What a beautiful sound!!! That gearbox whine is music to the ears and driven by a man that could drive anything (and more than likely has!) Fantastic!!
Fantastic to see this great video of a Scammell Highwayman! I was always impressed by them as a lad. This one sounds great and the driver makes those gear changes look easy - which I can well imagine they are not!
Interesting Gate for the Gears . And Armstrong Patent steering of course . Beautiful Old Truck . People did Millions of Miles in things like this Old Girl .
my old boss when I joined the circus had one of these he loved it... was a work horse but every time we would hit a hill me and ratty would have to be ready to jump out with chocks in case he lost revs... love it!! good memories!!
@@mctwista3179 Our tankers firm - Gilbraith Tankers, Accrington - had radial compressors fiitted for discharging tanker loads. You knew what was happening when the pto was engaged! Highwaymen, driven properly and professionally would last forever. Noisy, smelly, rattly, uninsulated and requiring double-declutching but one of Scammell's best.
Think that 660 VMA is ex-Chettles. They put a 600 (might have been a 680...) Leyland in this in the late '60's. Think they upgraded the front axle at the same time and also had the dual headlamp front wings made. Also think that this may have been originally from Shell-Mex. Am I right in all this?.
imagine pullin trailers with them and no power steering got an old brochure from the 7Ts i have yarp .sent off for different ones out of observers book of commercial vehicles when i was a kid .

This is my grandads lorry very loved and still toes with it. He pulls a 34ft showman living wagon. He turns 80 this year and it’s his pride and joy.
Lovely to hear from you Abbie.
Love the big Scammells . Really enjoyed those few precious minutes in the cab driving along. Thanks for the video.👍
0:40 hear that indeed! Absolutely fantastic, nowt like a gearbox whine. Scammell and AEC were famous for their wonderful acoustics 😁
Ahh, the required double declutching, something I learned on a Cummins engined ERF back in '73 - ! 😁
That brings back memories traveled with a fair years ago done some miles in one of those wonderful tractors
Awesome good to see that old Gate change gear box that those old Scammells had lovely old wagon
Yup, even the early '70s Scammel Roadtrain 3 had a gate the size of a dinner plate - !
Now that's what I call a manual gearbox 👍

flippin brilliant old scammells they look aggressive .
Boss ass truck. I would look great behind the wheel. Love the shift gate.
Proper old school love it 👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧
FAB VIDEO, LOVE WATCHING THIS.
I remember ShellMex’s fleet returning to their Ardrossan refinery base around tea time every night.
Absolutely awesome lorries , could you imagine today’s steering wheel attendants driving that ? 🤔 no nor could I lol 😂
"Steering wheel attendants"...nice....our drivers disparagingly called them 'truck aimers!" :)
Them drivers worked no mistakes 💪💪
on the cover was a crusader six wheeler painted with a union jack all over .i wonder if that got saved?.
They had an early version of assisted steering called Armstrong power steering.

Distinctive truck and expert driving. Seemed to be flying along. Gardner 150 badge on the front but it sounds like a Leyland?
A look at the speedometer and time to read it would have been interesting.
Sounds the business!
Great truck, & a Gardner.
Sounds gorgeous that Gardner and the whine of the gears too. What is the stalk that comes up off the steering column? Is it wipers or lights or both?
Hand throttle. Old school cruise control.
Sounds a bit like a Detroit what engine is in that?
That's not a 2 stroke, could be a Leyland 680.
It's got a Gardner 150 badge on front of wagon, if that's right, it's the Gardner 6lx.
@@carllockpick6179 never noticed Gardner badge on this wee screen. Thanks.

Some people can drive properly some can t and some just get by like me
👍👌👏
Why does the speedometer say MPH instead of KPH. I’ve never heard of them not using the metric system.
This is a UK lorry, being driven in the UK and we have always used MPH (we still do), despite being metric in other measurements
Beautiful old lorry but not sure I’d want to spend 8-10 hours a day driving it, it wouldn’t do your hearing much good.
Classic not plastic.
You have to actually drive one of these. Not sure you'd want to as a job.
Fit inducing editing skills . Couldn’t watch with the horrible cuts .
Scammell beanies available from our shop www.etsy.co.uk/shop/vintagelorryshop
Just got mine yesterday! Already love it and thanks for the tea! Proper job! 👍🇬🇧
