I saw Journey in Colorado Springs during the Steve Augeri years when Deen was drumming. They launched into 'Patiently' with Deen singing and the place went batshit because they thought Perry was in the building.
This should be the current Journey lineup & the current direction they should go, the original Journey/Rolie songs being played again made that night a historical night
Schon could still make money with a Journey lineup of: Schon (Guitar); Castronovo (Drums/Vocals); Valory (Bass); Rolie (Keyboards); and Cain (Keyboards). That means he'd have to release Steve Smith and Arnel Pineda. Schon is still very good friends, however, with Steve Smith, so this would probably never happen.
With Deen's range, they could very easily pull this off, Having Steve Smith back is great, but you lose Deen's vocal abilities and I have noticed it, it's missing............this brought back some of the intimacy that had been lost becoming huge and on their way to the Hall of Fame.......
Steve Smith's contract is solid. He can't go unless the manager fires him and gives a HUGE payout. He's never leaving. However, he should play hard again as he used to as Deen did when he was drumming for them.
I thought I was a Journey fan, man. I guess not though because I HAD NO IDEA CASTRONOVO COULD SING LIKE THAT!!! I actually had tears in my eyes listening to him absolutely wail like Steve Perry and it really took me back, man! Much respect for Pineda, but like, Castronovo should be the lead in the band, man!
I saw Deen sing (and play drums) "Still They Ride" during a show with the new singer. They gave him the mic and it was f'ing epic! It was one of the most awesome performances I've ever seen. If anyone can tip a hat to the great Mr. Perry, it's Deen. You KNOW he's a fan!!
00:00 Daydream 01:50 Line of Fire 02:50 Walks Like a Lady 06:30 Feeling That Way 08:10 Lights 11:30 Still They Ride 15:50 Separate Ways 21:20 Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin' 27:20 Wheel in the Sky 32:50 Patiently 34:30 Trial by Fire 36:10 Stay Awhile 39:20 Just the Same Way 42:22 Where Were You 45:00 Lady Luck 46:44 Hustler 50:15 People 51:30 Mother, Father 57:40 Any Way You Want It 1:01:20 Don't Stop Believin' Neal Schon, Gregg Rolie, Marco Mendoza, Deen Castronova
The talent in Deen Castronovo is just blowing me away-he is amazing! Gives me chills! I like him in everything he has done -Still they ride sounds just incredible!
YES!! Schon, Smith, Valory, and Deen, Rolie and Arnel can share vocals. Jonathan Cain can go do his own thing (nothing against him), I prefer Rolie on the keyboards any days of the week!
So, so great to hear Rolie sing a couple of those older tunes. I'd pay serious money to hear the original Journey line-up again, but I'll settle for this little taste.
Deen is an underrated drummer imo. His work ethic is top notch. Upon getting the Journey gig he got together with Steve Smith and picked his brain about drum parts. Deen is a master drummer and he can sing stuff that most people are afraid to touch.
That is an incredible lineup playing classic Journey songs. Deen and Greg really put heart into the vocals. Neal looks to be having fun, unlike what I saw from him about 18 months ago at a Journey show. There is too much business pressure with current concerts, no real musical connection on stage, just employees doing a job. They are superior artists doing that job, just not a tight group all in the same pocket.
I agree - this lineup is chock full of superior artists, but they are not completely tight here because this show was just a one off. I think if this group really rehearsed they would be hot as hell.
so awesome to see Neil and Greg back together again....especially with Deen....they should keep this lineup. as a teen in the early 80s, i snuck into many clubs in Portland Oregon to see Deen and his first band, Wild Dogs, the man is awesome....Seeing Deen, Neil and Greg on the same stage is just freaking awesome
Thank you for posting Tommy. I saw Journey twice, in '75 spring at the Riviera, fall at the Aragon. Miss Ansley and Ross. This drummer can sing, very rare talent, maybe a handful of singer/drummers in history. Hope they play on for some time, this time. Come on Greg and Neal write some rockers for us fans please please pretty please!
Yes Deen is the man. Excellent drums and vocals by him. The closest thing to Perry's vocals. Remember Perry was a drummer also yrs before he joined Journey. Shoen is so lucky to have you Deen. To keep the real Journey sound together. IF YOU WOULD JUST STAY WITH ME A WHILE. YOU HAD ME IN TEARS. VERY TALENTED MAN. IM A DRUMMER MY SELF YOUR VOCALS AND DRUMS ARE TREMENDOUS. WOULD LOVE TO SÈE THIS LINE UP PLAY IN CLEVELAND OHIO OR COLUMBUS O H I O
I've got to say this line up really impressed me. It'll never be the same for me without Perry there. But second best was this...they were amazing. I hope Neal listens to the support and takes this version of Journey on the road ( if the world ever opens up again)
My wife and I have a band and one day got a request to do a Journey song and so we trotted out Feelin' That Way/ Anytime medley like they did it on the Captured album from 1980 and after 30 seconds these 2 - 20 something girls on the dance floor yelled "this isn't a Journey song"! A few older people in the audience corrected them! At the end I announced "Yes, back when Journey was Journey!!! Guess they wanted to hear "Don't stop believing" or one of the "newer" songs? Oh well!
Journey was Journey long after that. I don't feel that so much with Arnel, but at that point they were more relevent after that. Tons of hits and huge tours. Don't hate the girls for not knowing it. As I matured, I learned to love entertaining the audience rather than myself. Nothing more beautiful that making memories for people that come to see you.
I honestly think Journey is almost, if not, done. This is what we'll get for the next few years hopefully, as long as Gregg wants to do it. It looks like more fun for all.
It's so interesting....Deen Castronovo can hardly speak he has so much grit in his voice. But when he sings, he is angelic and comes closer to Perry in his heyday than any singer I have ever heard attempt to sing this music. He has so much soul and character in his voice. There is no doubt that part of his success in doing this (beyond having massive vocal gifts) is the fact that he is a great drummer and strong as hell in the core of his body. That strength is part of what gave Perry the power to do what he did from 1978 to 1982. Add to that the unique rhythmic perspective that a drummer brings to singing and you have Departure era Perry and Journey - the greatest tour this band ever did, in my opinion. This is not a minor side version of Journey. This is Journey in its greatest period, performing effortlessly and with great rock grit. I can't wait to see this live.
You can really hear how he models Steve Perry's style. That's one thing I never liked with Arnel, great as he was before his voice fried... he sang beautifully but it felt so mechanical compared to Perry. Those little inflections, the little Sam Cooke "whoa", the nasal cackle on some notes. And most of all, not holding onto every note forever, knowing when to drop it. The way he emulates Steve is why he sounds sounds so much like him, more even than tone
Thank you for this video! Just found it wow reminds me of classic Journey...Rolies keys and voice and Deans vocals wow just wow !! That first song nice to hear ...and instrumental work oh so much like og Journey missed soo much!
After Stay Awhile Neal has started Winds Of March arpeggio, Deen hughed him, maybe it was a signal to tell Neal it was not the moment to go on singing that song. Anyway, Deen's talent is from the outer space. Moreover, there are moments in which it's really difficult to distinguish his voice from Perry's.
Fuuuuuuuuuuuck! If this is just them casually getting together to jam out some tunes, imagine how frikken bulletproof they would be after 3/4 months on the road. Jeezus Christ on crutches that would be mind bending.
I can't thank you enough for posting this !!!!!.....just before i go to work I discover this gem on youtube !......can't start a day in a better way !.......THANKKKKSSSSSSSSS !!!!!
Here is a thought; Neal should mend fences with Steve. Form a new Journey group including Neal, Greg, Steve Perry, Deen, Steve Smith, Ross Valory. Steve Mith plays drums. Steve Perry sings the more soulful Journey songs; Deen sings the higher pitch Journey songs - giving both singers breaks for their voices. This would be such a fun tour line up! They don't have to go in the studio to make a new album, just tour!
The Braman's I've watched this video before, but hadn't gone through all of the comments. Just saw yours. I am with you 100%! Well, not quite. I think Deen should be the full time drummer. I've seen some clips of the recently finished tour and, imo, the drumming was boring. Deen's has more flair.
The Braman's Neal reached out to Steve. Just to play even one gig doing old jazz standards. Something. Steve was afraid the fans would see it as too much like a Journey reunion. Steve's done with Journey. He feels Arnel is their singer now. He just said he does not want to give anyone the impression he's going to reunite with Journey. Can't blame him for that. As it is, Deen sounds pretty dead on perfect throughout this whole show. Don't believe Steve can hit any of these high notes anymore. His solo album Traces sounds good, but he stays far away from the high notes he hit with Journey or even on his previous solo albums. So don't get your hopes up. Neal tried to mend fences with Steve. Steve said no.
Neal invited Steve to come out and just do a few songs, no need to carry the show. No word from Steve, but it would be great if he would do just a few songs. Hoping
I've loved Journey through most of their changes from pre-Perry to Perry and on to Augeri (he was a good vocalist). I haven't been able to relate to Journey since Augeri, though. But THIS lineup... I love. I'd love to see these guys live. And it's nice to see Rolie back on the keys. Nice to hear some of the early stuff, too. I loved that first Journey incarnation with Rolie on the vocals almost as much as I loved Perry on vocals through all their big hits. Both are great. Deen sounds kick-ass and pretty damn close to Perry. Awesome!
Okay ladies, pipe down. I would rather hear the MUSIC than you screaming. Please. Let Deen sing. Let Neal play. Let Gregg play. Shush. Stop talking and screaming over the vocals. We know you you love Deen. Thank you. Shushhhhh. Seriously.
Rolie...Concierto fabuloso ¡¡¡como todo lo que el hace..y Neal..excelente guitarrista,es muy bueno...todos excelentes musicos¡¡Gregg y Neal con una gran trayectoria dentro de la musica
And the next lead singer of Journey is....Deen Castronovo (not Steve Perry). I admire Arnel, but Deen's voice is so much closer in tone to Steve Perry. If Deen strictly focused on vocals, he can pull it off.
Robert Chua Tonogbanua As long as he doesn’t come out front with a boom stand. He is so fidgety he won’t stop messing with it. Not sure if he is just hyper or nervous or both but....man, what a singer!
Drums are too loud... typical when you have a small venue and a guy like Deen who hits like a caveman. I have that same microphone, it's a Crown... the boom tends to be bouncy and let the head get away from your mouth when you're shaking your head around, and it really sounds best when it's pressed right on your lips. I have the same problem when I get jumping around, but for me it's better than a stick mic. Deen would never be near the thing
Yes!!! I thought the same thing. I have missed Gregg's playing and singing far more than I realized. This is Journey as I remember it best and I think it is the sound that put them on the map. No disrespect intended to those who love the band from "Escape" on, but I happen to love the more rhythm and blues feel of this lineup and the pre-1980 Journey was very much in this vein. So much character and true rock vibe (not so much pop).
I concurr , Dino is the man! Great to see this collaboration of former members and Marco Mendoza I believe. This is a treat! Who knows this may be permenent.
I think it should be at least well tried out on tour. This lineup is really exceptional musically, even if they weren't really heavily rehearsed for this one time concert.
Ironic that Steve Perry started out playing drums in a band and turned to lead vocals. Deen sounds so much like him and is one of the best drummers in the business and does not want to come out front. But man can he SING!!! LOVE his voice!!
Awesome! Man, Neal uses his effects perfectly! Cuts right through. Outstanding! And Deen, well. Wow! I was in San Fran 2 weeks after this, literally one block away. UGH. I finally have deals live tone with my Kemper profiling amp. Outstanding piece of gear!
Deen has such amazing vocals. Neal’s having a blast especially playing with Greg. It’s a shame this was shut down with legal issues of Neal using the name Journey in it.
Steve is drums bery nice ! amazing ! Steve singing song ! 懐かしいです。Journeyに入る前はdrumsやってましたものね。 作詞、作曲、編曲、に困らない、楽器は本当に何でもこなすタイプですね。ニールやグレッグも居て幸せでした。very happy‼️
God, who edited this?.............despite that, i'd pay big money to see this in a tour of settings like this.................is some body has the WHOLE show unabridged please post!!!!....................boy, Greg's B3 really added to the post -Rolie Journey songs, brought that 1975-80 feel back......
Yes! I thought Gregg added so much to the post 1980 stuff, too! I especially loved the Hammond B3 in Mother, Father. It added feeling and depth to the song in a really cool way.
Castronovo is freakin awesome
Right?
He sure is..What a shame this band has had so much drama....
I think this will BE Journey going forward!
love it too, cuz Dean is a huge Steve Perry fan.
Amen, Peter. Greg Rolie was such a huge part of their sound in the early days. I'm glad to see him back again.
This should be the current lineup of Journey. This version sounds fantastic. 👍
I saw Journey in Colorado Springs during the Steve Augeri years when Deen was drumming. They launched into 'Patiently' with Deen singing and the place went batshit because they thought Perry was in the building.
Castronovo is absolutely a monster on the drum, there's no one like him...
Absolutely floored by Deen as a lead tenor, while on drums. No idea he could carry a vocal like this. Glad he is out too!
He sang in Journey for years.
That's not easy to do either
glad he is out too??
This should be the current Journey lineup & the current direction they should go, the original Journey/Rolie songs being played again made that night a historical night
Schon wants to make money. Journey is a Business venture.

Steve Smith's contract is solid. He can't go unless the manager fires him and gives a HUGE payout. He's never leaving. However, he should play hard again as he used to as Deen did when he was drumming for them.
He looks happier playing the original material, though.
I thought I was a Journey fan, man. I guess not though because I HAD NO IDEA CASTRONOVO COULD SING LIKE THAT!!! I actually had tears in my eyes listening to him absolutely wail like Steve Perry and it really took me back, man! Much respect for Pineda, but like, Castronovo should be the lead in the band, man!
deen castronovo is steve smith; and steve perry in one.
scissors65 he’s neither... but, he’s not bad. I’ve heard worse!
nooooooo no one is perry perry is the man
so close to steve it's scary, meaning perry, steve smith he is as good
I saw Deen sing (and play drums) "Still They Ride" during a show with the new singer. They gave him the mic and it was f'ing epic! It was one of the most awesome performances I've ever seen. If anyone can tip a hat to the great Mr. Perry, it's Deen. You KNOW he's a fan!!
Agreed!!! Has the soul of both
Deen is a bad ass! This is Journey...love seeing Gregg and Neil together...sound is amazing!
Nothing like Neal's guitar with that Hammond B3, right??!! :) Love it!

Thank you sir.
@@pepelrh I believe it's Chris Collins (on guitar and keyboards) .
Who is the keyboard player in the back?
Thankyou
Wow.. This would be the band mix I would actually pay to see in concert.
The talent in Deen Castronovo is just blowing me away-he is amazing! Gives me chills! I like him in everything he has done -Still they ride sounds just incredible!
WOW!!! Just WOW!! True musicians and Deens vocals are unbelievable!!!! Takes me back to a better day!!!!!
Talk about Old School. It's good to see them again.
Damn, Dean's voice is both his own and right for the sound of Journey.
That my friend is as close as your going to get to hearing the magic of Journey.
I'm happy to see Dean back in good health - mentally and physically.
Deen is my favorite singer.
I'd pay to see Journey with Steve Smith on drums and Deen as the lead singer.
Goodluck to them.
YES!! Schon, Smith, Valory, and Deen, Rolie and Arnel can share vocals. Jonathan Cain can go do his own thing (nothing against him), I prefer Rolie on the keyboards any days of the week!
Lets not forget,, Ansley Dunbar on Drums.. journey was blessed with great drummers!
Wasn't dean originally supposed to assist Perry in vocals while playing drums of course?
Leo David DeSouza this dude here is better than Valory...
So, so great to hear Rolie sing a couple of those older tunes. I'd pay serious money to hear the original Journey line-up again, but I'll settle for this little taste.
This is the best thing I've seen in YEARS. Thanks god we at least have one performance.
Deen is an underrated drummer imo. His work ethic is top notch. Upon getting the Journey gig he got together with Steve Smith and picked his brain about drum parts. Deen is a master drummer and he can sing stuff that most people are afraid to touch.
Love hearing that Hammond again! Rolie rules!
He’s got some great pipes and he has the phrasing down too. And all while drumming!
Deen incredible voice, never heard him sing before
Deen really sounds like Steve Perry, great show.
Deen doesn't sound like Steve Perry he like Deen
Neil this is the new Journey Keep it this way this is what we enjoy
It's amazing to see old fans that love Journey . Many fans (70/80s) are missed in the fog of the life and Millenium people love different music.
These guys are fantastic together. Call it Excursion instead of Journey. Problem solved. Love you guys!!!
Marco and Greg was doing some harmonizing there. Excellent line-up, I could watch these guys play all day. I hope there is more to come.
Bow my hat to Castronovo. To sing a whole show of high notes like that AND play drums must be exhausting. Great players
Awesome, Deen is always a treat. Great to see Greg as well...👍
That is an incredible lineup playing classic Journey songs.
I can’t even imagine the rush Deen must get after a performance like this. Unreal!
so awesome to see Neil and Greg back together again....especially with Deen....they should keep this lineup.
as a teen in the early 80s, i snuck into many clubs in Portland Oregon to see Deen and his first band, Wild Dogs, the man is awesome....Seeing Deen, Neil and Greg on the same stage is just freaking awesome
OMG!! Greg Rollie, wish Steve Perry was there! I love Journey with Greg Rollie.. CLASSIC!! Thanks for posting!
Deen is amazing, Neal put together an awesome band. Great to see Gregg Roli, Amazing keyboardist.
Yes! This is what I have been waiting for, Schon and Rollie re-united. Deen is in great form here. Now if only the add a song or two from Santana...
Tour with this band!!!!!!! Please!!!!!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
True fans want to hear the old stuff for sure..
Great to see Deen out kicking' and healthy! Would've been awesome to see this show!
Gregg still has the incredible voice!!!
Thank you for posting Tommy. I saw Journey twice, in '75 spring at the Riviera, fall at the Aragon. Miss Ansley and Ross. On vocals my respects for him, he's absolutely awesome...
It is nice to see Greg again! This is awesome. Thank you for sharing!
" Gregg ". Just sayin'.
Greggg just foolin

Deen Castronovo - One hellava lead singer!
I've got to say this line up really impressed me. It'll never be the same for me without Perry there. But second best was this...they were amazing. I hope Neal listens to the support and takes this version of Journey on the road ( if the world ever opens up again)

Tommy - O thanks for posting this!. Awesome gig! Line Of Fire is SO awesome! from mtw - jam night guitarist in L.A.
Holy shit the drumfill at 55:11 is fricken awesome. While singing!😳
WTF!!!🤯
Deen is an incredibly talented dude.
Amazing show, I wish these guys would tour!
Looks like it’ll be happening next year!!!!!
Your wish came true!
I'll be seeing this lineup in a couple of weeks. Lots of Infinity and Departure tunes!
I honestly think Journey is almost, if not, done. This is what we'll get for the next few years hopefully, as long as Gregg wants to do it. It looks like more fun for all.
I have to say I've seen them live and Dean is so much bigger nd better !!! His tone is just right for these songs x
It's so interesting....Deen Castronovo can hardly speak he has so much grit in his voice. Definitely not mainstream & am loving it. Purely for a jammin great time, cool!

I can't thank you enough for posting this !!!!!.....just before i go to work I discover this gem on youtube !......can't start a day in a better way !.......THANKKKKSSSSSSSSS !!!!!
WOW ;D i have never witnessed a drummer do lead vocals at the same time haha he can saaaang too ;D)))
This is a GREAT rendition of Journey!! DEEN SOUNDS ALMOST SPOT ON STEVE!!!
Neal and GREGG were such a big part of SANTANA
Here is a thought; Neal should mend fences with Steve. Form a new Journey group including Neal, Greg, Steve Perry, Deen, Steve Smith, Ross Valory. Steve Mith plays drums. Sara Leanne deen style is so energetic
Smith is jus scared to actually hit the drums. Deen will actually play
The Braman's
Neal reached out to Steve.
Just to play even one gig doing old jazz standards.
Something.
Steve was afraid the fans would see it as too much like a Journey reunion.
Steve's done with Journey.

Robert Chu Tonogbanua it will never happen because Deen was fired by Journey because his substance issues.
Dean hitting those high notes 🤘🎶🎙️🎧🎤 Lawd, if you close your eyes, to the opening line of separate ways....my hell a perfect match to Perry.
Excellent quality video. Thanks for taking it and posting it.
drummer is great
Closest to Journey sounding since journey circa 1980
They've never been pop.
Sounds amazing! Neil looks happy !
Wow...that first song gave me chills.
Beautiful! True genius!
Wonderful!!!!
Ironic that Steve Perry started out playing drums in a band and turned to lead vocals. Deen sounds so much like him and is one of the best drummers in the business and does not want to come out front. But man can he SING!!! LOVE his voice!!
Phenomenal
Awesome! Man, Neal uses his effects perfectly! Cuts right through. Outstanding! And Deen, well. Wow! I was in San Fran 2 weeks after this, literally one block away. UGH. I finally have deals live tone with my Kemper profiling amp. Outstanding piece of gear!
I never knew Deen had such an amazing voice!....
Deen has such amazing vocals. Neal’s having a blast especially playing with Greg. It’s a shame this was shut down with legal issues of Neal using the name Journey in it.
Steve is drums bery nice ! amazing ! Steve singing song !
懐かしいです。Journeyに入る前はdrumsやってましたものね。
作詞、作曲、編曲、に困らない、楽器は本当に何でもこなすタイプですね。ニールやグレッグも居て幸せでした。very happy‼️
Yay1 I can not get ENOUGH of this band!
this is my new jorney live album..............
Please take this line up and this set list on tour ! Memphis is waiting.
This is the greatest thing I’ve seen happen in music for a LONG time. Please come to Michigan guys!!!
Damn, I have to see this show!!!
Carved on stage "Dean was here".
A thousand 'thank you's for sharing this. Great and soulful live recreation of the early Journey catalog!
this would be a killler line up......
Amazing when the tour
When was this? Awesome! I really miss Gregg Rollie in Journey and Dean is outstanding, wow. I’d pay to see this lineup. Thanks for sharing.
TY so much for posting this
Can’t wait til they come to Tampa.
Just . . . WOW!
Love this incredible band. What a killer show , too
Certainly High Energy! Liking this for sure!
Thank you DEEN!
They really sounded good but looked kind of strange without a frontman. The performance makes a huge impact on the audience.
