  • You Are There! We finally got things sorted out on the Sopwith Snipe, and it was time to take her up on her maiden flights at Fantasy of Flight. I figured why not throw a Kermie Cam on and take you along. Parts 1 and 2 feature an in depth pre-flight, warm up and taxi, including a singing wire to deal with... and then its up and away in Part 3. Hope you enjoy the ride. - Kermit Weeks (20130811)

    Isaac; I believe this is at Kermits Field in Polk-City west of Lakeland . It's a nice spot, they give a nice tour and there is a snack shop that does a good breakfast...Hal

    Nice tip about leaning out the engine mixture to dive from high alt. I'll try that in the Rise of Flight sim :)

    I always appreciate it when someone knows to use flush cutters to cut their tie wraps!

    I would have thought that the wires would have a torque setting.

    After watching theses Snipe videos 777 Studios flight sim: Rise of Flight has done a excellent job simulating this era of aviation. Thank you Kermit for posting these videos keep them coming sir!

    Why does he keep pressing that button making the engine cut out while taxing?

    • @oldcremona

      I believe that’s the only way to control the RPM’s on those early aircraft.

    I thought one of the reasons for the heavy coats pilots wore (other than being warm) was to protect the pilot from ruining his uniform with castor oil. Doesn’t Kermit ruin his shirt with castor oil?

  • @Oliverdobbins
    @Oliverdobbins 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Apparently, RAF pilots who flew these during WW1 would end up consuming so much Castor oil that it would give them serious "bathroom issues". Castor oil is/was also used as a laxative...

      Very unlikely that the bowels are affected castor oil vapors: none of those currently flying rotary powered A/C, in recent decades, Cole Palen, Fred Murtin, Tony DiMarco, and certainly, Kermit, himself have never mentioned it. None of the thousands who flew them in The Great War ever left a comment suggesting an issue. Most likely the Freudian theory of 'Anal compulsion' will explain the interest by some modern commentators?

      +WarblesOnALot In 1918 most likely the RAF erks in Northern France would just want to get the thing flying (they were at war after all...), so would get a bit of wood from the wood shop and tie it on with waxed Linen thread, and sort out the rigging later on, if it came back from patrol...

    I can't believe that engine is coming close to 100 years old! I guess simplicity has it's advantages! This thing is too cool, but I think about the poor chaps who flew these (or any similar vintage plane) into combat. Sitting in a plane whilst someone else is shooting at me is not my idea of a good time. Being perched directly atop the fuel tank as that is happening does not help waiver my opinion!

      No, you are right. What I meant was, that I fly the over computerized aircraft. Those were the real airplanes which you had to fly instead of using an FMS.

    Kermit is a bad pilot,he doesn't take any chances on his own life,but he sure do risk people on the ground.Imagine him crashing into a living area with one of those Gasolinebombs. Anyway,the guy won't make it past his 70´th birthday.He is spreading money around to self confessed experts working on these planes,and he gets taken for a ride..Literally.

      I've watched his videos of visits to shops working on his aircraft. I'm sure he pays top dollar for the best work. I'm not an aircraft mechanic but I am a professional mechanic and fabricator. I know good work when I see it. It seems to me his people are doing top notch work.

    • @amorimontagnus2042
      @amorimontagnus2042 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      you just jelly @patrikez1- how would you know if he's a bad pilot?
      the guy won several aerial acrobatics championships, and his videos are top-notch.
      all WWI aircraft were 'gasolinebombs' so if you like vintage aircraft of the period, that's what you're dealing with.
