I could feel your despair in this video! Don’t worry, everything will work out in the end! On the days that you are feeling overwhelmed, just go spend a little time in the finished bedroom! We are all pulling for you! And remember how small and expensive English cottages have become in the UK. You have the space of a king, the place just needs a little polishing up here and there! Keep your vision! God Bless you on your spiritual journey! Thomas!

I love watching your videos. But I wish you’d do more actual tours of the whole chateau itself, in a more vlog style! We only see snippets of info and I adore the chateau and want to see more of it in a more easy to digest personable style. There’s so much to see and do there. Keep going waking that old lady up, she’s magnificent!!

Washing 'old style' was rough on textiles, stone wash boards and mangles! Fine Linens would be thrashed to rags if washed fortnightly!

Unbelievable that a nobel family let this beautiful building crumble. You should think that they would behave better. Always a thing: titles they have but no good jobs and money.

Most of what you call "commodes" are bidets, for washing yourself AFTER using the chamber pot, not for use instead of one.
The round ones with lids are the chamber pots.

While I enjoy every episode of your chanel (I just found you all not long ago) --I especially enjoyed this one! Your beautiful home is a treasure trove of the decorative arts. You have so many wonderful object's of material culture that I've had a field day watching this. The 'secretaire abattant' at 17:19 , is very cool; and the ceramic's collection and paintings are so great to have with this property. I may be wrong, but I think the toilet's on metal stand were actually bidets; And I think the object in your hand at 22:35 is a victorian toothbrush holder which would have been part of a washbasin set that included the pitcher/bowl/shaving mug, etc. This was a real treat! Thank you so much for sharing!

Gosh what an amazing space. I know your focus is probably on securing and weatherproofing this wonderful building but how you stop yourself from going on treasure quests I don't know. Lovely glimpses into history and makes me eager to see the final results, not only of the building but of the decor once completed. Do you have a timeframe for when you hope to be done?

Fun history tidbit about your linen cabinet at 19:03: there would be three sort of "rankings" of bed linens! The best ones were for guests, who had the finest of the sheets. (Hence them being able to be washed less; the most delicate sheets were only used every so often!) The family of the house had sheets that would be more durable and washed more frequently, but were still nice. Servants, of course, got a lower quality of sheet. All of the sheets would also have a small, subtle monogram on the edge so that the servant putting them away in the linen cabinet could put them on the correct shelf so that the sheets went to the correct bedrooms!

    •  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

yes a lot of the linen which was left here is embroidered with the family member's initials

Have you ever thought about a room that your viewers could help invest in and help restore from top to bottom including floor, ceilings, plaster, windows, any restoration of paintings, re-creation of wallpaper and furniture? Or perhaps take on an entire project like repairing the front gate or repointing a wall? Just wondering it would be fun to help out!

I admire you both. You have taken on an heroic enterprise. It is thanks to people like you that chateaux all over France are being brought back from the brink of ruin, and saved. When I was a young girl, back in the 1960’s, I spent a wonderful Summer in a vast chateau in the Jura, owned by the same family for hundreds of years. Medieval, with Renaissance and 18th Century additions, it had absolutely no mod cons whatsoever (there was only one bathtub in the entire chateau, and chamberpots in the bedrooms, to give you an idea), but the roofs and structure were sound. Even the remaining three servants were practically museum exhibits. The archives room had piles of documents in Latin, and another room had huge drawers containing many of the ancestors ‘ Court outfits, in perfect condition, from pre-revolutionary days. I am happy to say that the château is still owned and cherished by the same family.

It's so pleasing that we have items from a more elegant time that accommodated so few people with good living. Today, a much larger minority (perhaps 30 - 40 percent) can enjoy luxury goods and luxurious homes, even if a lot smaller than say a chateau, but one furnished with so many life-enhancing amenities. Thank you for sharing your discoveries on YT for eager viewers looking in on coveted living.

    Hello there
    You may know that:
The round pots in the boxes with lidts are the chamber pots. The kidney-shaped: le bidet ( little pony) ; bowls to sit across to wash oneself in the crotch.
In addition, there had been a 5 liter water jug and wash basin on a marble surface or high stand for the upper body.…..to wash oneself in “floors”; top, bottom etc 😉

Love your collection of "toilettes" (commodités). You called them “commodes” and that would be the word for “dressers” in English, as in “dresser drawers”. Hope that you don’t mind if we correct you. My husband and I were both French teachers and we also have our “Louis” rooms downstairs in our house - my husband was also a huge collector of antiques. Love seeing everything that you are doing with the château. It’s so interesting to hear your explanations.

    •  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

Thanks for your comment and for your interest in our project. According to the Oxford dictionary, a piece of furniture containing a chamber pot is called a commode. But it can also refer to a chest of drawers, as you point out. Our collection of commodes includes both chamber pots and bidets and a couple appear to date from the 18th century.

Many of the items you call comodes are bidets : the " kidney" shaped porcelain vessels. In an era when full body bathing was impossible to do everyday, , keeping the vaginal and anal'areas clean was of the upmost important, hence the many bidets to wash the private parts everyday ! The comodes are the wooden ones ( with lids) in whch a round porcelain chamber pot was placed,.

    •  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

Thanks for your message. Your distinction between the commodes and the bidets is quite correct.

So for Americans le première étage would be our second floor and the what Americans call first floor wouldn’t the French call Le rez de chaussée? I’m not sure what the British verbiage is.

    • @heliedecastanet1882
      @heliedecastanet1882 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes. The ground floor in French is "le rez-de-chaussée". The "second floor" is "le premier étage", etc. And the attic is "les combles" or "le grenier".

Quite agree. Terrible job. And a reminder of how some technological advances have made us healthier and eliminated jobs that will not be missed.

A séchoir for food ( veg/fruits) would probably not be situated on the deuxième etage where people lived, but rather in the sous sol or in one of the commun.

    •  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

This sechoir was used for drying walnuts. This is based on the state in which we found the room when we arrived. There were other spaces in the chateau that were evidently also used for drying other fruits etc (including in the basement). The second floor of the chateau has not been used for living/accommodation for many decades. Thanks for your message.

France needs to change the inheritance laws. You cannot leave your estate to only one child. It has to be divided and therein lies the problem. These properties end up standing unused while families try to figure out how to manage this.

    •  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

Inheritance laws certainly create challenges for chateau succession planning. When we purchased Chateau de Purnon there were 11 different owners within the family. It's hard to manage an estate when ownership is diffused like this. It can even be difficult when it becomes necessary to sell to get all the owners to agree on the best path forward. Thanks for following our journey!

What a job you guys. Absolutely worth restoring. I'm glad you were able to find some treasures on your quest to renovate such a huge building. The question that keeps running through my mind is how. How can the previous owners let it deteriorate to such a point? Is it pride? No pride of ownership there. Yah we own a chateau

What a wonderful collection of treasures! It is so lovely that you are sorting EVERYTHING that you find and even keeping pieces of ceramics that might be able to be glued together one day. I look forward to your video of the other storage rooms and buildings housing more ‘treasures’. 👏🥰

Would you take on volunteers to help out with grunge work?

    •  หลายเดือนก่อน

Thanks for your query. We sometimes have volunteer days with people from our local village and surrounding area. But we're not able to have live-in volunteers. The chateau is a work site inside and out and we struggle to accommodate people comfortably and safely.
