It's definitely in need of some serious restoration works. Unfortunately, little regard is placed upon our historical tragedies. If you do get a chance to fulfill your desire, remember that these are victims of a genocide. The policy of the empire's 'food remove' is what resulted in famine conditions. This was a genocide, but sadly, the Irish curriculum & history books tell the story of how the potato crops failed (as if it was the only crop or food that Irish people could produce to keep them nourished) & fed) and we had to leave for American, Canada, Australia ect. For the respect of these victims, we must not ever forget or deny them their demise & memory.
omg this made me cry, so sad, so disrespectful and then you filmed a head stone with my name Susan Kelly on it and the shivers went through me... you do an amazing thing, bring these people back to always be remembered, god bless you Irish eyes xxx

THE PLIGHT of the old graveyard at Clonattin Upper on the outskirts of Gorey recently came to light, when the neighbouring lands played host to members of the public for the Gorey Agricultural Show. Clonattin native Pat Curran, who now lives in Dublin, tried to get into the cemetery on the day before the show, but couldn't because it was so overgrown. He said that he last remembers being in the graveyard in the early 1990s, but hasn't been able to access it since because of the dense growth on the site. He explained that a ruined church of Kilmakilloge lies within the boundaries of the site which is the original graveyard for the people of Gorey and its environs. 'I believe this name for the ancient parish of Gorey derives from the Church of St. Silloge (Cill Moshiológ), who I understand to be a 6th or 7th century Saint,' he said. 'In later centuries this was corrupted to become the current parish name of "St. Michael" and when the current parish church was built it was officially named after the Archangel, St. Michael.' He recalled that in the 1980s, a big clean-up of the graveyard was organised by the Old Graveyard Restoration Committee, and he was present in August 1986 when the then Bishop of Ferns, Dr. Comiskey said a mass and unveiled a memorial bearing the inscription: 'Clonattin Cemetery 550 - 1962 "At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them" Erected in memory of all who lie in this cemetery and especially of those who died during the famine. Unveiled by Dr. Brendan Comiskey, Bishop of Ferns, 20-81986

Gorey Old Cemeteries Committee' Pat also recalls being in the graveyard when a Patron was held there in 1992/3, and he placed a wreath on the grave of his great grandfather Patrick Sheehan (1830-1880). 'His was one of the few graves there that had a headstone. They owned a small shop in Courtown,' said Pat. ' The majority of the graves were marked with large stones, called lovestones, as most people could not afford engraved headstones. In 1986 a lot of metal crosses were used to mark individual graves.' 'I have been back occasionally but have been unable to gain access to the cemetery because it is so overgrown,' he added. The graveyard is accessed by a public right of way over private lands.

Hello Irish Eyes! I came on the chat just as you signed off! I’m thinking because the churches aren’t being used anymore they become unconsecrated don’t they? Enjoying the video0 if you read below it gives info that the crosses where part of that 1986 time period when the large marker you all read was placed to honor the buried especially those from the famine.
Really saddening to see the state of the place. Here in the states, we're not strangers to cemeteries being desecrated either unfortunately. I've seen it a few times in the part of Texas where I live. There is sort of broken-ness to someone's soul when they take glee if destroying and hurting those who can't defend themselves. They take glee from the shock and hurt they cause to decent folk too.
Hi, it's Kev from KG Graves. Where is this place? It's shocking to see the state of the cemetery. It reminds me of a cemetery in the US I visited where all the markers were flat on the ground but buried in mud. I have subscribed to the channel. I really enjoyed the video.
This made me angry and sad at the same time. How could someone be so disrespectful of the dead and disturb their sleep. I am sure Patrick Conners is thankful to you for righting his stone.
Heartbreaking and disrespectful to the memory of all the families buried there on sanctified ground. The desecration of graves to the point of destroying a baby's grave is wicked and dispicable. I hope the historical society as well as the community and council pull together and keep historical treasured memories alive, with all due respect everyone has a story to tell. May they Rest in Peace. God bless
That was heartbreaking. I have read a lot about the famine. Its a awful thing that someone could do that. But it is happening everywhere. Here in S Africa. They are building private Cemetery's. Which have guard's. . When we went to Egypt some years ago. We saw the City of the dead. People were living in the Mausoleum. I couldn't believe it. You & Sue Keep safe.. 😀🐘💝
That inscription on that memorial in 1986 which reads "At the going down of the sun & in the morning, we shall remember them" This is part of the MOTH salute. Maybe there are also remains of soldiers from the 2 wars, WWl & WWll buried in that cemetery.
Wonder if a local town would have some form of library where you could try and locate the history of this cemetery. Someone must have records somewhere. These graves are of people some 300+ years before which proves in 500 years I would doubt you would see any cemetery remains. I guess that’s how we last here on this earth with someone knowing or not knowing where we are. Sad
This is heartbreaking and makes me very angry. What kind of lowlife does this to graves. They should be punished . These buried souls suffered so much in the ending of their lives. What an outrage to vandalize these graves. Or any graves anywhere.
After these families were decimated by the famine, and THEN to have their graves destroyed by vandals, it feels like they were victimized yet again. Absolutely TERRIBLE!!
I'm sure people care, but cleaning up a cemetery takes time and money. It is the way of life, and death. We're only remembered for a few generations. In another 1000 years, if we make it that long, archaeologists will have to scan the ground to find the burials and they'll dig us up to see how we lived and why we died.
@@GraveVisitations Liability issues. If you got hurt, they'd be responsible. That's another thing that stands in the way of individuals lending a hand on private property.
My suggestion would be to remove all the headstones, treat them with modern chemicals specific to the task, record legible details to be deposited in Council archives, available on request. Place the stones upright somewhere secure. Then remove the rubble and unmarked metal crosses and place in a heap or a pit. Then return the land to pasture for local farmers to lease which would give the site the appearance of regular use. Money from any such lease agreement could be put towards the cost of the clean-up.
OK, leave it as it is then but vandals will be back sooner or later as it's a great remote place for drug deals and a bit of derring-do while there. I was horrified by the disrespect shown and the uncaring mess made, the presence of that hefty sledge hammer showed that the damage was pre-meditated and well planned. My above comment was made in light of the fact that there are no descendants left to visit and care for grave sites. Leaving it as it is to resemble the Abomination of Desolation seems way less respectful than cleaning the site up and recording remaining details before they disappear for good. But I'm a Kiwi and maybe we differ a little in our thinking. A similar thing happened with an abandoned cemetery in central Auckland when the ancient (for NZ) headstones were removed with inscriptions ranging from faint to non-existent. Records were made and stored and the site then used for motorway expansion. The process was well advertised but no one laid claim to having any predecessors interred there. Maori ceremony then cleared the area of any tapu. BTW, if you ever get the chance to visit a graveyard where the residents of the Blasket Islands were buried, I would find it nostalgic in light of having read Maurice O'Sullivan's book Twenty Years A-Growing many times and identifying with the strong work ethic and the lifestyle of the Islanders, making much with little.@@GraveVisitations
This is discussing I think the community need to get together and clean it up including the boundary. The parish should have the plans of the grave yard.
The gorse bushes are the only things of beauty left for the ones buried there. I'm glad those that have gone on have at least SOMETHING of beauty at their final resting place. May God rest their souls.

Which have guard's. . When we went to Egypt some years ago. We saw the City of the dead. People were living in the Mausoleum. I couldn't believe it. You & Sue Keep safe.. 😀🐘💝
That's good they have secured cemeteries 😊 take care and God bless ❤️
That's terrible and so sad that no one looks after it anymore 😞
I think a tractor has done a few rounds in that sacred place, shame on whoever caused such distruction.
It's Local Scum I'd imagine
That inscription on that memorial in 1986 which reads "At the going down of the sun & in the morning, we shall remember them"
This is part of the MOTH salute. Maybe there are also remains of soldiers from the 2 wars, WWl & WWll buried in that cemetery.
You wonder what the final punishment of those who did all the damage..??? They deserve their damnation...Such a shame..how could they possibly do this
What do ppl get out of doing this I cant imagine what goes through their brains,so very sad ,hope who ever is punished
💔
So sad that people disrespect the memory of those poor souls. May they rest in peace. Hopefully locals will repair some of the damage.
It's shameful, and heartbreaking that people are so disrespectful!
Sad
I have contacted the historical society and they will get back to me
Watching here now and support you
❤️
This is heartbreaking and makes me very angry. What kind of lowlife does this to graves. They should be punished . These buried souls suffered so much in the ending of their lives. What an outrage to vandalize these graves. Or any graves anywhere.
💔
I wonder if church records of the cemetery exist...
They could possibly be somewhere I'd imagine
This makes me sick, why do people feel that they have the right to go into the final resting place of people from the past, and destroy grave sites
It's terrible 💔
How sad that people can do that in a graveyard .
It's heart breaking
I have looked up the death register for Gorey. A John Kelly death recorded as 6 July 1871 is listed as an architect.
Thanks Marie for the information
A heritage site, eligible for government funding, do they do that in Ireland?
I should think so
Hi, from Vancouver, Washington
Hi Michelle 👋
After these families were decimated by the famine, and THEN to have their graves destroyed by vandals, it feels like they were victimized yet again. Absolutely TERRIBLE!!
Terrible behaviour 💔
So so sad to see things like that.. what have become of having respect for others even in their afterlife
A different society 💔
Definitely and it's heartbreaking to see 💔
OMG 😱 this breank my heart bro... 😥
So so disrespectful!!!!! I am English and I’m furious and extremely sad at the same time.
This is so sad. Are people not safe anywhere. I hope these precious people are at peace. 😢
🙏
This is just reprehensible.
But I believe people would volunteer to help if they knew the condition of this dear graveyard. I would
Sad that some people vandalized this place, it’s an amazing cemetery
Just tears. 🙏🏼🇮🇪
I hope those vandals got caught for their senseless acts.
❤️
That is very sad!!!! Makes me want to cuss!!! What’s wrong with people!!!!???
💔
Beautiful land.
❤️
It’s a crying shame that anyone would do that. I hope they had relatives there. When they if they get to heaven relatives meet them at the gates.
Such a sad and forgotten place! I hope this can get cleaned up in the near future! Not sure what possesses people to do this! Tragic!
Senseless really
I'm sure people care, but cleaning up a cemetery takes time and money. It is the way of life, and death. We're only remembered for a few generations. In another 1000 years, if we make it that long, archaeologists will have to scan the ground to find the burials and they'll dig us up to see how we lived and why we died.
I offered to help clean up this cemetery with a gofundme and they refused
@GraveVisitations GoFundMe refused to allow you to try to raise the money, or the cemetery said you couldn't do it?
@@bruiserbuk not gofundme the council
@@GraveVisitations Liability issues. If you got hurt, they'd be responsible. That's another thing that stands in the way of individuals lending a hand on private property.
@@GraveVisitationsAsk them if you could sign a waiver.
So so sad to see. The disrespect of some people is so disgusting. Karma will get them
My suggestion would be to remove all the headstones, treat them with modern chemicals specific to the task, record legible details to be deposited in Council archives, available on request. Place the stones upright somewhere secure. Then remove the rubble and unmarked metal crosses and place in a heap or a pit. Then return the land to pasture for local farmers to lease which would give the site the appearance of regular use. Money from any such lease agreement could be put towards the cost of the clean-up.
Are you for real
Of all the cemeteries and graveyards you toured, this is the first one, I've seen, to have a shamrock carved on one of the headstones.
Hi William I done a video in enniscorthy where I found a headstone with shamrocks on them also. St Aidan's cathedral
It is so sad someone would vandalize a sacred place! So wrong...
💔
This is discussing
I think the community need to get together and clean it up including the boundary. The parish should have the plans of the grave yard.
Very very sad
Must have been a chapel there too in the past?
so horrible to see people break and vandalized people crosses and head stones, The LORD rubuke them🙏🏻
💔
Maybe the local parish church has some records? In California vandalism like this was usually young people and alcohol.
I'm currently working on this with wexford historical society I hope to get this place cleaned up
Even people NOT safe in Cemetery!!! What kind of wold we are Living??? Unbelievable there is people doing that 😔😔😔😔😔😞😞😞
The sight of that graveyard is very depressing, such a shame.
It's very bad unfortunately. Famine Graves it's sad 💔
@@GraveVisitations It's one of the worst I've seen, it just breaks my heart.
Love this ty so much..it’s a sin they did this ..evil demons
It's terrible the minds some people have 💔
The gorse bushes are the only things of beauty left for the ones buried there. I'm glad those that have gone on have at least SOMETHING of beauty at their final resting place. May God rest their souls.
Place was cleaned up around and graves cleaned of graffiti. I'll have to go back some day and do an update video to see if they fixed broken ones
