I wish you would take this opportunity while your children are small to teach them all three languages at home, English, Korean, and Nigerian it’s very important for them being Multicultural children. you can’t be close minded by saying only English at your house my brother. I am a child of a multicultural family born in Africa. 💚💛♥️🤎✌🏽🌎🌍🌏

Children have a capacity to learn up to 5 languages at the same time. And the father should take advantage to teach them Nigerian as well. Saying English only, his being close minded. I grew up in multicultural family as a youngster and I spoke up to five different languages. I’m today fluent in 3 languages. 🙏🏽

@@LifeisEnergy2 , I think if he had the time he would teach them Nigerian as per the discussion with Dianna. It is the overwhelming presence of Korean he is pushing back against. The children are submerged in the Korean language and WILL pick it up easily as a result. It is possible for his children to not learn enough English if they are not intentional about it. His children are not exposed to English speaking opportunities at all other than at home. He is being intentional, but he is also going way overboard, in my opinion.

I respect the other family's view, but I don't think only 1 language should be spoken at home. Children can learn multiple languages at the same time. I like that Dianna speaks English and Kyungho speaks Korean to Minj and Jun. And even at their age they know to switch to English when speaking to Mommy. Lovely reunion though, kids enjoyed each other. ❤

I’m sorry as a Nigerian female myself, seeing how overpowering the Nigerian dad was so triggering. I hope he treats his wife and daughters well especially with them being women. A lot of Nigerian men (not all) can be extremely misogynistic, old-fashioned and traditional, and treat women as below them, my dad did, and the trauma is REAL. Hopefully it’s not the case with him but the way he was like “NO ENGLISH IN MY HOUSE” was a huge red flag and he was yelling the entire time and overpowering everyone smh. But once again hopefully I’m wrong.

As a Korean living in the United States and currently in a relationship with an Iraqi-American girlfriend, she always say that when our kids are born in the future, I should speak Korean to them while she speaks Arabic, so that they can learn both cultures and languages at home at the same time. For Kenneth, I’d like to recommend him that once in a while, like during kids’ summer or winter vacations, bring them to Nigeria and give them a chance to be exposed to the Nigerian culture and language. By doing so, they’ll be able to learn their father’s culture and language easily.
And for kids education, I’d like to tell Dianna that for the elementary school, sending Jun and Minji to Korean school is okay. However, for the middle school and high school, if they are to live in Korea, I’d recommend her to send them to the international school in Seoul or Incheon.
Education system at the international school is providing more diversity and balance to students than the Korean one. Therefore, for middle and high school, Minji and Jun should go to the international school if they are to live in Korea. Or if Kyungho can relocate to the USA from his job, it would be even better. Kids can be exposed to more to diversity promotion, as well as growing with the balance between sports and academics. If he can relocate to the USA later, I hope he can consider it seriously.

Bilingual homes really help kids learn to think with flexibility and learn new concepts easier.

They will learn all of those regardless of mommy speaking to them in English. Remember that they spend most of their waking hours at school and with friends. They have formal Korean lessons at school every day. Mommy speaking English balances their language learning experience between the two languages, so that they become comfortable hearing and speaking both languages.

    • @containeduniverselow4790
      @containeduniverselow4790 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

He mentioned that they would learn those in-betweens from just being around Korean people outside the home. Their friends are going to use those terms just like learning English slang that the average parent doesn't even understand.
If they didn't live in Korea, I could see the issue, but they're in the best place for learning Korean.
Then, if they go some place non-Korean speaking, their English is going to be on point as well.

Vernon from seventeen. who grew up in Korea, who is an kpop idol! Doesn’t speak Korean at home either as his mother doesn’t really know a lick of Korean. As per my own experience, I think it is great that both of you speak your own native language to your kids, it shows them that both languages are equally important.
My mother tongue is French and my husband is English, I also stayed home and raised our twins, for me, I spoke both languages to them so they could communicate with their dad also. However at some point, English took over, and I realized I was speaking less and less French to them.
Luckily, we live in a country where French and English are both official languages, the province where we live is English speaking. but we have access to French education.
Now that the twins are in High school, French high school, I make an effort to speak French only to them, maybe less when their dad is around so he can be part of the conversation.
The twins are fully bilingual, and are also now learning other languages on their own, one is learning Spanish and the other one Swedish.

But actually my dutch skills are better than many native belgians because of the fact that i grew up bi-lingual. i also learned french and german at school and learned english througg social media and now even korean through korean content. in my opinion, the kids should speak korean to their mom and the dad’s native language with their dad, they can learn english by consuming content in english

Hi guys, it was interesting listening to that father say his children must only speak English at home (his wife looked quite uncomfortable when he was saying that), does he speak Korean? As a Speech and language therapy, we encourage parents who speak two different languages to speak to their children in their dominant language (so in your case Diana you speak English) and (your husband) speaks Korean to your children at home. Studies have shown that children can learn 5 languages at the same time. Please continue doing what you are doing, children understand more than what they are saying. A child who is 3yrs uses 2 - 3 word sentences, 4yr old 3 - 4 word sentences. when speaking to your child it is important to not use complicated words and as children of that age are only picking up key words. For example if you say to your child:- "Put dolly on the table, they understand but may just pick up these key words "dolly on table". Basically use age appropriate words to aid your children's understanding, do not use adult terms or words. You both having been doing a good jobs because their verbal language has increased. There is a lot of information on language development, raising bilingual children. There is a Chanel called "Yoruba Pikin". The father is Nigerian and speak the Yoruba language to his 3 boys (at home), their mum is Polish and speak her language to the children (at home), they live in Finland and learnt Finnish from school and they also speak English.

@@wolfgangxx9560 I read and re read what you wrote.
In Vernons case his mother was his primary caregiver was she not? So it made sense that she communicated in her language.Communication is most èssential to the development of parent child relationships.
Secondly the Han min incident in the Uk has nothing to do with his ability to speak English. The incident took place because of the ignorance and prejudice of the immigration officer.
Last I checked a passport is a valid form of identification and it clearly states the nationality of it's holder. It should not matter what he looks like.
While being able to communicate in English would be an asset to him,in his line of work there are many models worldwide who only speak one language.
As a parent of a multicultural, multilingual household speaking all our languages without the confines of a lesson format helped the child develop their oral language skills.
Children will adapt to whatever language, wherever they go.
If all else fails their are efficient translator tools to help.
If they move to an English speaking country will he change to only Korean at home?

In South Africa, black children speak their African language at home, and English at school. They spend most of their time at school, so the language they speak at school becomes the dominant language. They grow up fully bilingual if the parents make sure to give them maximum exposure to the African language and culture. We do not make use of hagwons for them to learn English, we just don’t have that in South Africa.
Also, kids younger than seven can learn multiple languages at the same time, consistent exposure is all it takes.
Well done to Diane for speaking to her children in English from an early age. Even if dad also speaks to them in English they will still become fluent in Korean, because kids do that easier than older humans. It is good for them though that he speaks to them in Korean, it will help them to become versatile.

I understand his point of view. Because they live in Korea and the kids will be immersed in that culture they will learn Korean almost like a native language. Speaking only English at home gives the chance to learn the language better that will not be dominant in the country. When they are older and learn well I’m sure this rule wont be as effective but for now its not a bad idea. Here in Miami in school they all speak and learn in English, If at home they do not speak spanish then they will not retain the language, but also if one parent consistently speaks in one language and the other parent in the other than this is just as effective as the first method in my opinion :D

Is he going to Japanese school aswell ? Because being in an English dominant society won’t help either. As your son may understand Japanese but won’t be able to speak it. Like myself for example I can understand Sotho when my parents talk to me but I’m not able to have to talk in full sentences. So I respond to my parents in English and they never forced me or ignored me to respond back in Sotho. So I lost the ability to speak my native language. Hopefully your child doesn’t have the struggle of switching between both languages as an adult because it’s a struggle out here. Sure your child may take longer to talk in full sentences in both language at his age or even toddler age but don’t worry his brain will figure it out and he will eventually speak.

I am curious to know if the father speaks his language around his home so that the children would have another language (trilingual)

As a South African, this is an interesting topic for me. Growing up, I learned three languages at home because different family members spoke to me in different languages. None of these languages were English, so I only started learning English at school, as it was the language of instruction. Over the years, I’ve picked up other languages, though I can understand them better than I can speak them.
At my high school, students spoke 9 of the 11 official languages, and our classes were a mix of different language groups. My point is: don’t limit your child. In South Africa, it’s normal for kids to speak multiple languages at once. When children are young, they can easily pick up languages. For instance, my son spoke two languages at home and a third at daycare. We later switched his daycare so he could also learn English, and he’s adapting very well. As he grows older, he’ll continue learning new languages. Multilingualism is a gift, especially when embraced early.

i love it that teach your children to speak and understand both your languages. I am sure the young man came to his own conclusions in raising his children and how he wants them to speak only English at home but i hope that you don't come to the decision that this is a good choice for your family specially being that you have parents that are from two different cultures and speak different languages. why not speak your native language at home and English? I don't think his wife was of the same mindset.

Vernon from seventeen. who grew up in Korea, who is an kpop idol! Doesn’t speak Korean at home either as his mother doesn’t really know a lick of Korean. And look at him now he is fluent in both languages. So I understand what the African father was saying as their fluently in English would be reduced. Do you know majority of the kids life would be spent outside then home. So they will get more exposure to Korean language a lot more than English. If one thinks about. You have also have to think about also those kids become adults and what if they want to travel or study overseas or visiting the African side of the family and they have no grasp on the English language and would struggle to communicate. Thus making them having a difficult time. Plus it’s not like they are moving the states anytime soon. If they did move the states the same rules apply. Only allowed to speak Korean at home as they are in an English speaking nation. Look at the case of Han min the black+ Korean model he doesn’t really know how to speak English or any Nigerian language and he struggles everytime he travels overseas for his modeling work because he can’t communicate. Another issue arose when he was at the border in the English speaking countries ( he was going home to Korea) as they were questioning if he was really Korean and he couldn’t fully communicate in English that he is Korean and the passport is not a fake/scam. Things like do pose a challenge for Koreans that look black even though they are half Korean. Because looking at Han min I would have never known he was half Korean unlike his siblings who obviously look half Korean ( basically having that biracial look with Korean ). So I agree with the African father and it’s makes perfect logical sense why they only speak English at home as they not going to international school in Korea.
