I took a nearly 5 year long hiatus from collecting in 2019. I’ve just recently got back into it this year - and at a great time too. One thing I’ve decided to do as I’ve entered back into collecting is that I will NOT buy what I don’t want to keep. Easier said than done, I know. 😂 But I do try hard to keep to that.

Part of why I like your videos so much is that you explain your thought process leading up to the making of the video. That way you clearly have looked at the many sides the the topic (ie, ‘no one is going to carry your bag’ for a too-high asking price is to recover from an overpay in the first place). I didn’t pick up comics during the boom, which I’m glad about,as I know I would have overpaid. But I know I have overpaid on books since my return to comics post-boom, and this video helped me with my own thought processes on what I can and should do about it, as well as what to potentially expect and - in the worst case scenario - accept the outcome. Thanks Ryan for all the work, and insights, you put into your comics videos.

I have to call out Regie on this. I loved watching his shows, so it's not a knock. He used to preach that people should be buying the big keys first and then work down to your smaller grails. This was all in the midst of the bubble, so anyone focusing on big books would be doubly screwed over by pandemic prices. The sellers were raking it in though.

I often list books high in case spec hits with a movie or show announcement.

I was watching your videos during the comic boom. It was a crazy time. The thing is that you weren’t the only one to want the books at crazy high prices. I bought some books that 3X FMV.

I completely agree with your video. Many sellers intentionally put ridiculous prices on their books because they know they won’t sell. They just want to throw them out there in the vain hope that someone will want their books and pay their ridiculous prices. I’ve also been buying Golden Age books like early Batman and Captain America Comics as they are so tough to find, especially in 6.0 and above.

It's not 'in the hope someone will pay'. It's to keep the appearance of the market high. So when they put books up for sale, they will seem cheap by comparison.

I purchased my Fantastic Four 1 in 2022 with the same thought that if I wait any longer I'd never be able to get it. It was only a CGC 1.0 but still took a lot to get it. Almost immediately after I bought it the value tanked. Now 2 years later I can probably buy 2 copies of FF 1 for the price I paid. Essentially I'm stuck with or will have to take a huge loss if I upgrade.

We were in the same boat on the same book in a cgc 1.8 blue label. We opted to "package" a few boom books with a few books we had lots of equity in to absorb the losses and ended up with 1 book for our 6 books. A year later now and we couldn't be happier with that decision.
