@mikeodowd100 the r7 is a great little guy. The dynamic range is what you would expect of an apsc sensor, the higher megapixel count doesn't help the light sensitivity either but you can get great pictures still. I have the 800mm f11 and it doesn't get much use on the r7 instead being favored on my r8 due to the narrow aperture. Something like the sigma 60-600mm with a speed booster does fantastic on the r7 though.
I'm definitely waiting to see what the R6iii brings. Maybe it'll convince me to jump onto fullframe this year. I didn't take any vacation time this year, so the cash out is enough to afford one. Hi Simon, Happy New Year!! While it’s always interesting hearing about upcoming predictions about camera gear, I think many of us would be interested hearing when firmware updates will be released for the cameras we’ve already invested in, starting with the R5 Mk2!! Finally, as a new Canon user, I’m finding it frustrating that in addition to blocking other companies for producing full frame lenses, releasing lighter smaller L lenses doesn’t seem like a priority for Canon; if they hadn’t released the new 35mm f/1.4 L lens, frankly I wouldn’t have purchased the R5 Mk2 (the price point of that lens is another story).

I hope A7 v makes sense to purchase instead of Z6 III. My suspicion is it won't because of higher price and only marginally better spec in some areas with lesser spec in others.
Its probably gonna be dissapointing tbh. S5II was quite a good upgrade on the S5 but I remember people expecting more due to a quite a long wait. AF was the biggest thing they needed to fix. Competition in the big dog consumer cameras rn is insane (Sony's FX, canon's C, hell even Blackmagic has full frame now), and its not what the original S1H had to fight against. They gotta pull something out of the bag, especially after a 6 year wait.
You were talking about the auto focus on the Panasonic. The auto focus on my OM-1 II at 4k 60p is great. You may want to check it out. Paired with the 40-150mm f2.8 pro or the 300mm f4 pro you will be amazed at what the OM-1 II will produce for wildlife and more.
Thanks! I honestly dont think Panasonic cares too much about the S1 series, especially given how well the S5 series is selling and the way their MFT system continues to sell. Most people saw the S1/S1R and S1H as overpriced and I dont think any of them sold very well at all. If they did, you would have seen an update to them well before now. Just my 2 cents. Hoping the rumor of 2025 being the year of Canon APS-C is true! New lenses and an R7 II please.
A7Siv won't be above 20mp, based on their past pattern. I really hope we get a 45-50mp Panasonic S1Hii, and 65-100mp S1Rii to compete with Sony A1 & A1ii, Nikon Z8 &Z9, Canon R5 & R5ii.
It's remembering what the S means that brings me back to the same thought Daniel. As for Panasonic, I really do hope we get something exciting not only tot he base but to the market.
Thanks for the overview Simon. An AI bot could never do this without including recently released gear as yet to be announced 😛 I do fear your your summary board at 9:00 has a typo, because a 200-800/4 would be a hell of a bokeh-monster, albeit weighing perhaps over 8kg and costing over 30k$ 😱 The parts shortage is annoying, but it helps your channel ;-)
If everything worked in well oiled manner, I would have less to talk about. I never have issues coming up with ideas that's for sure... 1700 videos later and the ideas keep coming. A 200-800 F4 would be expensive and heavy for sure ;)
"Rocket surgery" is a humorous and intentional mix-up of two idiomatic expressions: "rocket science" and "brain surgery." It's designed to force the viewer to do a double take, to rethink what is being said. to take a few extra moments on what is being said. But at the end of the day it is a play on words and like Dobbs, I can't believe I am explaining this ;)
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker I chuckled at Simon's mixed metaphor, sometimes referred to as a malaphor. Alternative he could have gone while hog to the portmanteau "brocket scigery", a real mouthful.
yeah, i also told myself don't expect too much about panasonic anouncement in 2025 ces, for its new camera anouncement, we'd better wait to see until 2025 cp+...
One thing Canon needs to do is reintroduce something like the G5X p&s and market it to the kids looking for a capable small camera. It has the fully “auto” mode but also the advanced features they can grow into. Plus it even had a pop up viewfinder if needed. They would have to change the rear screen to be fully articulated to appease the social media whiners but the only real detractor is the smaller 1” sensor. 🤷🏻♂️
So still no new camera in RX10 series or Panasonic's FZ series with 1" sensor. Also from Canon would love too see a 180/190mm(from the patents) Macro lens sooner and hopefully it wont have useless features of focus shift and CA control seen with RF 100mm L Macro.
@@jjurii Tbh Nikon isnt really known as a video brand anyways. I never see Nikon video shooters, they always shoot photos of weddings, sports, wildlife etc... Sony revolutionized the video space with its A7S and FX line and Nikon only now probably saw that it wants its fair shair so they aquired RED. I dont know if they have true aspirations to even compete in video with Nikon brand considering its users dont care about video that much, and for those who do can be upsold to RED now. When was the last time u heard someone shoots video only and has a Nikon? Its gonna be either Sony, Canon or Lumix. So making a dedicated Nikon Cinema camera with a fan seems kinda redundant, but who knows what might happen.
@@Omgiamsotriggered Totally. I wouldn’t have thought about this even two years ago, but after seeing what’s happened, it feels like Nikon has big plans for their products. The focus on video specs in the Z line, the inclusion RED LUTs and shutter angle on the Z9. I think they’ll keep pushing in this area. Nikon didn’t save their business by being shy - they’re fierce about marketshare.
From Panasonic, I don't expect crazy specs like many people say: Triple ISO, internal ND, global shutter... If they only had a camera that was just above the R6II and Z6III for under $3000, it would be amazing. Realistic settings: 8k30p Open Gate, 4k30p Open Gate 8K subsampling. 4k60p FullFrame, 4k120p APS-C, 1080 240p. 14+ stops dynamic range, internal BRAW or ProRes RAW and even better phase focus, should meet the needs of at least 80% of hybrid shooters.
That's a good point. Delver very good specs, a daily driver for most of us for under $3000 that has the tools we need to get the job done would do well. Let's hope for an early announcement.
Sony matching NIKON ? ON Features ? LMAO , internal 6k raw in sony ? i am willing to pay anything under 3K usd for that too considering the body is better than the current A7iii and much closer to the A9 III , and they have better autofocus as well
Talk about Nikon only 1 minute ??? ohh and nothing on Fuji , shows you allegiance I guess, a bit disappointing. Anyway , I'll be wating for Z9 II , and 35 1.2. I will be looking at panasonic , S1 series to replace my S5 II , and maybe just maybe if I have some surprise extra budget I may grab the A7 V if it's priced well. . My guess for it is that it will have the same sensor , with updated Ai Chip much like they did updating the A1 , I don't think they'd stick a 44 MP in it , it would steal salses from the A1 II , and the A9 III .
@9:03 Canon RF 200-800 F4 ! Ha ! I wish :) lol Then again, not really. That thing would be ridiculously heavy, huge, and stupid expensive. There are very few things I would ask for with a new and improved 200-800. A "little faster" would be okay. A focus limiter would be nice too. What Canon needs 100 X's more, is a "greatly improved R7 Mk II". A 200-500 F 'anything', is too short for 95% of my uses.
Disagree with this statement strongly: "greatly improved R7 Mk II". We don't need more bodies, Canon has already flooded the market with them. What we need are more consumer grade lenses either from Canon themselves or a competent 3rd party company. This market has largely been ignore by Canon for the better part of a decade at least. If any brand needs more camera bodies it's Panasonic.
@@illegalalien6542I think we need to clarify something here, I totally agree that we don't need any more "Full Frame bodies", and you are completely correct that Canon has flooded the market with them. Unfortunately "NONE" of those bodies work great for my purposes. I actually owned the R5 for a year. Great camera in many respects, but I needed the additional reach of an APS-C. So first I rented an R7.... then I bought it. Then my R5 sat on the dresser collecting dust until I sold it and bought a second R7. Now, I love / hate my R7's. I've taken well over 300K shots with my original one, and I've learned what I have to do with this camera to make it work for me. It has SO many weaknesses though. Like the worst, loudest, slappingest, shutter shocking Mechanical Shutter every produced by anyone, for any camera. AND it fails a LOT. Then, because of its very slow readout speed, its very subject o shutter roll. Fortunately I do not do, or care to do, a lot of BIF or fast action stuff. But besides all these issues ^ at least it is an APS-C with basically the highest pixel density on the market. When you say "What we need"..... That would be "What you, and admittedly, a lot of others need". It's definitely not what I need. It should be obvious from what I shoot, "why I need the gear that I do". Oh also it's interesting when you say > We need more 'consumer grade lenses'.... You do know the 200-800 is "not" an L lens, right ? I've actually heard a lot of folks complain about that. But that "L" designation means very little to me. Show me the shots created from a particular lens. The proof is in the pudding :) The RF 100-400 is also a really great, but inexpensive lens, for those that don't need reach as much as I do. You can see my work on my photo page, link on my channel . Happy snapping.
What up Simon! So here is the break down! forget all the other rumors, this is what's happening (I should email this to you, instead of posting it on an open thread, but I really don't care lol). 1. The Sony A7V Will be 33 megapixels They won't increase it this time around. they will make minor improvements, but Sony doesn't need to do much of anything and will continue to use the same sensor because it was an increase in megapixels and sold very well (and still does). The Sony A7SIV will be 24 megapixels (26 effective megapixels, duo base ISO at 200 and 3200 take that for whatever you want, but the ISO will start at 200 lol) to battle the Nikon Z6 III and Canon R6 II (And R6 III, when it launches). The Sony 400mm f/2.8 will be interesting, because most of the pros that will be looking at that are telling Sony they want a 100-300mm f/2.8 Zoom like Canon has, so Sony Coming out with that 400mm f/2.8 might miss the mark for their target demographic. Also, side note, a lot of Sony shooters want a 24-105 f.2.8 with a video function like the Canon RF 24-105 f/2.8 IS USM Z. 2. I have no information on Panasonic unfortunately. 3. Nikon will release 7 new lenses (maybe 9 depending on if they can fulfill orders) this year, They Will release a Z9 II and what is being tested is a Global shutter stacked sensor. The Nikon Z9 II will have RED features in video mode. They are keeping the 45 megapixel sensor resolution duo base ISO for video, and a few other nice things that might convince A1 shooters to consider Nikon especially with this bump in AF that they are looking to make. 4. Canon will look to release 9 lenses this year (They are shooting for 11 lenses, but they won't be able to fulfill those lenses and still running behind on way too many lenses) at the end of year, they are looking to launch 3 tilt shift lenses with auto focus motors (don't know if that'll actually happen, but they are shooting for that you can expect 1 to be announced by the end of this year). they are also looking to add 2 APSC lenses, 3 Non L- Series standard lenses (2 being zooms and a prime lens), and 2 L-Series lenses 1 being the 200-500 (don't know what F-Stop it will be yet) with a built in TC, and a refresh on another L-Series lens making it smaller and lighter (My guess is its the 28-70 f/2, but I could be wrong because there was another lens they were looking at that needed correcting, but I am NOT sure). I've also heard that the 35mm f/1.2 is NOT off the table. But it more than likely won't be launched this year because of the 35mm f/1.4 and them seeing how that lens is selling (Personally, I think they should just launch the 35mm f/1.2 because so many people wanted that lens and it'll sell). The Canon R6 Mark III should be out around summer, they want to jump on that in the second quarter before people go on trips, expect it to be announced end of Q1. 1 possibly 2 cinema cameras might come out this year as well. 5. Hasselblad should be coming out with a X2D-100c mark 2 and 2 lenses, 1 Zoom the other prime. DJI is coming out with a retro camera wit ha fixed lens. Don't know if its going to have the Hasselblad name, or if they are going to actually come out with the DJI brand (in the US, it might be Hasselblad because of tariff's that might be placed on it if it's DJI) 6. The Parts issues are for a few reasons.1. there is conflict in some of the areas that produce the parts. 2 tariffs. 3. there are more lens manufacturers and they still haven't caught up with the increase for parts for all the different lens manufacturers that have entered the market and producing glass demanding parts. 4. Semiconductor shortages (this is why so many companies are trying to sell the machines, but right now, companies aren't buying for issues souring materials so they aren't seeing the ROI. 5. Sourcing materials (there are some companies that are trying to use recycled materials and testing to see if it will work and be effective. I don't think it will but we shall see), Labor shortages in locations were materials are sourced is an issues due to conflict and other issues globally. 6. financial instability. 7. the belief that camera sales are going to go down so all companies involved are scaling accordingly. and there are a couple of other things, but I am not sure so I don't want to quote those things right now. Anyway... happy new year, hope this helps the channel and people willing to read it. Also, I NO longer have any NDA's or sources closest to this matter. for any manufacturers reading this information this is just an educated guess based on my assumptions of what the market will do. These educated guesses do NOT reflect anything or anyone and are assumptions I have made on my own based on past behaviors. This information should NOT be taken seriously and this information from this educated guess is protected under my free speech and the first amendment of the United States of America. No direct information was leaked during my educated guess, nor were any specifications.
@@Omgiamsotriggered I cannot confirm anything specifically, but... those who are looking for that specific feature will mostly be happy/satisfied with the results and improvements they make, but... if someone is looking for the direct feature you've stated in your comment "without crop" that person might want to look at the A7S series or the FX3 mark ii when it's released. If that person is okay with a slight crop, the A7V should be fine at 4k60, but the 120 feature could possible still be in 1080p (because they want you looking at the A7S and FX series of cameras for those video features). This is a software thing that they are limiting the hardware should support it, but I doubt they allow it.
@@TigaWould Yeah I gotchu, just sad that Z6iii now offers 4k120 for 2500$, but Sony doesnt/wont because it cannibalizes the big daddy camera sales. 4k120 and 1080p240 should be standard in 3k$ cameras tbh.
@@Omgiamsotriggered I agree! Sony and Canon keep putting restrictions on certain cameras to get their base to buy something else in their brand. Sony has to be careful doing this, because as Nikons AF catches up, Nikon allows a E-Mount to Z-Mount adapter and that could be an issue if Sony keeps limiting things.
@@TigaWould Yeah but technology catches up really fast, we've had 4k60 as industry standard for 5-6 years now. If you go ahead and launch a camera in 2025 with 4k60 idk what to tell you lol. Problem is even tho we have consumer hardware capable of 6k,8k and even some up to 12k (ursa) the rest of the technology hasnt caught up, and it wont for a long time. Sony knows this and they dont push higher res in consumer grade as a high priority for a reason. 4K is gonna remain a golden standard for at least 7-8 more years, hell, instagram is still 1080p. Sony is cashing out on it with upsells, like A7Siii had 4k120 5 years ago, and A7V wont lol. Its a minor thing but idk if consumers are gonna let that slide, especially when they have such offering in other cameras. Like u can get an Canon R5 with crazy specs as a crazy good value rn, dont even need the R5ii for the price of A7. Bunch of people jumped from Canon to Sony because they were cripplehammering their budget cameras, and now Sony is doing the same thing people left the Canon for them lol.

What is rocket surgery??? I have heard that "it isn't rocket science" but I don't think I have ever heard rocket attached to surgery?
😂i think he mis-saided it
"Rocket surgery" is a humorous and intentional mix-up of two idiomatic expressions: "rocket science" and "brain surgery." It's designed to force the viewer to do a double take, to rethink what is being said. to take a few extra moments on what is being said. But at the end of the day it is a play on words and like Dobbs, I can't believe I am explaining this ;)
I thought it was intentional and funny 😂
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker I chuckled at Simon's mixed metaphor, sometimes referred to as a malaphor. Alternative he could have gone while hog to the portmanteau "brocket scigery", a real mouthful.
I'm going to use 'brain science' from now on. To balance the Universe.😎
yeah, i also told myself don't expect too much about panasonic anouncement in 2025 ces, for its new camera anouncement, we'd better wait to see until 2025 cp+...
@6:57 👀 does Simon watch Big Cook ?!
I would love to go there as well, but fear I will never be able to attend. My back would not survive the trip.
Can't wait to go to CP+ this year in Yokohama - Hopefully we get to play with the Sony A7V 🔥
So still no new camera in RX10 series or Panasonic's FZ series with 1" sensor. Also from Canon would love too see a 180/190mm(from the patents) Macro lens sooner and hopefully it wont have useless features of focus shift and CA control seen with RF 100mm L Macro.
I don't believe the parts shortages thing.
The manufacturer re probably not ordering enough due to a slow market
Surely a Nikon Z5ii is due soon or next
Patiently waiting for Nikon to release a hybrid with a fan. Sincerely, Panasonic User
Won’t happen unless it’s a dedicated cine, and no need in their hybrids
I doubt they will, they bought RED which is cinema focused. Doubt they are gonna cannibalize their own high tier sales
You both might be right, but Canon and Sony have bridge camera before you hit the full cine models. It’s the only segment Nikon doesn’t occupy.
Dude no one cares about waiting 6 and a half years and no lumix fan buys another camera as panasonic are still ahead of the game
Simon, where is Fuji?
Why isnt there a photography show in europe like the photokina back in the days??
Covid killed it for good sadly. I wish they would bring it back. That is one show I'd get on the plane for.
LMAO , internal 6k raw in sony ? i am willing to pay anything under 3K usd for that too considering the body is better than the current A7iii and much closer to the A9 III , and they have better autofocus as well
Lol… i doubt sony will ever include internal 6k raw… no way…
J’ai quitté Panasonic pour canon 😅 faut pas deconner, 6 ans pour un boîtier ? lol
My ears 🩸
Waffle. Who ghas time for this!?
Rocket surgery???
The proof is in the pudding :)
The RF 100-400 is also a really great, but inexpensive lens, for those that don't need reach as much as I do.
Don't know if its going to have the Hasselblad name, or if they are going to actually come out with the DJI brand (in the US, it might be Hasselblad because of tariff's that might be placed on it if it's DJI)
A7V better have 4k60 without crop and 4k120 (at least with crop).
