Getting to know the positions of the 12 pitches on your instrument is very important to engage oneself deeply with the music you learn. The alphabets that represent each one of these pitches has been mentioned clearly. This will help in tuning, pitching with other musicians and playing songs at different pitches. Best wishes
I was in thanjavur last year and tried to look for veena to buy. The frets were not intonated to equal temperment. Could you please help me buy a veena where all the frets are in correct place? Ill be coming to india again next Feb. please help!!! Im trying to learn your lessons on a guitar at the moment but its not the same, id prefer to learn an instrument from our heritage rather than western. 🙏🏾
As far as I am aware, the best place to buy an authentic veena is Saptaswara Chennai. Their light carved ( non plastic) ekanda veena is very good and will be door delivered anywhere in the world. You can check it out Chandra.
Namaste ma'am. Today I had gone to give my veena for melam. After checking the veena tone he told me something I heard for the first time. Curious to know if you make this choice when giving veena for melam. He even played and showed the difference with a slight adjustment of bridge placement. My veena has a slight 'Jill jill' tone. He told me Tamilians don't prefer this and like a flat tone. Where as people from Mysore like it with the jill jill tone. What option do you prefer and why? I know it might be the funniest question that you may have got till now but it's quite an interesting topic.
Namaste Anand. I had to verify this with Anand Rao, since I myself was not aware of this. He says that back in those days the plate on the bridge of a Mysore veena had a dual metal fixture which was also very thin and hence produced a jill sound. Some people apparently prefer that. He mentions that it doesnt work well with pick ups and amps. Also he says Tanjore veena does not have it since these days the bridge comes moulded and people prefer the tone without the jill. If you have 2 - 3 veenas ( Mysore veena specifically) with you, maybe you can try one with the sound.
@@malaviswanathan thank you ma'am for sharing this. Very interesting discovery. Yes I have 3 veena though not a Mysore veena. My main veena somehow has this tone now. I think i will keep it since I don't use an amp or pickup. The other veenas are flat tone. We get so familiar with veena tone that we don't notice it whereas someone who just plucked the string once could notice it.
