Simply reading the Wikipedia could tell you that the Wright brothers flew their plane more than once, and not in secret. I think inviting photographers would have been a pretty poor way to keep a secret. Wikipedia states that the Russian Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI) studied this in the 1970s and found that Mozhaysky traveled 100 feet from a ramp but that his wings and engine were insufficient for sustained flight. But with the larger engine Hozhaysky had planned before his death, he might have succeeded! It seems even more people around the world were closing in on the solution than we realized.
