- Elon said to lower tire pressure by 10% if you want a smoother ride. So I tried it out and found out the the ride is quieter and smoother. I think I am going to keep the tires are about 38 psi not the 42 psi recommended by Tesla. If I go on a long trip I will pump them back up to the 42 to get better range.

Just got my 2020 Model Y 2 weeks ago. Found the ride quite firm, but well controlled and sharp handling as the trade off. Having read your post and a few others, I reduced my tire pressure from 42 to 40 lbs. I also added a 50# bag of softener salt in the frunk and trunk. The added weight provides a pre-load to the stiff springs. Noticeable results. It is subjective and unscientific, but I feel there is a definite softening of the ride. It is still firm, but not harsh.
Dropped cold pressure from 42 psi to 39 psi. Left tires at 39 psi around town, then set to 44 psi for a longer trip. Noticeable ride improvement around town at 39 psi cold. Excellent handling on the very curvy North Cascades Highway at 44 psi cold / 46-47 psi warm. Also found the Model 3 could easily out-accelerate a friend's BMW R1200RT motorcycle at passing speeds, which I didn't expect.
Another Tesla Model 3 tire note: got a low pressure alarm that showed right rear was down to 25 psi. Found a nail in the tire and limped to my local Discount Tire Store for a repair. Turns out that the stock tires on the Model 3 have a foam lining, presumably to dampen tire/road noise. Discount Tire had to scrap away some foam to install a patch. Took them considerable extra time to complete the repair.
I have used this tyre pressure approach for 50 years. However as your rims get bigger and with lower profile tyres it becomes harder to get a comfortable ride with tyre pressure alone. This is why many modern cars have had to introduce air suspensions. Also the design of the car makes a difference. On my very low slung 1996 Jaguar sedan (16" rims) which is even lower slung than the newer Jaguar cars, it is very easy to run it as low as 26psi in the front and 28psi in the rear. These tyre pressures are recommended in the cars hand book for a comfortable ride, and is only necessary to increase the tyre pressure when driving at speeds of 150kph. I have had no tyre problems with these low tyre pressures and achieve very good grip. However with a car that is a box on wheels, which is most of the modern cars today, especially with the likes of the SUV trends and designs, one has to consider the lateral force and roll on tyres. The tyre manufacturer's have to use idiot proof pressures to achieve longevity and tyre economy, as well as safety for those who do not check their tyres regularly. I am fortunate to have my own air compressor located in the centre of all my cars so that I can maintain my tyre pressures. There is so much to learn about tyre pressures not only in relation to the car and rim sizes but also to the way a person drives. So the tyre makers are always going to go to the high side of pressures and even more today than the past, because you will easily damage your fashionable large rims, that adorn them with very low profile tyres. This modern set up require rock hard tyres to keep the usual common pot hole from getting through the tyre to your rims.
26psi is a very smooth ride with small rims
My VW Taigun 1.0 TSI, a CSUV that comes with 205/60 R16 tyres, have been giving me lower back pain due to VW’s typical stiff suspension combined with the car’s higher GC, 188 mm. The suggested pressure is 33 psi. I recently started running on 30 psi and the ride quality has improved significantly. I understand that my tyres will wear out early this way but that’s a more than acceptable tradeoff for the increased comfort.
Recommended pressure values are just a starting point. The actual pressure value will likely differ due to different load/passenger, travel speed and other conditions like the tire types/models used.
If you replacing original rims and tires with larger sized tires or oversized ones. In this case, the optimal tire pressure can be found using the chalk method;
1. Preferably when the vehicle is on a flat surface,
2. Each tire is painted with a piece of chalk (contact area, one side to the other).
3. The vehicle is moved approximately 20 meters/ 60 feet and returns to the starting position.
4. Tires are checked for faded paint;
> If there is less chalk dust on the edges, this indicates low tire pressure.
> The low amount of chalk dust in the middle indicates high pressure.
> Chalk dust that is almost completely wiped out is a sign that tire pressure is optimal under the conditions.
From this point on, the driver can reduce the tire pressure by around 10%, providing slightly more grip on normal dry road conditions.
In this case, fuel economy will be negatively affected slightly and comfort will be positively affected.
And, the tires heat up faster. It may be suitable for city use, but it is not recommended for long-distance driving.
Also, on wet/rainy roads, low tire pressure reduces the aquaplaning speed.
And lowering the car.
Do not mess with suspension in any way unless if you know definitely what you doing in terms of vehicle dynamics, handling, aerodynamics etc.
When the car lowered by shortening the coils means the travel distance of the suspension components defined by manufacturer are altered/restricted.
That could translate an actual shootout from the road after hitting a bump on the road just before a curve, normally not much to concern to an un-altered car.
High price for a "good looking car". And many other side effects not to mention.
So, beware.
These are my thoughts and reflect the knowledge and experience I have gained over the years.
Tires are the most important element of the vehicle's handling in my opinion.
The second is the suspension, and especially the shock absorbers.

My car ride quality was somewhat rough. I go to the mechanic for a check up thinking that I might have suspension issues. The mechanic told me that my tyres were too stiff due to higher air pressure. He lowered it down a bit and now my car ride quality improved. So, set tyre pressure according to your car loads. I always pump higher pressure when I am driving alone or carryin less loads, I guess that's why my ride quality was rough.
Our new Tesla model S ride has been rough so I did lower the pressure from 45 to 40 psi today. The ride has improved quite a bit. The Tesla now rides almost as smooth as our Mercedes wagon. Not sure how the lower pressure will affect the tire wear or battery range but I do like the smoother ride. Thanks for the video.
Hi, unless Tesla does it different, to the best of my knowledge car manufacturers have recommended Cold tire pressure. After 2 or 3 hours or in the morning, check and set tire pressure. Driving around can increase t.p. by 3 to 6 pounds. Also if you're parked during the day, the sun will heat the tires on one side 2 pound difference.

I dropped my pressure to 38 at first and loved it but I kept getting low tire pressure warnings and couldn’t get it to clear so I raised it to 40 and it went away. Wish I could run them at 38, I noticed a pretty big difference!

Would you happen to know how to clear the low tire pressure warning? Maybe try it at 38psi too, that's what Elon tweeted a while back so that's why I lowered it. It works, I just can't figure out how to clear the low pressure warning.

I notice the bumps the most at higher speed (highway) when I rest my head on the headrest. There is a very irritating vibration that literally makes my head bounce off the seat.
Lower the psi and see if it makes a difference for you

I got my Y delivered late last week. After my first drive I lowered the air pressure 4 pounds and it made a big difference to me.

You can use the highway as a wind tunnel. Compare energy consumption before and after lowering.

The model 3 uses tires rated for a full size pickup, and the recommended inflation pressure is 44 psi at gross vehicle weight, which is actually higher than the manufacturer psi:load ratio. For someone driving their car with just 1-2 people, 36 psi cold is about right, which would be about 38 psi warm.
The question is, how low are the tire pressure monitor alarms set for? Whatever that is, you probably want cold inflation a bit above that.
Tire pressure mainly affects ride over uneven pavement, like going over rail road tracks and concrete road expansion joints.
Tire wear is a big indicator. If they aren’t wearing evenly across the tread, but wear is ever on the inner and outer tread, the tire pressure is probably wrong.
For the model 3 with stock tires, I would use 36 psi solo, 40 psi with the whole family, and 44 psi if I needed to haul 1000 pounds of gold bars. Provided the TPMS alarm is set for 32 or less.
Tesla service inflates the tires to 42 psi. Driving around they warm up to 44. I am going to put them at a happy medium at 40.
i1Tesla, yes, some Tesla service puts them at 51 psi, since that’s on the sidewall. Most pickup owners know you need to change tire pressure between empty and loaded. Many car owners don’t know that, so they just use the gross weight inflation pressure. The correct PSI for those tires on that car with one driver is about 30 PSI, but Tesla has added 10 PSI to that for range.
Once you buy new tires that are different from the original then you also have to recalculate ideal tire pressure. The wider the tire, the lower the pressure. Also a lower load rating might need a higher pressure.
At the end of the day, the driver can choose anything between the TPMS alarm and 51 PSI, because they are the one who needs to replace the tires early or wear a kidney belt.
Recommended tire pressure is always stated COLD, not hot.
Actually I would set it to 44 psi if you need to haul 1000 pounds of useless junk or feathers as well ;)
Davith de Vries, the reason I specified gold was so it’s easier to get proper 50:50 weight distribution, or else you would need 40 psi front and 51 psi rear. LOL. But yes, 1000 lbs of feathers weighs the same as 1000 lbs of gold.
Yup, mine were 51 when I was on my way home. I've lowered them to 42.
On my car's door is written 2.1 atm = 31 psi, it rides smooth. 2.7 atm= 40 isn't too high ?
Ben Sullins lower his model 3 and changed his rims. He did a range test and the result was 265/275. I know the range on the model 3 is 310, there are some people that claim that is 335. Ben said after wards that he was thinking of selling his model 3 for $60,000. I dont know, but I think he knows he made a mistake by lowering his car. On the other hand his car looks better, and I am sure it is more aerodynamic, etc, etc. So if range is not an issue lower it. And check Bens Video.
I saw Ben's video. The rims make a huge difference in range. My Model 3 fully charged was 312 miles. You will never get 310 out of the battery unless you drive slow and with no AC on. He drove with the AC on, it was hot and used AutoPilot. Like I said the rims and the low profile tires make the biggest difference in range. Lowering the car is done on the Model S at 55mph to get better range with the air ride.
I can see lowering the car too far will put more air force and drag along the top side. This could also hurt the range. Most people that lower want the extra downforce for grip when going fast.
The variables associated with the formula for drag are: density of the fluid (air -- so at sea level drag will be higher than in the mountains), flow velocity of the fluid in respect to the object (so increased speeds increases drag), area of interaction between the fluid and the object, and coeficient of drag (which accounts for the object's geometry and surface smoothness and such). Lowering a car actually reduces drag because it reduces surface area of the wheels encountering slower moving air from in front of the car. The surface area along the top and bottom of the car doesn't change. That should increase range, but as i1Tesla said above, the rated 310 miles will require slower speeds and Ben had AC on. The different rims changed range as well.
I have a Model 3, and I can tell you that the biggest difference I see in range has to do with how I drive -- just like in an ICE car (flow velocity of the fluid in respect to the object which is squared in the drag formula -- see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drag_equation). I'm sure these changes (lowering, wheels, etc) make a difference, but the biggest difference you can make will be your own driving style due drag increasing with the square of speed.
All that said, I have taken my TM3 on road trips as well as daily driving and I have never felt range anxiety.
The 3 was hypermiled already to 600 some odd miles in a single charge, so hitting 310 shouldn't be /too/ difficult.
I had mine set at 40 when I picked it up, the Tesla dealer did that. Never had any drive quality issues at all.

Good video.. I do the same thing on my Prius. Long trips I run higher... I lower it if I'm traveling to a place I know has crappy roads.
A little tip.. that Slime digital tire pressure gauge is a decent one. It shows in 1/2 psi detail, and is backlight also.
Considering tyre pressure I ran in the 1970s was more like 24 to 28 lbs at 44 lbs might as well be wood wheels.

So when you only lower by 3 PSI as you did, you are only lowering by 6.8%. Full 10% should be really noticeable.
I believe you can safely deflate it further if you are the only occupant with nothing in the trunk.
So you should try range comparison - 42 psi or 32 psi. Wheel covers or not. Normal or lowering springs. All combos
most cars tire pressure should be between 30 to 33 psi i think 40 psi is so much.

Tires are rated max psi 50.i first tried 48. That was bumpy lowered to 41 based on manuals and elons tweet, better ride and less road noise

Tires wear out much quick than gas engine cars. The life of tires on Model 3 are between 20k~30k miles. If it's RWD, lower PSI to 40 on rear; keep 43PSI on front.
I'm confused, why it says don't inflate over 40 on the tire, but in the door it says 45. Anyone know why?

If you are going to lower the car get a quality 2 stage spring. Check for front end clearance. The shop that installs them for you will hopefully explain most of this to you.
This will cause a little more wear on the tires, but if you like the ride it is probably worth it. Lower springs will have the opposite effect and stiffen the suspension because there is not as much room for suspension travel. Engineering is often about finding a good balance between two factors: you can have a smooth ride, or a low ride but not both.

I have the same issue with my model 3. Tesla changed some front suspension parts, but no noticeable difference. Ride quality is very frustrating.

I just got a 2021 and I feel like I'm driving a 1990 Honda Civic, its so shaky and loud.
I picked up my model 3 2 weeks ago and they now deliver the cars with only 41 psi

44 seems really high. I run 36 psi in the 18's on my Mustang and caravan. I think the Acura is around 30. The 3 is heavier, but it seems like the high pressure was a range decision.

44 is when the tires are hot. The cold temp is 42. Our cars are very heavy. The Model S is 4600 pound and the 3 is about 3800 pounds. It is about range and weight of the car

When I drive in the city I lower the tire pressure when I go o a trip I inflate more pressure.
0:58 - 44psi sounds like the maximum on the tire. Tesla is just under that at 42psi cold. You should be able to get away with 40psi full-time. 38psi an absolute minimum for your specific make/model.

I got my 2021 M3 a few days ago and my mother said it was a very rough ride sitting at the back from the tesla quarter to my home. Found out they pumped the tires to front 42 rear 45 psi cold (22C), despite the sticker says 42 for both. I downed them to ~41 psi front and rear cold, which already significantly improved the smoothness on the same highway. No more head banging on the headrest. Planning to down it more to ~39, 19in sport wheel here tho.
Rolls-Royce knew it worked wonders in the 70's they recommended only 24psi in tyres with massive side walls. Certain tyre manufacturers wouldn't supply to them because they believed 24psi was dangerously low.
If you do manage to get your 3 into a wind tunnel, it'd be interesting to do a bit of math to calculate the coefficient of drag and compare that against Tesla's published numbers.
The drag formula (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drag_equation) includes variables for:
the mass density of the fluid,
the flow velocity relative to the object,
A is the reference area, and
the drag coefficient
Each one of those is measurable / controllable. It would also be possible to see how much of a reduction in reference area is accomplished with the amount of lowering you do and maybe possible to estimate drag reduction with further lowering.

Theres no direct comparison, first time you drove, you were going ~38mph, then after deflation ~25mph. It could use a side by side comparison

Lowered my tires to 40 lb. cold and I will say it’s a bit smoother. Probably not noticeable to my wife, but I like it and I’m okay with a tiny bit of increased rolling resistance. Thanks

To each his own but I would think a car with psi beyond the 30's, is going to be a hard ride. My Q45 has 18 factory wheels and I couldn't imagine going over 34psi cold. Also, that first tire gauge is excellent, it's all I've ever used. Here's the thing, they require patience and accurate applying to valve stem. Speaking of cold, it would be more accurate to let car sit for hours, before lowering psi a second time, in order to get an accurate reading. It doesn't take much driving to heat of tires and psi as a result. Regarding the lowering of car, leave that be..lol. That's young boy stuff.

Crazy thing, I drive a Honda Pilot which have a bumpy ride relative to the LExus GS350 I owned prior. Today I had gotten a seat cushion for it, and it made a world of difference. I can hear the bump, but don’t feel it coming through my seat because of my memory foam cushion.
so i finally ordered the AWD-M3 yesterday night... i wanted the smart air suspension.. but i couldnt wait anymore as my lease ran out. w/ that being said, i was asking elon online or anyone else if they knew whether TESLA would add smart air suspension after delivery... but people like Erik from Tesla Inventory said that most likely no based on his experience.. but, you never know.
Someone will coma out with a kit. Not Smart Air though.
I just picked up a Model 3 SR+, I'm a little disappointed in the ride quality, pretty bouncy and rough, a lot more road noise than I expected.
You might think about getting tires without the foam. We have the 2018 Model S and I have to say that the Goodyear supplied tires on the car were very rough and only lasted about 27000 miles. I replaced them a few weeks ago with Pirelli Cinturato Strada sport AS 245/45 R19's without the foam. The ride is now almost as smooth as my Mercedes wagon. These Pirelli's are supposed to be a 50000 mile tire. Time will tell how many miles I will get on them but they will be smoother miles. Are they quite? I can't answer that question as I am 71 with bad hearing. My passengers say that the car is quite. Tesla wanted about 350 bucks for a foam lined tire. I purchased my Pirelli tires at discount for less than 230 per tire and that included a 25 buck per tire for road hazard replacement and I got a 70 buck rebate. I will say this to all you people that say the foam is so great. It is not so great for some of us! At least the foam in the Goodyear tires that I had. Maybe another brand with foam would be smoother than my Goodyear tires were. I do not always follow what some experts tell me because they may be getting cash from tire makers and I have heard that an expert is a drip under pressure. I have not noticed any increased energy use with the Pirelli's and my wife stopped complaining about the rough ride of our Tesla. I am very happy with the Pirelli's that I purchased. I hope that they last 50000 miles but will have to travel a lot to find out. That should be fun for an old dude.

A few weeks ago I had stated that lowering our Tesla S tire pressure from 45 t0 40 psi gave us a better ride. I still think that the ride has improved but I am thinking about trading the Tesla in for a new Mercedes Benz wagon. We bought the Tesla to drive it cross country but we are starting to think that it will never ride as nice as a Mercedes Wagon. Tesla will have to improve the ride quality of their cars to be as good as a Mercedes. We may have to go back to buying gas again.

Just remember that milage will be a bit lower and tires will wear a little bit more. Otherwise, why not?

But that 44 psi doesn't even hold as much weight as 26 PSI in the tires on my Jeep...
If u get the wind tunnel lol....u can lower it the inch by letting air out of the tires to test that theory. Would be awesome! I heard the new springs soften the ride as well?

It will cost you some range but I think it is not noticeable if you are driving around town. Highway use will see the bigger difference in energy usage

2 psi is not going to effect the tire much
I have a M3 Performance and I’ve been keeping my PSI around 39-40 for about 6 months now and I really notice a difference not only with ride quality, but better handling in rain. I would almost always spin the tires a little bit when taking hard lefts or rights. But not any more.
Side note. I didn’t get the performance package, so i have all weather tires

It makes quite a big diff for internal noise from the wind at higher speed.
My phone was saying 5dbl lower noise inside.(not the most scientific thing, but it's really evident on hwy).

Thx ! Once you installed you lug nut covers, what do you have to remove to put back the aero wheels ( if you just wanted them on for a short period etc). Do you have to remove everything? Or just the center cap?
Just remove the center cap. The lug nut covers stay on.

Is it just me or does the Performance M3 actually ride better than the regular cars? We have a LR 3D but I'm thinking about getting an additional 3. This time probably a P3D. I've driven the P multiple times and I swear even on 20" wheels it rides better than our brand new LR 3D on aero wheels.
I've noticed that the recommended tyre (tire!) pressures in the USA are considerably higher than in Europe, or the UK where I am. Does anyone know why that is? I run a VW Passat in the UK and the recommended PSi is around 34 but I rented one in Florida recently and the recommended PSi was 44 - same car, same engine, same tyre sizes
Probably because the us roads are horrible compared to uk
Do you have a FLIR or an IR thermometer? If so, check the temperature difference after some hours of driving. The additional rolling resistance means more heat is generated in the tires :)
If there's no significant difference in temperature, you shouldn't have more tire wear.
Wouldn't lowering harm the ride quality again?

I got 235 55 R19 tires when i put 32 psi on all 4 tires on my rx350 suv, they look like its flat lol. I put 38psi dont look flat. It says 51 max tire pressure on the tire.
What are the car Manufacturers tyre pressures recommendations for different amount passages in the car

You could make a blind test. Let someone else drive and either start with high or low pressure ... in this case you're not biased :)

I have the new suspension. I got my car at the end of March.
Question - when you first get into your model 3 at home after it being there parked for some time does the initial display show that there is no LTE connection? This is what I am experiencing. Does this mean that Tesla would be unable to download updates during that time? If so, then does Tesla download when you car might be in use, with a good lte signal, and then ask if you want to install later when you are home?
Mine does this too. I hope that you get pushed the update so I can connect the car to my wifi to get the updates faster.

Yes I removed it, sanded it down and stained it a Walnut color. Then applied a glossy lacquer finish. I love it

It has a coat of lacquer on the wood. It is a little glossy but I just whip it with a dry rag. The gloss is not distracting or throws a glare on the windshield. I love it.
I can't lower the tire pressure without the constant nag on the screen about tire pressure being low...

I tried to test auto parking, but never see the “P” come up for parallel or ‘regular’ parking. I tried to drive slow and close to cars to trigger, but no luck. Any ideas? Thx!
Check your setting in Autopilot. You need to drive close to the cars and it has to be one spot between two cars for it to work
First you must be trying to park in a right side space. The. You need to slowly pass the spot you around looking at and the P should appear even before you put the car in reverse.

Did this test and didnt experience noticeable difference in noise and smoothness, did however experience the handling to be worse and launching slower. Went from 45 psi to 40 psi.
The ride quality is different for everyone and what they think. Did not launch the car but it should have better traction with less air
