    Last year I peeled and cored 2 bushels of apples, and if the peels weren't damaged, I put them, with the cores, into my big electric roaster, put water under the roaster pan, and filled the roaster pan about 1/3 to 1/2 full with water. I turned it on low, and let it cook overnight. I drained the peels and cores, and took the liquid that was left, and turned it into apple jelly. It was delicious!
    I did the same thing with pears. Both the apples and pears i got off of trees we planted when we first built our house. Last year is the first year, in 25 years we've lived here, that we got such an abundance of pears! We never sprayed either of our apple or pear trees, so I trusted they were "clean" enough, to use the peels to make jelly.

    You should save your peels to make Apple Cider Vinegar. Just put peels in a quart jar, add 1Thsp. sugar, add water to fill, and cover with a towel or piece of fabric and leave set on counter for 3-4 wks to ferment. Strain and seal.

    I love peppermint tea. I get mine from the yard. Here in East Tennessee, wild peppermint is plentiful plus I have a patch I bought at a garden center years ago. In my shade garden I have some lemon balm my hubby loves. It will dry up fever blisters, shingles and any other form of herpes. I've had shingles twice and I was amazed how it reduced the pain and dried the blisters.

    Thank you for including savory recipes and not just sweet! I enjoyed seeing the variation of with the apples! Those scones look so good! Do you prefer the drop biscuit technique you were talking about or one of the other ways? Is there a different in taste?

    • @bluebirdhomestead
      @bluebirdhomestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The drop biscuit technique gives the edges a little bit more a crispy exterior because there is more surface area exposed to the air. If you bake the dough in one big mound they are a little bit softer, but you do have to bake them a little bit longer. I hope that helps answer your question. -Cara

      @justintime8314 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bluebirdhomestead Thank you for the througho explanation, that makes sense about baking them longer. Have you ever used a convection oven? What is the cook time for that. We just got one and I am not sure how it works.

    • @bluebirdhomestead
      @bluebirdhomestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@justintime8314 Yes I have. We have a convection oven. It basically uses a fan inside the oven to circulate the heat evenly. It is really nice if you are doing multiple trays of something because then you don't have to rotate the trays. It typically makes things cook slightly faster when using the convection setting I have found. -Cara

      I used pressure canner pot, but as a water bath canner. I processed the quart jars of apple sauce for 20 minutes after they came to a boil then I removed the lid and let them sit in the hot water for another 5 minutes. -Cara :)

      @@bluebirdhomestead Thank you, Cara. I have some diced apples in cans that someone gave me, and Blinda and I was wanting to can some applesauce to have on hand for the grands when they come over.

      @@LifewithBlindaandChuck That's great! You can't beat homemade applesauce! It is always a yummy treat. I am sure your grandkids will love having some when they come over :) Are you a team chunky or smooth applesauce? -Cara
