I have been doing this type of 'Rescue' for about 50 yrs. The job you did here looks good. You got lucky with the springs, screws, pins and hammers. But you already knew that. My goal is to bring all the guns back to shooting condition. When I get one with this much damage to the wood I epoxy it as you did. The only other step I take is under cutting the wood from the inside and epoxy 3/32" stainless steel stiffener rods to reinforce the 'break point'. That sort of pin is not visible from the outside. But ensures the stock will not break again during firing. I am currently doing an L.C. Smith 20ga. the stock came to me in a large zip lock bag.
Thank you for the post. Many people do not realize how much skill, and talent goes into this type of repair.

My friend bought a similar double barrel wall hanger that was only slightly cut down. It had one barrel that was also loaded. I usually check everything first thing. I have had ones with cleaning tips from cleaning rods stuck in them. Some that had just balls rammed down them. On cracked stocks I like to piece them back together by drilling holes and putting in metal pins. I usually use pieces of metal coat hangers. This is a type of repair that was used in the old days. Though most of what I work on are wall hangers that will never be shot or have no real value collector wise. A lot of times the stocks broke because someone shot both barrels at the same time. That is very common with double barrels. Love the videos!!!

Soaking the whole thing in a solution of approx 1to20 molasses to water for a couple of weeks will remove all rust and paint and will make screws and nuts easy to remove; it only affects rust and will not harm metal with the exception of aluminium alloys! ( My mate thought that he would clean up his wife's frying pan with this method; all he was left with was the handle ! ) It will leave lockwork, triggers and springs functioning. I was shown this method over half a century ago and have been successfully using it on many of my restorations.

Better to use sodium hydroxide (lye) as flux for electrolysis. Tablesalt (sodium chloride) also produces chlorine as it breaks down which corrodes the metal.
After electrolysis, neutralize lye by dipping parts in diluted vinegar, scrub clean with water.

    FYI:
FIRST Thing to do with any muzzleloader is check to see it it is loaded.
Use a dowel and see if it goes as deep as the nipples (or vent if a flintlock) if it don't it is loaded. Just because the load is 50 ~100 years old or more DON'T mean it won't fire.
If loaded soak the breach in hot water for a couple hours, then pull the load.
    Second:
You could have used a penetrating oil and a wrench to remove the two breach plugs. Would have made it a lot easier to clean and inspect the bores.
I couldn't watch you work on the locks. I'm gonna guess you lack the proper tools; A main spring vise, for example, sense you lacked even a wedge puller.
All in all, from what I did watch, I pray you use it only as a wall hanger. If you ever decide you want to use it, have a gunsmith who kniws what he or she is doing go through the locks, triggers, and barrels.
A new set of nipples (cheap) would be a good idea, as well. The original looked bad, as in clogged and possibly hammered down.
The threads are probably 1/4 by 20.
They do make musket nipples that will work, (uses "top hat" musket caps, for a hotter spark) or for standard number 11 caps.
Track of The Wolf has flash guards (choice of plain steel, brass, or German Silver) for both musket nipples and number 11 nipples, that help prevent powder residue (highly corrosive) from getting into the locks, and help prevent burning to the stock in the area of the nipples.

Or are you using a different type of Epoxy, Normally for Stock Repair you'd want to use Acraglas to repair chips, glass bed the gun, as well as fix splitting. Normally when you have a stock split like that you'd want to drill small holes into both broken halves and insert a dowel as well as Acraglas to keep it strong if the intention is continual use. There are so many Internet lawyers here who have no clue what they are talking about. in the us Black powder guns are not considered firearms under atf regulation therefore do not have to abide by any of the modern rulings and NFA black powder guns do not have to conform to any regulation like barrel length forward pistol grip stock ect This gun is perfectly legal in every state except for New Jersey where New Jersey only requires a background check by does not have the restrictions on the black powder gun barrel lengths itself these are basically viewed this same as a pocket knife or sword And can be shipped directly to your house if you go to cabelas you will even see silencer CO's maxim 50 with a Built-in suppressor which can ship directly to your house because again it's not a gun. This man also has a firearms Western nation license and must be cautious of the law to Keep his business afloat And remember sense of black powder guns are not considered firearms you can buy any caliber if you will look at my TH-cam channel and scroll down a few videos you will see me shooting a literal black powder grenade launcher That has a 7 or 8" barrel and a shoulder stock that shipped right to my house with ups ( 2.5 inch boar )

Wow that was SUPER rough condition. That wood was almost dust. I have seen worse, but not by much.

Black paint is (was?) put on sawed off shotguns of people living in western Brazil & eastern Bolivia to protect them from rust. Sawed off shot guns are for Jaguars and ant bears in close quarters and thick vegetation when there's no time to aim.

Soaking the obviously rotten parts that might be used as a template or restored in a penetrating epoxy, just so they don’t fallen into little pieces upon disassembly, then maybe make a mold out of plaster of Paris to make replicated units and take those metal parts to the guy with the Cnc milling machine and have several made in stainless steel and stocks in composite or laminated colored wooden pieces, you could create a new form of sexy.

Hey, I am doing a similar restoration right now, though luckily my stock is only on 3 pieces. I wanted to ask what you used to clean the wood before epoxying it. I tried to just do it as is, but the clear epoxy turned grey and pealed right off. I think it was too much oil and dirt in the old stock.
