  • In this video we finally install the timing belt in our Toyota MR2, and only 8 months after we started.

Hate to point it out but you made that way more difficult than it needed to be. dont install the lower cover or ancillary pulley you can see a small dot on the oil pump and you line that up with the crank timing pulley. also tensioner goes on before you put the belt on so you dont risk cross threading the bolt holes. all in all nice to see some progress though.

Interesting, didn’t notice the dot on the oil pump 😖 although having the pulley on definitely made it easier to turn the crank by hand. Although it’s not in the video I did try to put the tensioner on first, but I wasn’t able to get the belt over both cam pulleys. Ended up just sticking to the service manual method which said to put the tensioner on after the belt

Nice one Mrs & Mr... I'm working on an MR2 Turbo Rev2 - We'll see who get on the road first!

How dare you make my wife come in front of me!
I suspect you’ll be on the road first, everything seems to take 10x longer than it should with us, the 8 month timing belt job being a perfect example 😂 what have you got left to do on yours?

Front Brake caliper is binding, slider pin is completely stuck and will NOT come out. Rebuilt the engine, and like you I messed up the timing belt, but didn't notice until the engine was back in and the timing is all over the place (i.e. no power). And lastly, clutch pedal needs adjusting with a full flush and bleed of the ancient hydraulic fluid, so I can change gear without pushing my foot through the floor ;-) Good luck!

This video proved invaluable to me today. No idea what the bgb was going on about, I think they want you to compress that tensioner by tightening the pulley bolt?? I just took it out and did it on a bench, never would've got the allen key in place & belt on otherwise. Thank you, love your videos 👍

I prefer watching you guys to The Skid Factory.
Timing belts/chains are tedious as hell. ...Better than gasket scraping though.

High praise indeed, although personally I prefer Skid Factory 😂 having said that, they’d definitely be better with less lemon squash and more tea

Correct me if Im wrong, but why did you put apply any tension on the idler pulley while adjusting the 1.9mm of tensiorer?
How much free play does your timing belt have?

Great video!! Im about to do mine i just have one question, does the timing belt have any marks on it to match all pulleys? I just did my 1990 nissan 300zx (I know its a total different animal) but I thought the process was similar, it was really a pain in the ass to make it all match, if you just have to align all the points to the pulleys it looks a whole lot easier!

Thanks! Sadly it didn’t, although we didn’t use a genuine Toyota belt, just a third party one, so the Toyota belts might have marks on

How did you line up the timing marks?
