I went to Helsinki in the summer for a week with my spouse and would def visit again, I didn't see half the things I wanted. Suomenlinna is definitely a must see, only don't plan anything else for that day. I really enjoyed the city, I'm from South East Europe and do not fit that stereotype at all, so I appreciated the lack of small talk, the importance of personal space and the lack of people aggressively trying to sell me things or get me into their bar every five meters. Great beer at The Riff, too.

Surpirised there was no Oodi, the Helsinki central library on the video, which is considered the newest architectural attractions of Helsinki (opened in 2018).

Finland is known for architecture and design, and Finland takes bride in it. Different parts of Helsinki have been built in different eras, so there's various styles present in the city view. Finnish architects have done well in the competitions, so quite a few of buildings are designed by Finnish architects. Here's one of the latest projects: "Helsinki - City of Future? | Amos Rex Museum, Oodi Central Library and Kamppi Chapel | Euromaxx".

Finland was under Russian control between 1809-1917 and central Helsinki was very much formed and built in that period. Helsinki was a very small town before that and almost totally ruined in the 1808-1809 war (in the Senate Square clips you can see the blue stone house in one corner, that's the oldest surviving building in the city predating Russian rule, and it's currently the Helsinki City Museum). Helsinki even has had the nickname "Little Petersburg" because the imperial centre has so many similarities in architecture. During the Cold War Helsinki was several times used as a stand in for both St Petersburg and Moscow for movies (the most famous ones are I think Gorky Park (1983) and the Reds (1981)).

Yes, the Senate Square area is indeed like a little piece of St. Petersburg being transferred to Helsinki, but most of the other old Helsinki is more like Art Nouveau (Jugend) style. Huvilakatu is a good example.

Yes, both cities were designed by German architects in jugendstil...

Well to be fair, Finland was an autonomous part of the Russian Empire. Finland was definitely part of it and had to defer to Russia, but had more say in their own affairs. And since Russia was fighting on other fronts, they tried their best to play nice with Finland to avoid confrontation on all fronts. Hence the nice city center and other such attempts to show goodwill, as well as subtly convincing that being part of Russia is actually quite ok.

      @butterflies655 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Let's be fair. Finland was directly a part of Sweden over 600 years and after an autonomous grand duchy of Russia's Empire of tsar 108 years. A German architect Carl Ludvig Engel designed a lot of buildings for Helsinki and St Petersburg during that era. St Petersburg has been said to be the most western style city in Russia. Also a lot of finnish architects designed buildings for Helsinki like Aalto and Saarinen.

Helsinki coastline parks and cycling routes should be mentioned. You can also visit other islands by ferry or there are sightseeing cruises.
With some flaws this is still a better video than the endless travel vlogger videos. They tend to spend a day or two in Helsinki and visit the exact same places, some of them shown here, too.

You asked for some tips. I think that video showed quite many tourist attractions to visit, but my tip is that if you plan to visit Helsinki, do it in summer. If you visit Finland in winter, then you should go to Lapland. Another tip is that it's a good idea to have a "base camp" in Helsinki and take daytrips eg. to Turku, Tampere and Porvoo. The first two are easily reachable by train an the third one by bus.

At the end of May I and a couple friends went to see Rammstein in Helsinki and we were a bit late on for booking accommodation - so there were no reasonably priced hotel rooms available north from Suomenlinna, or they were way too far up north. So we got a three tenant room for one night in Hostel Suomenlinna, a small hostel kept by the school camp association of Finland. It was an experience, riding the ferry back and forth a couple times, etc. The idyll was like out of a Lucas Arts game from the late 80's/early 90's, LOL! We didn't have much time to explore the island, though, which is a bit of a pity. Maybe we should take a daytime trip there closer to the midsummer some year.

Maybe you could react to Oodi library. There is rooms that you can use free. Like studios where you can make music, films,
big printers, 3D scanners, editing studio, kitchen etc.

The ”Swedish-Russian war” aka: the Finnish War was part of the Anglo-Russian war of the Napoleonic wars and british forces in small amounts actually took part in that war. Also the legendary british war ship of the line the HMS Implacable (originally a french ship which survived the Battle of Trafalgar) and HMS Centaur destroyed a Russian war ship ”Vsevolod” on the finnish coast somewhere between Hanko and Helsinki of which the HSM Implacable even received honors and there is even a painting made from that event.
The HMS Implacable would go on to be the second oldest ship in the Royal Navy until 1949 when they decided to sunk it for god knows why…

The part of Helsinki with most tourist attractions is pocket-sized, I've advised tourists who have badly overshot their intended target just by walking. Of course there are interesting places further out, but short term visitors rarely venture to those.

I think this was old introduction of Helsinki? I would go to Oodi library. You can even print big posters there for free. Then i would go to cafe Regatta for hot cocoa. Maybe to Löyly for Sauna and salmon soup.
For views and drink Hotel Clarion Sky room. And if it was thursday and wanted to party I would go to nightclub Kaarle XII
Suomenlinna and Vallisaari are both nice places to visit.

I think it left out Eduskuntatalo (the house of the parlament). It is not a tourist attraction per se since you normally can't get a guided tour in there, but it definately is a noteworthy landmark with unique architecture in Helsinki.

They left out the Ateneum, our national art gallery and also I recommend the Helsinki opera house. Not for it's grand looks but for a great experience. A lot of places were missing from that video. Best place for scenery and all around fun city break is Turku. Turku was Finland's first capital.

Who the heck filmed the original video and when. You can't get a good picture of the whole, and what the narrator says isn't timed with what is shown half the the time. Aside from having being filmed poorly, that Finlandia Hall bit that showed the sign for Concert Hal was embarrassingly hilarious, the letters were not aligned in Finnish and Swedish and the Hall part was missing and L, were they renovating or what.

Yep. (sarcasm) Got to love Tampere and the idea to close a very arterial street from private vehicles. (/sarcasm)
Not to say that I enjoy driving in Helsinki either, because always, ALWAYS some crossing that your satnav takes you to, has been converted to a road job site and it takes multiple turns to circumnavigate... especially in he night and when it rains it is a nightmare for a non-local, IMHO.

I'm only speaking for myself here.
Through my job I have to travel to Helsinki regularly. I would never ever go there voluntarily. I find it, and the greater capital region, to be the most drab, ugly and depressing part of the country. I despise it on a visceral level. I've been to Birmingham, voluntarily, 3 times so far, and it's downright idyllic by comparison. The fact that many of Southern Finland's essential services have been concentrated to that city, specifically the parts of the city most hostile to cars or pressed up against the sea away from the highways, at the expense of the surrounding regions, just makes me resent it on a philosophical level as well. The architecture is an unholy mix of jugend style (which isn't terrible, but not great, just meh), Soviet urban dystopia, and soulless capitalist BS. As expected, the video picks the cherries out of the dung when it shows the scenery. Google street view shows the whole grey, dusty, angsty, concrete mess.
It's obvious that other people like the place. It's not my place to judge them or their taste in cities.

  • @MarianneKokki
