Former Hostage of Al Qaeda in Syria Rejects Jolani’s PBS Makeover: “They Are Lunatics with Guns”

  • PBS Frontline released a long anticipated documentary featuring Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, formerly the head of Jabhat Al Nusra, the al Qaeda affiliate in Syria, which is now called Hayat Tahrir al Sham, or HTS. Jolani is attempting to rebrand himself and his organization in an effort to be removed from the US terrorism list so he can be legitimized as the leader of Idlib in northern Syria.
Has Jolani and his group’s allegiance to al Qaeda really changed? Or is this a sinister charm offensive to maintain and even gain more power with the backing of the West in order to continue his campaign to collapse and takeover Syria and impose an Islamic State no different than ISIS? Did PBS whitewash Jolani? And why do journalists who should know by now the jihadist reality of the opposition to the Syrian government continue to treat them as glorious revolutionaries?
To discuss this and more, Rania Khalek is joined by Theo Padnos, who was held as a hostage of Jabhat Al Nusra for two years, enduring day after day of torture and getting unique insight into the group. He’s also the author of the recently published book Blindfold: A Memoir of Capture, Torture, and Enlightenment.

At Breakthrough News we believe in the power of independent media. Five mega-corporations dominate the media landscape - controlling 90% of what we read, watch and listen to. They control the news cycle, to which social media and even most “alternative” media is forced to respond. We are breaking through that cycle.
We tell the untold stories of resistance from poor and working-class communities - because out of these stories we will construct a different narrative of the world, as it is and in real time.
People’s movements in every corner of the globe are changing history and shifting consciousness. But these movements barely receive any coverage from the corporate media. They need visibility. They need amplification. They need a media arm to break through.
We can be that media arm, but only with your help. Become a Patron and join us on the front lines in the battle of ideas.

Wow! Rania does some of the best, most interesting interviews I’ve seen lately. The Joseph Massoud interview was another top notch video, worthy of a second watch. Thank you, Rania.

HTS does torture prisoners, as was confirmed by Bilal Abdul Karim (American journalist who was living in Idlib). But the master of torture are the Baathists, not only in Syria but also in Iraq under Saddam Insane.

It is known that the CIA kidnapped many people and brought them to Syria where they were tortured by Baathists on behalf of the CIA. This was before the so-called Arab Spring, as part of their 'rendition program'.

Wow! I love your work Rania, long time fan, but this is the best interviewee I’ve seen in a while. What a Spirit. Theo Padnos talks so nonchalantly about going through horrors and still keeps genuine compassion for all other actors, from clown western diplomats and journalists, to some of his own captors. It’s not fake, he’s the real deal.
I wish I would had been in Saana and Damascus before they were destroyed by western actors backing local warlords.

I don’t think of his as a hero but a stellar witness that can bring down all the BS being spewed around as facts, just from his own experience. I hope he does. That would turn him into a hero.
Still all due respect for Theo.

Rania, you should do a report on the family histories of these mujahideen, akin to the short one you did of al-Julani at the end of the video, only more in-depth. I found it really fascinating. Thank you for all your amazing reporting!

Pardon me for asking, but the rainbow emoji got me wondering. I thought it was a sign of LGBT solidarity, but I haven't heard before of RK being LGBT. Or does the emoji have a more general meaning now?

I expected just a dreary story confirming what I basically already knew about the crowd that's in charge of Idlib at the moment, but this interviewee turned out to be a really special kind of human being, even fascinating at times. A very humane disposition in more than one sense. Not just open-minded, but also incredibly positive, unaffected, good-natured and genuinely sociable in a way I only wish I were capable of being. I imagine that this might have helped him survive. He reminded me vaguely of some characters by Tolstoy or Dostoevsky, but with more common sense. In fairness, I'm not sure I'd agree with all of his more general conclusions about the situation in Syria, and I thought he was too soft on many of the people that were mentioned, but I cannot help admiring his overall attitude and outlook. Again, this was the last kind of video I expected to cheer me up, yet, strangely, it did.

The problem with this interview is that it has this narrative that the Syrian civil war as just between HTS and the regime.
HTS is a relatively small group in Syria at about 15,000 while the Syrian national army is more than 100,000

    • @michaelmike1519
      @michaelmike1519 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

first of all . the syrian war is not a "civil war" . it is the syrian arab army and their allies, fighting mercenaries or terrorists armed and trained by other countries hostile to the current syrian government. Most terrorists are not syrian but are foreigners brought in to syria.
HTS is just the newest terrorist group but there were many before them who got annihilated. Basically the HTS is just the new al-nusra front. these fools just get a new name thinking people won't notice.

🤣🤣 3:12 MBS is also a great leader, his “opponents” love him to bits.
Pretty soon Jolani is gonna be hiring Giuliani to help with his chill mobster swag.
I wrote the paragraph and then it turns out Jolani already had hired a comedian for PR, Amb. James Jeffrey, 45:56 unfortunately not the similar sounding Australian. So it’s more ironic but less funny.
