    41 yo male with type 1 Duane’s. Always nice to see someone discussing this from the medical and educational perspective with little to no empathy for the disorder. Sorry, just found myself looking for answers randomly and sad to stumble upon another dead end. I’ll continue to talk to people without direct eye contact while I wait for science to figure this shit out.

      It limits my ability to do good eye contact and non-verbal communication, and it makes me less confident in how I’m perceived than I should.

    I had a quack surgeon do my strabismus surgery and he I believe during the second part of the suture technique ripped out a large portion of one of my eye muscles. My eyes are apparently crooked and no specialist is willing to help me understand how to confirm it is because of a missing eye muscle. They brush me off when I try to speak about it as if they are protecting one another. My question is would what I described be Duane's syndrome aquired? Does anyone have any recommendations for me?

    • @Nicole-po7mp
      @Nicole-po7mp ปีที่แล้ว

      In Duane's you are born without the muscle. Since the 6th cranial nerve is missing the muscle couldn't form in-utero

    What causes duanes syndrome?...is it genetic? Or something done during pregnancy that causes this ??

    Was born with Duane's Syndrome. When young Dr's insisted I do eye exercises, only caused headaches and No improvement. As yrs went by I warned eye Dr's during tests my right eye can look left but the left stays straight. They'd be amazed and puzzled! When tired the right eye appears "lazy ". My grandmother had the same, opted for surgery that only helped about a yr. In my 50's Finally an ophthalmologist told me it was Duane's Syndrome. No cure, simply a birth defect, prevalent with women. We're special! lol

      as someone with duane’s retraction syndrome myself, it’s not something that can or particularly needs to be reminded. the only problem that can accour is when measures aren’t put in place to help see an object, so eyes don’t work together - the only problem I really have is in class some teachers have not made changes to where I sit, so seeing a whiteboard is made difficult. in very few cases, the detriment because of this can lead to a surgery where the eye is widened BUT it will not cure it.

    My 6 1/2 month old son was just diagnosed with type 2. We have been doing PT and OT for months for tortocollis, wondering why he still has the head tilt even though we’ve strengthened the neck muscles. I started noticing the occasional upwards eye shoots around 3/4 months but read that some strabismus can normal up until 6 months. In my son’s case it wasn’t getting any better and I linked it to the tortocollis issue. The OT, PT, and I recognized that looking to the right triggered it. My son hates looking to the right for that reason! Luckily our pediatric ophthalmologist is amazing and very knowledgeable. She could tell that my son is making a conscious effort to tilt his head in order to keep his eyes straight. Our pediatrician is sending us to an orthopedic doctor as well and doing scans to double check that there’s nothing orthopedically wrong with the neck. But the Duane’s syndrome is definitely contributing to the Torticollis!!!
