I owned a 50’s Mark 30 and it was a screamer. Had it on a 13ft. wooden speed hull very similar to the one in this video…name the “Cha-Cha”. Top speed around 33mph and capable of pulling slalom skiers out of deep water with very little sweat. Easily topped out around 7000 RPM but I rarely ran it full out. I had an uncle who liked to push it into its limit on calm rivers and he blew a crankshaft at full speed, breaking off the flywheel at max RPM’s. Surprisingly little damage to the inside of the cowling, so we tore the engine completely down, installed a new crank and completely rebuilt the engine. Afterwards it still ran like new for years. I grew up loving that boat and motor from age 14, and finally sold it to a friend when I hit 21. The motor was mounted quite high and the boat would skid badly at top speed in tight turns. The new owner slid into a huge boat dock at full throttle, destroying both the boat and the motor…..sad ending to very reliable motor that had thrilled me all through my youth. My family later also owned a Mercury Mark 58 and a Mark 100…..all fantastic motors that never let us down. I’ve always loved Mercury two strokes…..still do.
Just had a look again. Amazing job you've done. Specially w the motor, but the boat look just right for it to. The sound bring back all kinds of good memories from my teens in the 70s. /Henrik
THANKS FOR POSTING THIS AS BACK IN THE 70'S WE HAD A BUNCH OF THESE 29.9 CU INCH MERC'S THAT WE RACED C STOCK HYDRO ....NEVER HAD ONE THAT NICE THOUGH!! THANKS FOR SHOWING HISTORY FOR SO MANY PEOPLE!!
The lake in front of my house dried up once a few years ago and I found something like this motor encrusted in the mud. I pulled it out, hung it from a tree pressure washed it and it was in really bad shape but it must have fallen off of somebody's boat a billion years ago....
God- we had almost the identical boat back in the day! Just breath taking!!! Well done!!
