Gale force winds & powerful swell hailed the arrival of storm Ciarán on the North Devon coastline. Filmed at the peak of the storm in Westward Ho! this short captures the power and beauty of the turbulent Atlantic ocean.

Loving the storm shots and 4K in this one! What camera /setup were you using?

Thank you, usually when I’m filming on land I use the Panasonic GH5 with a Metabones adaptor and Canon lenses. I sometimes use a Black Magic 4K cinema camera The global shutter on this camera gives a really film like look. For in water filming I use GoPro’s. The conditions during this storm were so horrendous that filmed almost entirely with a GoPro’s.

What time was this filmed?

I got down at around 8.15am, at that point the wind and swell were not that powerful. At around 9 ish the wind and swell piked up dramatically. I was filming between 8.30 and 10.00

I’ve photographed and filmed allot of storms over the years, I think this morning was the wettest and coldest I’ve been. I should have just put a wetsuit on.

Thanks for your feedback, its always a tough call in the edit to balance a natural soundscape with music.I spend so much time in ocean listening to the sound wind and waves, I always try and incorporate that into my films. In the future i will try a few edits with just natural sounds.
