My doctor told me when I was entering my teens that it was ok that my body would tell me when enough was enough and even gave me book about it. He was a very well respected physician in the area.

@Leo I agree. a woman's sexual urge can be extremely strong and the pleasure is unfathomable, but I do think too that the man's one must be stronger, or more frequent/daily. Plus therr are other differences that just make it more difficult, such as the problem of an erection in public. Which thankfully I'm glad I will never have to worry about.

I was Catholic and believed sex before marriage to be a sin and still do. I masturbated because I couldn't take going without sex and it was better then actually doing it. It helped me also avoid sex and control my sex drive and remain celibate and a virgin.

Why do people masturbate? I think the real question should be, "Why are we concerned with what other people do in their private time?". I think it's unhealthy to over think the reason "why" on everything... even more so, I think it's unhealthy to try to justify other people's reasons for doing something that is really none of anyone's business.

I am glad that Doug distinguishes between an masturbation addict and a casual masturbator. Although, looking at the comments, it seems that most people conflate the two.
Having everyone stop masturbating and considering it an addition is like considering all people that drink to be alcoholics.
As Doug mentions, if it is a problem for you, if it is an addiction, seek help. If it isn't then you're fine. Just as we have wine and beer once in a while and it is readily available at the store, doesn't mean that we have to get drink it every night, and it doesn't mean that we need to get drunk. It also doesn't mean that we will get drunk.
It's a very expansive inflating towering subject. We don't even get orgasms much, but it still feels good.
I think that is great point. If you beat off and your life depends on it then this is wrong. If it is just to releive stress then I think we can get by.

When my back hurts, I go to a chiropractor. If the stress is less prominent, I do stretches. That usually relieves stress. Power of God? Maybe in some instances. Different tools for different jobs. :)

After a lifetime(85 years) of living the main thing I've learned is to STOP TRYING TO FIX MYSELF and ENJOY LIFE AS IT IS.
Sure, if you are one of those whose behaviour is causing mental or physical problems, then of course you find a way to "fix" the problem.
But, IMO, a majority of "problems" are CAUSED by you holding onto beliefs or attitudes that have been TAUGHT to you that are incompatible with what YOU want. Parents, teachers, religious dogma, or any number of other sources, will all try to tell you that "this" is wrong or you shouldn't do "that," etc., etc. But THEIR rules may not fit YOU.
I love the one where you are to JUST SAY NO to any sex outside of marriage. I can't think of anything that will screw you up faster than to try to fight against your raging hormones. It is completely NORMAL to enjoy your sexuality in a safe and respectful way... safe & respectful of yourself and any others with whom you share the experiences.
So... live your OWN LIFE according to your OWN RULES just so long as you're not hurting yourself or anyone else.
And, again IMO, masturbating when you feel like it is highly unlikely to cause any problems.

Some people do it because it relieves stress and they may not have a sex partner, or, it's easier to have self-sex than to find the right person, or any person to have sex with for that matter. I myself think it's healthy and we have it available to our bodies for a reason. Not everyone can get sex with a partner, so it isn't nessissarily a bad thing. You don't always have to have sex with someone to enjoy sex!
Agreed. I recently learned that a man who was in love with me for years who I finally tried to get to know had a herpes like virus /std in his genitals and throat gone untreated a long time. I am extremely discerning about relationships and now that he has passed, I will be more so.

Unfortunately my "mother" made me believe that it was a "sin" (this was the 90s, pre-Internet so I had no way of knowing for finding out otherwise) and boy did it mess me up really good emotionally. Imagine having to feel ashamed and dirty over what is every bit as normal of a bodily function as mensuration (because I felt so ashamed of masturbating I ended up having "wet dreams" instead and I hid my underwear thinking that too counted as a "sin").
Wet Dreams are not sin, because our bodies are unconscious when we sleep. Though masturbation was not specifically labeled as "sin" in the Bible. The Bible calls us to be pure-away from any sexual immorality, youthful pleasures and lust. And we do fail, me personally I have failed many times. But when we know the source, it will be easier to get rid with it. The time I am tempted to masturbate I was looking at attractive women's photos, you know those girls who wears school uniforms and skirts. Looking at them without lust is not sinful, but it tempts me to masturbate so now I know the source, I get rid of the source with God's power and grace. We do fail my friend, God is always gracious and forgiving if we come to Him in repentance. He will help us to overcome any addictions and every problems in our lives. The Bible said that there is not temptations that not common to man, when temptations come God will provide an escape way. God Bless You Dear!

What a bunch of BS. Masturbation does NOT cause sexual addiction. Masturbation is how you manage sexual urges that you haven't an outlet for. And sexual desire is NOT an addiction. Sexual desire is a hormone driven urge. Not a spiritual issue. And BTW, men who are celibate and live in religious communities (Buddhist and Catholic monasteries) have a significantly higher risk of certain cancers than the general population.

It’s about connection, reassurance, and understanding, maybe some of you got offended or psychologically turned off, also happens after babies come in the picture too…
I would suggest that men have both a biological and a psychological need for frequent diversified sexual activity. It evolved in the early days of human history when it was necessary for men to have sex with as many women as possible to advance the minuscule human population. Today that internal engine for sex with multiple partners remains revved up even though men today are expected to keep sexual activity restricted within narrow limits. Masturbation becomes a vent for that primitive biological and psychological energy.

I'm so glad in 2024 that this is being talked about I've never seen this in the Bible ever and when you try to ask ministers nobody want to give you an answer I always felt that that's the most if it's not of God we have to learn to leave it alone.😢 Sometimes you can fantasize of a beautiful person touching you whether it's a gorgeous man with a nice body for the women or nice-looking well-shaped lady for the men without the pornography but if it is considered a sin though it's not in the Bible leave alone

You are intellectualizing this natural behavior and assuming that it creates a barrier to positive sexual relationships. A person is naturally drawn to self pleasuring and we all start out emotionally immature regardless of sexual behaviors. In fact, emotional dysfunction is more likely to manifest in relationships _with others_ than because of self pleasuring. You are making masturbation out to be a deviant sexual behavior when it is nothing of the sort.

Do you remember the Mr. Yuck stickers parents would put on chemical bottles? Why did they do that? Because children don't know any better and would drink poison. They needed to be told not to drink that stuff. Based on your logic, it is natural to drink poison. The same thing applies here except the world is saying go go go do it even though there are far more negative effects than positive effects from it. Try going on semen retention for 3 months. The majority of people always say they feel way better abstaining.
I think it's healthy and keeps the libido alive.
