In November 1908, they set a world altitude record of 360 feet (110 meters). The altitude of their first flight, 5 years earlier in 1903, was 10 feet (3 meters). They weren't scared of heights, they were setting new records!

Amazing how long ago it it, and we use them all the time now. And to think aircraft carriers use a similar takeoff system!

In 1905 the Wright Brothers flew their third model 24 miles, circling a field near their home in Dayton for 39 minutes nonstop. It's true that the Wrights used a launching rail and skids. Their first flights were from sand. It's also true that in the end their plane turned out to be a dead end. But it is also true that while Santos-Dumont had only flown 220 meters when Wilbur Wright showed up in Paris and flew. 123 kilometers, staying aloft for more than two hours.

The Wright Bros were skillful enough to see how several proven ideas could be used to construct a reliable type of aircraft. And they also spent a lot of money from their own business to try it all out.

Incorrect. Santos Dumonts' "aircraft" could not manuever and he abandoned the design because HE thought it was impractical whereas the Wright Flyer could manuever and flew circles over the crowds. The French newspapers had no problem acknowledging the Wright brothers' accomplishments and they were held as hero's. The Wright brothers were very successful in their aviation business among which included their own flying school which trained such famous aviators as General Hap Arnold..

Err.... The Wright Brothers first flew a heavier than air gasoline powered aircraft in 1903. According to my math, that's 3 years before Santos. Santos flew a lighter than air craft around the Eiffel tower in 1901.

Sequer conseguiram sair do solo. A réplica era fiel, mas faltaram os ventos fortes que ajudaram os Wright a decolar em 1903.
Não preciso falar mais nada. (I need not to say anymore else)

According to the website The Atlantic, the picture above, of December 17, 1903, captures the exact moment that Wilbur and Orville Wright can, for the first time, take flight with an aircraft "heavier than air" - designated thus by using parts of their structure or their own wings as a means of support - in North Carolina.

I keep seeing that the "use of catapults disqualifies" what is called an airplane. If we use that bit of internet logic, then every jet fighter from the F4 to the F22 that takes off from an aircraft carrier is not an "airplane". Even the Harrier jump jet is not an "airplane". I know there is this desire among many people to want to minimize the accomplishments of the United States of America, however when you have an event that happens and then three years later you change the rules to attempt to revise history retroactively, as the Federation of Aeronautics did in Paris, that doesn't mean something is erased from history. And I've been hearing about Gustave Whitehead since I was a kid, and that was never really proven.

According to the publication, the image authored by John T. Daniels can see Orville Wright lying on the controls while Wilbur runs alongside aircraft, following liftoff. However, despite being so celebrated - and arouse heated discussions today - the "plane" of the Wright brothers only got off the ground thanks to a sort of giant slingshot that catapulted the device.

  • @N73B60
    @N73B60 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

LOL... I never said aircraft carrier planes aren't planes!
I just said that, from all the AUTONOMOUS planes commonly used in the modern commercial aviation, the first ever created was the "14 Bis" and not the "Flyer I".
Although the Wright Brothers indeed pioneered in creating the first havier-than-air machine, it was not the first AUTONOMOUS one. This is an undeniable fact!
If you deny this fact, you're being like those religious fanatics which whom we can't have a normal conversation.

However, some time later, Americans Orville and Wilbur Wright proved they had made the first flight three years before Dumont.
So far so good. All the experts, even those who advocate Dumont, agree that the Wright brothers first flew, however, that proponents of Dumont preach, is that the Wright brothers' plane was unable to take flight alone or to keep in the air on its own, being aided by the strong winds blowing in the region.

The original flight had occurred three years before Alberto Santos Dumont off with your "14-bis", lasted 12 seconds and ran 36 meters. Hundred years later, a replica of the Wright flying machine, piloted by a flight instructor, even took off. font:

Simply reading the Wikipedia could tell you that the Wright brothers flew their plane more than once, and not in secret. I think inviting photographers would have been a pretty poor way to keep a secret. Also, I think that many would agree that deciding the importance of events by reactions of political figures and media is a little flawed.

No, you are incorrect.According to the the Aéro-Club de France, the world’s leading authority in aviation at the time, S Dumont airplane, did have rudders for control and was a able to perform maneuvers. What is obvious is that Dumont invented a airplane that took off and landed by itself without the need of any outside assistance. Wright bros built a glider that took off with the help of a catapult and rails with no landing gear. This is a historic fact and you can't refute.

Cayley's designs were all based on kites, initially the classic peg top kite that was popular at the time. They were gilders, and had a distinct tail area with both vertical and horizontal elements. The one design that apparently successfully carried a passenger, a 10 yr old boy, had a basket slung underneath it, much as balloons did at the time. though there's not much evidence that it was a controlled flight. Yes Sir George was a visionary in this field. But the WB's didn't copy what he made.

Proponents of Wright assert that these arguments of Brazilians are absurd and that before Dumont, the Wright brothers had already run several successful flights.
Brazilians use to philosophy: "If a tree falls in the forest and have no one to watch or listen, that tree really fall?"
While the fight continues nationalist, different countries have different passages in their history books. But to do what? History has never been and will never be an exact science.

Show me an airplane that needs no wind to fly.... by your logic the F-14 Tomcat and the F-18 Hornet isn't an airplane when it launches from an aircraft carrier. BTW, the longest flight of the 14-bis was 220 meters! The Wright Flyer in 1905 (one year prior to Santos Dumont) flew for 39 minutes a total of 24 miles (that's 39,000 meters) at an altitude above the spectators' heads.

I'm not trying to take anything away from Santos Dumont Sergio.Getting the kind of recognition that the Wright brothers got didn't come from their invention alone. It also took marketing skills. Wilbur Wright happened to had a natural talent for this as well. They're all great men.

Thank you, we had not heard of Alexander Mozhaiskogo/Mozhaysky before. Wikipedia states that the Russian Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI) studied this in the 1970s and found that Mozhaysky traveled 100 feet from a ramp but that his wings and engine were insufficient for sustained flight. But with the larger engine Hozhaysky had planned before his death, he might have succeeded! It seems even more people around the world were closing in on the solution than we realized.

@ricksk81993 do u see wood and fabric planes flying today? no, and this does not mean the father of aviation was the first to build an aluminum aircraft!
and any plane taking off from a carrier use a catapult still today.
i really cannot get your point, it sounds like silly and out of place patriotism.
(I am a great admirer of Santos Dumont btw)

In 1906, Alberto Santos Dumont takes off with his 14-bis in Paris, flying approximately 220 meters. It was the first public display of an aircraft flying at this distance autonomously and thus Santos Dumont became known in Europe as the inventor of the airplane.

Traian Vuia (Romanian pronunciation: [traˈjan ˈvuja]; August 17, 1872 - September 3, 1950) was a Romanian inventor and aviation pioneer who designed, built and tested the first powered monoplane. His first airborne test traveled about 12 metres (39 feet) on March 18, 1906, and his best distance was 24 m (79 ft). This was the first short flight or "powered hop" by a monoplane.[1][2][3]
