before the temple, we wanted to have our last local breakfast in Pottuvil Town at one of our favorite Rotti shops. But this time, we decided to order everything from seafood to beef, let's see what our money can buy us!
    Location: Muhudu Maha Viharaya
    Map: goo.gl/maps/6XWjeNCLsDcXHocw5
A Buddhist temple with over 2000 years of history. According to the Sri Lankan historical inscriptions, the temple was built by King Kavantissa marking the land of Viharamadevi to the Rohana Kingdom. Viharamadevi was his queen and mother of King Dutugemunu who holds a prominent position of Sri Lankan history.
Temple is located in Potuvil, closer to Arugam Bay. Breathtaking view of the Indian ocean. Beach is amazing. Visit either early morning or afternoon as its burning hot.

Johnny, that place is called Muhudu Maha Viharaya which was built by king Kavanthissa 2000 years ago. And the place was well known for the landing site of Princess Viharamahadevi who self-sacrificed to once save the island from a tsunami like incidence. She then met King Kavanthissa and became his chief queen later giving birth to one of the famous and great kings of Sri Lankan history, King Dutugamunu. It was this king that built the famous pagoda Ruwanweliseya in Anuradhapura. You can witness his miracles if you visit Anuradhapura, one of the famous tourist attractions in the country. That long line of monks are recently being built. Keep it up bro.

The temple that you visited has a very old history. It goes back to AD 2 (Around 2300 years) what you saw in that temple was not even 10% of real history . As far as I know the beach sand naturally made that land. This history started when the woman on that boat (which we saw ) landed. Even though Iam a Christian that temple talks a lot of Buddhist history which Iam proud of , unfortunately people around that area has no value for it. They have destroyed the history. Iam so happy you enjoyed that temple cause I love that temple.

The " woman " was a princess. ,the daughter of the king who ruled the western part of the country., close to Kelaniya. ( ancient Temple built by kings , place where the Buddha once visited) . This king was named Kelani Tissa.
According to the "Mahawamsa" the great chronicle of ancient Buddhist sri lanka ( it does not cover the era before the establishment of Buddhism in the country) , the mild but rising Tsunami was created by God's who were angry with the king for punishing a buddhist monk of Utmost Purity (an Arhant) by death. King thought the Arhant bhikku was helping to bring a message to the Queen from her lover, whom the king had already expelled, when in fact the message was delivered by another man posing as a buddhist monk. To appease the gods king was advised to give away his daughters life to the sea for the gods to decide her fate. The Princess, being of exceptionally courageous, of pure conduct and faithful to Dhamma, willingly offered her life in order to protect the lives of people of the kingdom who would otherwise get flooded / drowned. The sea water levels receded after her boat drifted away.., and it landed in the southern coastal area called Kirinda, close to yala national park . The southern king called Kavan Tissa married the Princess, and later she had 2 sons who did the greatest service to establish buddhism in the country. The elder son Gamini ( Dutu Gemunu) , the hero of Mahawamsa, built the Ruwanveli Maha Seya in Anuradhapura ( it enshrines the second biggest collection of Buddha Relics)

Is there a sign stating people shouldn't stand there? No. You Buddhist say that your religion promotes tolerance so why can't you be more tolerant here? You people are real hypocrits. These calls to remove the picture of him standing amongst the Buddhist statues is uncalled for. I wouldn't criticise someone who walks into a church and does not geniflect before they sit down at the pew. Just leave hime alone to do what he is doing. He loves Sri Lanka and that's important.

We believe that circumambulating a stupa purifies negative karma and fosters realizations of the path to enlightenment.
Women statue which was on the boat (Sanghamitta)
Sanghamitta was the eldest daughter of Emperor Ashoka (304 BC - 232 BC) and his first wife, Devi. Together with her brother Mahinda, she entered an order of Buddhist monks. The two siblings later went to Sri Lanka to spread the teachings of Buddha at the request of King Devanampiya Tissa (250 BC - 210 BC) who was a contemporary of Ashoka. Ashoka was initially reluctant to send his daughter on an overseas mission. However, because of the insistence of Sangamitra herself, he finally agreed. She was sent to Sri Lanka together with several other nuns to start the nun-lineage of Bhikkhunis (a fully ordained female Buddhist monastic) at the request of King Tissa to ordain queen Anulā and other women of Tissa's court at Anuradhapura who desired to be ordained as nuns after Mahindra converted them to Buddhism. After Sanghamittā’s contribution to the propagation of Buddhism in Sri Lanka and her establishing the Bikhhunī Sangha or Meheini Sasna (Order of Nuns) there, her name became synonymous with "Buddhist Female Monastic Order of Theravāda Buddhism" that was established not only in Sri Lanka but also in Burma, China and Thailand, in particular. The day the most revered tree, the Bodhi tree, a sapling of which was brought by her to Sri Lanka and planted in Anuradhapura, and which still survives, is also celebrated every year on the Full Moon day of December as "Uduvapa Poya" or "Uposatha Poya" and "Sanghamittā Day" by Theravāda Buddhists in Sri Lanka.

The history of Magul Maha Vihara possibly dates back to the period of King Kavantissa (205-161 BC) who ruled the Kingdom of Ruhuna in ancient Sri Lanka. There are evidence that suggests that the king has built this temple in the 2nd Century BC on the exact location where he married the princesses Viharamahadevi, the daughter of king Kelani Tissa. Other sources claim that King Dhatusena (463-479 AD) built this temple while many other monarchs renovated it through the centuries later. There is a stone inscription at the site of this temple that dates back to the 14th century which supports the latter view.[4]
According to legend Viharamaha Devi, the daughter of King Kelanitissa volunteered to sacrifice herself to the sea to appease the gods who were enraged at the King for punishing an innocent monk.[4][5] The princess was safely carried over the ocean waves, reaching ashore at a place near the Muhudu Maha Viharaya in Pottuvil, where the encounter between king Kavantissa and the princess took place which later led to their marriage. The legend also tells that the marriage ceremony was conducted at the premises of Magul Maha Viharaya in Lahugala, where the King had later built the temple to celebrate the auspicious event. The foundations of the Magul Maduwa where the wedding ceremony took place can still be seen at the temple premises.[6] Magul is a word in native Sinhala language which gives the meaning wedding or auspicious.
Magul Maha Vihara had been renovated by several monarchs after its establishment. A 14th century stone inscription, located within the temple premises, reveals about a queen who also had the name Viharamaha Devi, wife of King Buvenekabahu IV of Gampola and Parakramabahu V of Gampola, who renovated and donated many acres of land to this temple. Magul Maha Viharaya is inscribed in this stone inscription as Ruhunu Maha Viharaya. Some other sources reveals that king Dappula I (661-664 AD), constructed this temple after listening to the preachings of Buddhist monks. It is speculated that around 12,000 monks inhabited the complex at some stage in history, which is evident to the largeness of the ancient temple.

This place has a huge historical value in our written history of over 2500 years, in fact this place was built about 2300 years ago and continued to be in good condition until two - three decades ago. In 1948 government gazetted ( before British left the country) 272 acres out of thousands of acres it had during ancient times to the Temple.
Out of 272 acres, now the temple has only 3 acres and other areas has been captured and built houses by some extremist people in the area , they want to erase the history in the area, the government didn't pay much attention to the historical sites of this area during the war so that some people had the chance to destroy the places and grab the land.
It's very sad that people don't understand that these historical sites belong to every human being because it tells us about how we lived in ancient times.

This comment is not true. You claim Sri Lanka is a Buddhist country but that is not true. It has large Catholic population, not to mention the Hindu Tamils and Muslim populations. Ceylon also had a vibrant Bergher community from the Dutch, Portugese, Spanish and British colonial days. Much of them emigrated to Australia and other countries because of this pro Buddhist Sinhala. Don't disregard this history! You are trying to wipe out a period of history that is really important for the Island. You people get Lampris (aka your favorite lump rice)from the Berghers. Its not a sinhalese dish. If you go visit the Woovendall Church it has all the records of the Bhergers who lived on the Island. My great grandmother was Portugese and I have ties to Scotland as well. Sri Lanka has been a continuous buddhist country ( super majority is Buddhists) for over 2500 years and it's very well documented and can be seen very clearly by visiting thousands of ancient buddhist historical sites all over the country.
From time to time we got other religions due to various reasons ( Muslim traders, Portuguese, Dutch etc) and we respected other religions and allowed them to follow their religions.
"The Lord Buddha ' teaching is love all living beings "
We love and respect all the other religions and ethnic groups.

I hope you realize that this town is part of the traditional homeland of the Tamil speaking peoples (Tamils and Muslims, where Tamils are Hindu or Muslims). The fact that the are Buddhist statues all around is because the Sinhalese Buddhist dominated government has used the war to massacre and occupy and colonoze these lands and artificially place Buddhist temples and statues around as if to claim it as theirs and erase the history of genocide. You may not have realized it when you made these videos, but they are definitely very offensive. Especially since the genocide has not been in check, and will intensify soon. Take a look. I think it would strengthen your videos and make them much more compelling to intertwine the story you found easily with the house story that it conceals, sort of the story behind the story
