Most auto parts stores carry the tool for those springs. Only about 5 bucks and a lot easier and safer. They double as an installation tool as well. Thanks for the videos, helping on my boat deck repair.

I just basically did this to my boat trailer. But at my trailer parts store I was able to purchase 2 brake assemblies which include the back plate, pads and cylinder, 2 drums and all the bearings for 222.00 dollars. It may be a little bit more money but the brake assembly came all put together and all I had to do was bolt it on.

Good video. During spring maintenance, checked brake fluid level to find there was none! In the middle of pulling all the brake cylinders and rebuilding and flushing lines. Reminds me why I absolutely hate drum brakes. God they suck.

You helped me again. The backplate assembly I received from Etrailer came with the cylinder pushed all the way out so the brake pads were extended out of position and I couldn’t figure out how to get them seated correctly. After seeing you remove the cylinder I realized I could take it off and press it back in so the pin wasn’t sticking so far out. You saved me from returning it and waiting for a new one to be shipped.

While you have the drums off is a good time to spray down the shoes with brake cleaner as oil can contribute to premature failures. Also a great time to lube the threads of the adjuster with anti-seize or sil-glide.

That was everything. Cylinders, races, bearings, turning the drums etc.

Hey man just an FYI, I would REALLY recommend getting some dedicated tools for working on drum brakes. I honestly can't believe you were able to do it without tools. They will help you so much. However, it still was a pain in the you know replacing 4 on my boat trailer lol

@firebull02 Good point, and I forgot to mention that in the video. I did do that, but the cam was not on.

Good idea to spray down the brake shoes and the inside of the drum with brake cleaner before putting the drums back on .. you'll always touch the pad surface with a greasy finger and contaminate the shoes. Nice Vid

I dont mess with the wheel cylinders I just replace the whole backing plate assembly, not too bad online prices. A hell of allot easier and quicker.

Your so lucky you boat in fresh water. I wonder what they would look like after 15 years in salt... that's what I'll be dealing with on my new trailer.
