I found your channel a few weeks ago and it is now my favourite cubing-channel. You make videos about techniques I've never seen before, like the EO lookahead video, it's brilliant and I have never seen anyone talk about it before. The other cubing channels are just talking about stuff I already know about, but you teach me new things! Hopefully my comment made your day a little happier! :D
Yes it did make me happier! Thanks :) The EO look ahead video idea was one of the reasons I wanted to start a channel actually, since I like talking about ideas and I hadn't heard that one before.
I was 11 when the cube first came out. My dad got me one and the then a week later got the solution book from Norris. Back in those days there was only one cube, and it was made by Rubik. I remember having to use Vicks vapo rub to lube it. You popped open an edge, put a dollop in it and then worked it around. My cube always smelled like menthol. My best times were 40 and 45 seconds, and back then that was pretty good. There was no internet to check out other solutions or get advice...you just memorized the moves from the book and hoped for an easy solve...also there was no finger moves, so everything came from the wrist and turning the cube around.
J Perm I used the only method available, the James Nourse book. I remember my dad got it for me, and spent the entire night solving the cube using the book. When I woke up the next morning the cube was solved. It seemed like a miracle. Back then, if you were into the cube, you were instantly labeled a "nerd" and subject to ridicule, no matter your score on Ms. PAC-MAN, or how much you liked football, or how cool you were otherwise. About 6 months after the Nourse book came out there was another solution by a British guy. I got it, but the moves were all different, and it didn't seem to make sense to relearn, especially when 45 seconds was respectable. The Nourse solution, if I remember correctly, was edges, corners, middle edges, bottom edges, and then bottom corners. After the cube, there was the Pyramid, then the Rubik chain, then various barrel puzzles with sliding pieces, then the Orb, followed by a puzzle that looked like a bunch of rotating stars...that was a bitch to solve. After that, came The Barrel, which was wickedly difficult and without the solution manual, impossible for mere mortals. The solution book was difficult...made the Nourse book seem like Mother Goose. After that, was the Rubik puzzle with the interlocking rings, followed by the clock. Nothing took hold like the cube, though. Also, the original cubes had very dark, distinct colors...the red was deep red, the blue, was blue, and the yellow was yellow, not green yellow. The only way to make your cube speedy was with sand paper, Vaseline, and proper tightening of the center screws. Even at that, it wasn't very "fast" like today's speed cubes. Also, cubers back then only used Rubik brand. Off brands were dollar store garbage with weird colors, crap stickers, and pieces that fell apart easily.
Wow that's a lot of history at once. About the dollar store cubes, I actually owned a few before and they would all break after a while. The friction was even worse than Rubik's and the plastic was cheap and thin and squeaky. Rubik's stickers were terrible though, and the dollar store cubes had tiles which were nice. I don't know if the color scheme on those cubes were correct, but I feel like they were not. Vaseline seems like a joke now but it was actually so effective. It made my Rubik's brand turn decently fast, and the only thing holding it back was complete lack of corner cutting.
J Perm Well back in '82 technology was limited to what kids could think up, so it was Vaseline. I think someone tried WD40 but that melts the plastic. Most of the people doing the cube were 15 and younger. This was a running joke at the time, that you needed to be 12 to solve it. On TV, it was usually adults watching 12 year olds twist the cube. I think in math departments the cube got respect but it was generally seen as a toy by the public...kids were good at it because their brains were more "plastic" or whatever theories they had. You have to remember there was no internet back then, so you were stuck with the book...at least I was...my dad didn't work in a math department, so it's possible there were some underground notes circulating but I didn't have access to them. When I was 12, access to information was the most frustrating thing to endure...that and figuring out how to get a girl to hold your hand...you were limited to the public library or a good bookstore, and finding things in the stacks was hit and miss...card catalogue said it was there, but then the librarian said it was checked out and should be back in 3 weeks. Bookstores were limited to what was popular. If I had had access to the internet back then, my speed would have been reduced by half.

2:17 "What's your story?" My story is quite similar to yours. We may have started around the same time then. Cubing was pretty small when I first started and I didn't have anything better than the Rubik's brand for a few years actually, so I know how you feel when you say Eastsheen. In fact, the real speedcubes weren't even that much better than the Rubik's DIY, just like how the Eastsheen was literally the only alternative to the Rubik's 4x4 and was therefore godly. And thanks for the sub and the story! It's nice to hear from cubers who have been around for a while. And if you improved your 3x3 to sub-15, that would definitely help your 4x4 as well :)

yes, this is easily becoming my favorite cubing channel. was I living under a rock or sth? thanks for your awesome videos! they are just the things we need to hear to improve!
Ok his story is like mine almost exactly. For my Rubik’s brand I sanded each piece for months and got sub 1 with beginer method. And I always just loose interest in cubing then get more interested in it
I took a near year break, only 3 weeks ago I came back, and I learnt roux, 6 CMLL algs, and bought a new cube (with a £10 budget) which was the MoYu aolong v2 and my time has dropped from my first roux solve - 2:25 to now - I average 58s.
Honestly I'm a beginner, and my average is 3 minutes with CFOP and 2 minutes on Beginner method... and I want you to teach me and my beginner friends are also watching, how to make the cross on the bottom without having to match the color edge and center first, memorized it and where the edge first to be executed.. :D I wish you make the playlist for beginner CFOP and advanced.. ;) Why.. ? because we love the way you explain it.. ;)
I'm glad the videos have been helpful! For the cross, I think it's mostly practice + everything I already said in the other video. It can take some time, so try learning 1 tip at a time (out of the 7 tips). Are there any other topics you want to see, specifically?
Thank you.. ;) Other topics is.. Avoided this mistakes of doing looking ahead, and in depth practice of f2l and looking ahead.. :D and you still owe on us, is the part 2,3,4, etc of advanced F2L.. ;) you have lot of jobs to do.. :D Good Luck.. LOL xD
omg LOL yes i have been slacking on part 3. I don't know if I'll keep naming it as multiple parts, I might make better titles like "edge control" or "multislot", etc.
When I was a year into cubing I thought that the rubiks brand cubes are the best. I bought it and it had been one of my biggest mistakes. To make it smoother I put Vaseline in it because I didn't know the meaning of a rubiks cube lube. I approached sub25 and found out that this speed is going to take me nowhere. Then I bought a gans air master. Currently using a UM. And looking forward to buy an sm.
Actually I think that there are a higher number of CFOP records because of the nature of the method. In roux you do the same steps and almost never get skip. However with CFOP getting OLL or PLL skips is more common and can even be manufactured in your F2L. That's why I think that you can overall get better more consistent averages with roux but more PB's on CFOP.
when i was 9 i saw my bro cubing so i asked him how to solve it so i learned and eventually my bro quit 3x3 and he gave my his dayan zhanchi we built up our collection and i got a 50mm zhanchi because i broke my hand to practise oh (which i never did) then i quit. but recently i say my friends at school cubing so i picked up my zhanchi and relearned cubing, then at school it popped and i lost an edge peice for a day so i ordered a yulong v2 and learned begginner oll and pll, and i learned skewb, 5x5, pyraminx and megaminx
Nice video =) While I'm no expert myself (more of a casual cuber) I think Roux is a really competitive method for beginners to learn since it needs fewer (lengthy) algorithms. DeeDubbCubing has an excellent beginners tutorial which is where I learned it. Also it might be a good idea to try a few methods to see which one is more appealing. To each their own though.
Sorry you comment got marked as spam by youtube's algorithms, since you mentioned somebody else's channel. But yeah I've seen him on the forums and saw the tutorial too. I still think CFOP is easier to learn since it doesn't require as much creativity, which many people struggle with as a beginner. But he made it a lot easier than I thought Roux could be as a beginner method, so for that reason I thought it was great.
Oh, I had no idea that would count as spam; I purposefully avoided links for that very reason. Sorry if it is inappropriate I can edit it away if so desired. Maybe you're right though, CFOP is a bit more "mechanical" which is an advantage I suppose. I learned Roux after Beginners Method with F2L and some LL algorithms added so maybe that made it easier to learn Roux even though they're quite different.
TH-cam doesnt really tell me when comments get marked so i have to go check and approve certain comments, not your fault haha. I feel like roux is a lot easier to switch to than it is to learn right from the start, and looking at the world records, it's hard to come up with an argument for teaching roux to a beginner. I feel like they'd all want to learn cfop anyway based on the records. hard life for roux
How you colour neutral. I say this because for me colour neutral is harder to me. Can you make another video for colour neutral and advance colour neutral and what is the name of this cube because it's have very bad lockup and don't use this cube
you have great stuff and your way of making videos make them very neat and efficient. I loved your PLL video and I have question about it. I see different cubers (good speedcubers) have different way of executing PLLs. Im a newb myself and Im very bad with PLLs and i cant decide which fingertricks or algs are best for me to start practicing. As I said, im bad with all of them, so trying them out doesnt make much difference to me.
Thanks! When in doubt, just settle on the standard algorithm. XTownCuber has a video on the best PLLs, where he shows a few good ones per case. Chances are you'll like the standard ones he shows, and you can always change later on which is not a bad thing.
When you said that that you don't like big cubes, I actually like a lot of Twisty Puzzles. Also, my 2x2 average is sub 15, 3x3 is sub 45, 4x4 is sub 3:20, 5x5 is sub 9 or 10, megaminx is sub 12, Pyraminx is sub 22, and skewb is sub 45. Also, those are all averages. Do they translate well to 3x3?
+Nabranes TwistyPuzzler By translate, do you mean like helping your 3x3 improvement? they all have similar aspects, so yes. Bigger cubes all have the 3x3 stage, and all puzzles help with looking ahead to next steps.
I mean like, if you have a certain time on 3x3, the translation on 4x4 would be a certain time on that. When you said you were horrible at 4x4 compared to 3x3 was a translation. So, is 45 seconds on 3x3 the same as 3 mins on 4x4? And also for the other puzzles?
+Nabranes TwistyPuzzler Idk about the bigger cubes, but for 4x4 I think multiplying ur 3x3 times by 4 is approximately accurate. Everything else looks pretty good too, as far as I can tell, except maybe skewb is slow.
J Perm Ok thanks, and I knew skewb was slow. My skewb doesn't really work well & I don't feel like learning the intermediate algs, so I can't even get that much better at skewb if I wanted to.
Roux is equally as easy to teach as CFOP. If you disregard block building and CMLL, roux is actually easier to teach to a beginner. They don't need to learn about block building at all. They can just just build it like beginner method. They can use sune and a perm for the corners, which they learn in the beginner method. After that it's just M and U moves. The problem with roux is it's not as fast as CFOP and it differs from the beginner method, which is what most people learn first. And then they try roux and they don't understand it. That's why many of them go straight into CFOP, it's not because it faster, it's because it's easier to understand transitioning from the beginner method. ROUX's only problem is that for block building, recognition is difficult, compared to F2L. Once someone masters block building Roux has the potential to over take CFOP. Of. Of Course that's all dependent on the scramble. Because for yusheng du's 3.47, CFOP was the best method to use for that scramble. Some scrambles are better for roux, and some are better for CFOP. Currently the avg Roux solve is 40-50 moves, a lot less than CFOP, but it's a lot harder to learn than CFOP.
Is colour neutrality giving cfop solvers an added advantage over, say, ZZ which eliminates cube rotations and orients edges at an earlier stage in a solve? Which would be more efficient?
ZZ eliminates cube rotations but *in my opinion* the amount of moves it takes is not worth it compared to CFOP's cross, which eliminates the need for L2/R2. Color neutrality is not really relevant since ZZ solvers are usually y-axis color neutral as well. I think that CFOP is better for 2 hand and color neutrality is not why.
I haven't practiced BLD in a long time, so I'm not sure. Probably around 2 mins, but it was more of a casual hobby. I do OH, some 2x2, and I don't do the non-cubic puzzles.
wow! it's projected that you'll hit 953 subs in a month, 1543 subs in 2 months, 2132 subs in 3 months, 3.9k in 6 months, 5668 in 9 months, and 7437 in a year! thats crazy!
Back in the day when i was using a Rubik's i put sunflower oil. And it was awesome, but after 3 months ( i got Gan 356) it dried out and the cube didnt turn at all. I used this oil with a Gan also but i use it a lot so it didnt ''stop'' the cube.
paul Hayman so pretty much what I said. only an advanced cross isn't necessarily an xcross. and stuff like off centre and combinations to do multiple at the same time fall under the category "quick"
Definitely, all those things are within the category of advanced cross. Since I already made a video on cross and x-cross, I was wondering if there was anything I missed, since I still got requests for advanced cross. I believe there is nothing left, and everything I said in the cross video is all you need to build a cross like the best in the world.

yes, this is easily becoming my favorite cubing channel. was I living under a rock or sth? thanks for your awesome videos! they are just the things we need to hear to improve!
You weren't under a rock, I just never thought to make videos until a few months ago haha I'm glad you enjoy these :)
Amazing Videos, and a well set up channel! You just earned yourself a subscriber!
+Justin Choi Thanks :)
Ok his story is like mine almost exactly. For my Rubik’s brand I sanded each piece for months and got sub 1 with beginer method. And I always just loose interest in cubing then get more interested in it
+Jackson Aiken I never modded my Rubik's but I actually modded a v-cube once LOL
A perm is the best, feliks is amazing at them too
Conor Sheridan Feliks's favorite is U perm though.
xxTechno - Cubing, Roblox and More! Favourite might not be the best though
I don't even do CFOP anymore but my fav was h-perm (even tho i knew only perms where corners were permuted)
I don’t like a perms bc I always take like 3 seconds to recognize them lol
@@chocomint8261 no its a perm
Hey man, thanks for answering my question in your video.
I took a near year break, only 3 weeks ago I came back, and I learnt roux, 6 CMLL algs, and bought a new cube (with a £10 budget) which was the MoYu aolong v2 and my time has dropped from my first roux solve - 2:25 to now - I average 58s.
Sub 40 with the beginner method? wow! I didn't know that was possible with the beginner method!
That part talking about the rubik's brand was hillarious 😂😂😂
Honestly I'm a beginner, and my average is 3 minutes with CFOP and 2 minutes on Beginner method...
and I want you to teach me and my beginner friends are also watching, how to make the cross on the bottom without having to match the color edge and center first, memorized it and where the edge first to be executed.. :D
I wish you make the playlist for beginner CFOP and advanced.. ;)
Why.. ?
because we love the way you explain it.. ;)
I'm glad the videos have been helpful!
For the cross, I think it's mostly practice + everything I already said in the other video. It can take some time, so try learning 1 tip at a time (out of the 7 tips).
Are there any other topics you want to see, specifically?
Thank you.. ;)
Other topics is..
Avoided this mistakes of doing looking ahead, and in depth practice of f2l and looking ahead.. :D
and you still owe on us, is the part 2,3,4, etc of advanced F2L.. ;)
you have lot of jobs to do.. :D
Good Luck.. LOL xD
omg LOL yes i have been slacking on part 3. I don't know if I'll keep naming it as multiple parts, I might make better titles like "edge control" or "multislot", etc.
Like ur channel.
Never unsubscribe.
I learned and used COLL for a few months, and then dropped it after I realized that it was actually slower for me than normal OLL+PLL.
What to learn after oll.
LEARN PLL DUHHHH. But cll is a good option too
Most people learn full PLL before full OLL
+Charlie Harrison First 1lookpll, then 1lookoll, then coll, what next?
Charlie Harrison wait really? I must be doing it wrong
Most people learn full PLL before OLL.
What kind of fool learns OLL before PLL?
I have a Rubik's Brand too! No lube! Just loosened the springs. Still sub 19-23 -_-, but ur vids really helped.
I think by advanced cross, they mean building the cross in the bottom efficiently in around 7 or 8 moves, I'm guessing?
Ben Nolan I think that's what it is too. To be honest, I thought advanced cross meant making an x-cross
I'd assume they mean "x cross" but what they really should mean by advanced cross is pair tracking
I think they mean either Xcross, efficient crosses, cross-f2l transition or lookahead? CN doesn’t really just fit under cross.
I agree, high variance methods are better for records for sure, compared to a similar speed low variance method.
HEY JPERM! CAN YOU HAVE A TUTORIAL IN MAKING MAGNETIC CUBES OR LUBRICATING A CUBE
+DY CUBING no, lubricating is one i still need to make and for magnetizing I feel like CriticalCubing or speedcubereview must have one.
when i was 9 i saw my bro cubing so i asked him how to solve it so i learned and eventually my bro quit 3x3 and he gave my his dayan zhanchi we built up our collection and i got a 50mm zhanchi
because i broke my hand to practise oh (which i never did) then i quit. but recently i say my friends at school cubing so i picked up my zhanchi and relearned cubing, then at school it popped and i lost an edge peice for a day so i ordered a yulong v2 and learned begginner oll and pll, and i learned skewb, 5x5, pyraminx and megaminx
dessnom what do you average now?
I see really easy X-crosses in like half of the scrambles...
Oh wow. Small world. There's a local cube group on FB, not sure if you've joined, but there's a meetup this weekend if you're interested.
Yeah I'm in the group and i'll probably go to that. Are you going?
Indeed I am, hope to see you there!
I like how the maru lube just chillin there
+Jordan Lee it's been chillin for years and still about 1/3 is left haha
Omg 😂
Nice video =)
While I'm no expert myself (more of a casual cuber) I think Roux is a really competitive method for beginners to learn since it needs fewer (lengthy) algorithms.
T perm is the best I must say
Probably my 3rd or 2nd favourite after h perm and j perm
Chances are you'll like the standard ones he shows, and you can always change later on which is not a bad thing.
can you do a video on tips for getting sub 12
I will always love t perm I like jperm an all but i still like t oerm
Music will always give you better concentration
What method should I use CFOP or ROUX
J perm(the pll) is faster but it changes AUF.LOL
Can you make a video on M moves. I struggle with M2. Others are just fine.
+Grey YZ Cuber I do ring + middle finger for M2, but it took a lot of practice to be fluent.
"what's your story" your answer is exactly my story 😂😂😂
He got furious on the very first Q
Double flicks are great
H perm because it is easy to memorise and J perm because it is fun to execute
I love light sticker, fast and stable what should i get??
Which alg do you use for J(a) perm but on the left side?
+A Silly Stranger mirrored Jb is the only decent option i think
Is colour neutrality giving cfop solvers an added advantage over, say, ZZ which eliminates cube rotations and orients edges at an earlier stage in a solve? Which would be more efficient?
ZZ eliminates cube rotations but *in my opinion* the amount of moves it takes is not worth it compared to CFOP's cross, which eliminates the need for L2/R2. Color neutrality is not really relevant since ZZ solvers are usually y-axis color neutral as well. I think that CFOP is better for 2 hand and color neutrality is not why.
My favorite permutation is Y Perm
do you do megaminx? pyra? 2x2? squan? OH? Also what do you average at BLD?
I haven't practiced BLD in a long time, so I'm not sure. Probably around 2 mins, but it was more of a casual hobby. I do OH, some 2x2, and I don't do the non-cubic puzzles.
Can you make a video about zeroing method? thanks!
when you answered that a j perm is better than a t perm I was solving and I got a j b perm and I got 6.11 solve :)
I also paused on cubing before when I'm using beginners method, because I don't know how to get faster. I continued when I discovered cfop.
Man my first speed cube was a lanlan then the guhong came out shortly after i got it and i really wanted that, but i was a kid with no money
If I am right :you have won 1 gold medal, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals
wow! it's projected that you'll hit 953 subs in a month, 1543 subs in 2 months, 2132 subs in 3 months, 3.9k in 6 months, 5668 in 9 months, and 7437 in a year! thats crazy!
Haha how did you come up with those numbers?
socialblade.com :)
J Perm probably a website called socialblade, which shows u ur stats
TJ Cubing holy crap I was watching back these vids and he already has 1.1k
+Jaycubing10 Holy crap has it actually been that fast? I wasn't supposed to hit 953 for another few weeks haha wow
I usually think of advanced cross as what the beginners call the normal cross for better cubers
Which method you use and can zz method be solved to get pb under 10 secs. Also can you make video on zz eo line and first two layers
You should definitely get to a video on that
A video on what
My favorite is H perm!
i like this style :D
Thanks!
Back in the day when i was using a Rubik's i put sunflower oil. And it was awesome, but after 3 months ( i got Gan 356) it dried out and the cube didnt turn at all. I used this oil with a Gan also but i use it a lot so it didnt ''stop'' the cube.
i like the Q&A LIKE J PERM
J perm do you have any tips besides the ones in your videos on advanced f2l? I've been struggling with getting fast f2l, and need some tips. Thanks!
+Cll Cubing For efficiency, watch example solves. For look ahead, i have a video and its mostly just practicing a lot of untimed solves
J Perm thanks I'll be sure to watch more example solves in the future.
Can learn all zbll algorithm
when people say 'advanced cross' i think they just mean very quick and on the bottom, like good speedcubers like you do them
liuxoB advanced cross means making an x cross, solving them in relation to each other then fixing it, solving it off centre.
paul Hayman so pretty much what I said. only an advanced cross isn't necessarily an xcross. and stuff like off centre and combinations to do multiple at the same time fall under the category "quick"
Definitely, all those things are within the category of advanced cross. Since I already made a video on cross and x-cross, I was wondering if there was anything I missed, since I still got requests for advanced cross. I believe there is nothing left, and everything I said in the cross video is all you need to build a cross like the best in the world.
How to trigger J Perm: J perm < T perm
how could u get 1180 WRs in 2x2? { according to your WCA Profile }
In 2 look pll in the first part is j perm with headlights or without headlights?
Hell yeah I remember 20 zbll
What timer do you use
Why does he have a pack of cards just chilling on his desk......
Can u make video of hard oll cases?
3:02 wait you broke the world record by 3 seconds?
R U like the inverse of non-color neutral because you use yellow as your first cross every solve.
can you please tell me you went to classes of rubik or you learned by your self?
How do you smash the space bar exactly when you finish? I use a PC keyboard and often miss one or two seconds
Can you please make a video on all the oll algorithms you use
+ansh bardia it's coming soon, I already filmed it
hi I'm new to this channel but I just noticed the red rider backs and sharpie, are you also into sleights?
+Jay Velasquez no, idk what sleights is
+Jay Velasquez and welcome :)
A point 1080p(guess)-480p(Guess)
Who else paused to try to read the blurred comment
I’m learning j-perm rn :D
