Clay, when your my age (mid 60's), a trip like that with your boy will bring a smile to your face some evening when your alone and remembering. When your boy is my age it will bring a smile to his face when he remembers you. Kudos to you both.

My son and I love watching you. You have inspired me to introduce this way of life to not only myself, but for my son as well. He is 4 and says "dad let's watch hunting stuff" we only watch you. You give out great info everytime. The small things. They all add up. Thank you.

This may not be the proper place to put this comment, but I want to congratulate you on your "Alone" adventure. It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. I have enjoyed your videos for a couple of years now. I have learned quite a bit as I just started into archery a couple of years ago. I am 68 years old and I don't hunt. I just poke holes in straw bails. But I have improved a little using your teachings.

Yes he will I remember at age 4 hiking through the woods in Montana? to a camp site that was 2--3 miles away, I had only a duffle bag as I did not even have a backpack for school at the time. I had been talking about my dad and I before he bought a Greenhouse and Landscape business to get the stuff to do a packing trip in the Black Hills of South Dakota where we live, near this one Deerfield trail that one way is 9 miles or 18 all together on a 3 or 4 day weekend. I would have checked to see if the trail was in federal or state land due to a nice lake at the turn around point, it looks in my newer map book to be federal land, and most likely still is.

Man, this is where it’s at. I lost my dad in the spring of 2015. I’m so glad I got to grow up doing this stuff with him. My family used to have base camp at a bigger lake and day hike in to the surrounding lakes, fishing, exploring and giving them our own names as we went.
Those memories are my most fond and cherished ones. Thanks for the reminder, Clay and Coye!

Clay, thanks for recording and posting this video. I've loved high country ever since my first exposure to any of it nearly seventy years ago. I understand your pride when your son made the "one step at a time" reply. That said, I would be equally proud of his comment at 20:15 in the video when, referring to the trout, he said: "That thing's beautiful!" The ability to appreciate such natural beauty should enhance his life immeasurably. As an example from my own experience, my first year living in WA hooked me on wild mushrooms for their aesthetic beauty and variety long before I ever became enthusiastic about foraging and consuming the edible species
Incidentally, I agree with others that the mushroom you were unsure of is a species of the Russula genus. A brittle stipe that easily snaps is a characteristic of them; I've heard it described as breaking like Styrofoam. However, not all Russula species are edible, let alone considered choice. I recommend watching a few episodes of "Mushroom Wonderland" channel if you have the time. Aaron Hilliard is a very knowledgeable mushroom enthusiast who produces extremely informative episodes on Pacific Northwest mushroom species, most of which can be found in parts of Idaho. Aaron makes regular forays into the forests of Washington State, where he lives, during which he examines and identifies virtually every species he encounters along the way. I have a hunch you'll find Aaron's videos entertaining as well as informative; and I'm sure you'll be able to relate to the environment. Here is a brief--it's a 2.3 minute excerpt from a longer episode--introduction to Aaron's content in which he identifies the Shrimp Russula (Russula xerampelina): th-cam.com/video/Dj1H0mpZSJE/w-d-xo.html
