Fun fact: IRL China Lake's cycle was so fast you could accurately fire all 4 rounds, even before the first one reached the target
Probably because the typical 40x46mm round was low pressure enough to where cycling it would be as easy as cycling it while empty.

@@thezig2078 In all fairness, Treyarch probably did it for balancing purposes, hence why it also only holds 2 rounds and not the full 3+1. Though to be honest, if the China Lake were to ever come back to a mainline CoD game, it should definitely have those hornets nest shells that effectively turn it into a shotgun with a 1-hit range rivaling MWII’s double barrel, at the cost of still having a fire rate slower than the typical pump action, and have the grenades as an attachment that halves/eliminates reserve ammo with similar lethality to a UBGL.
@@thezig2078 the game would be an unplayable unbalanced mess. everyone would just spam the China Lake.
If it's for balancing, imagine game mode where exclusively, we only use realistic china lakes lol, total madness
Fun fact: a museum in HCMC (Vietnam) has this gun on display, and they called it the "Upgraded M79 grenade launcher"

@@toughspitfire Well, i don't really know. Haven't revisited the place since 2019.
But that one time when i visited, most of American made grenade launchers, including the aforementioned China Lake, were labeled as M79 (i.e M203, XM148 = Underbarrel M79 Grenade Launcher,...)

Makes sense, too. Maintains a high capacity and an easy way to shoot fast while still remaining relatively compact.
If only it lived long enough to get a bullpup variant for similar compactness and a larger capacity…

The pump-action grenade launcher used in the Vietnam War from the late 60’s to the early 70’s, that never really saw that much action, unlike the M202 Flash.
It was also manufactured in very low numbers, i think less than 100 were made

@@aazelion5189 There's 4 remaining from the original 1968 batch of 50 receivers that were made, in the mid 2000s the US looked at them again to see about using them and had around 300 receivers made to see if they could be mounted under a rifle like the M203
M202 flash isn't in the same category as the China Lake so I don't get the comparison. The China Lake was meant to be replace the M79 Grenade launcher while the M202 replaced the M2 flamethrower

That reload is surprisingly satisfying ngl.
To be fair, Payday 2 did underload the thing. 3 with 3 in reserve is practically accurate to real life. None in the chamber, but eh, underloading guns is more forgivable than 8 shots in a tiny tube magazine.

I don’t understand why this is such an underrated and obscure weapon? I mean, a pump action grenade launcher has to be the coolest idea for a gun ever! Why isn’t there more like these?!

@@undeadprinceofchaos3731 dunno, I reckon it is. A lot of experimental weapons where phased out for being unsophisticated.
Ian McCollum did a video of live fire with some practice rounds, loading and cycling were very touchy. In general, it's probably heavier, and harder to use than a standard M79 of the time. There are probably also fewer cases where one 40mm doesn't cut it.
@@aw55550 doubt that, it was probably just too heavy and bulky, also possibly expensive. if it weren't for those 3 things i bet it'd have seen a lot more use

1:17 - same reload sound effects and animations as the hunting shotgun, and the empty shells also sound like empty shotgun shells, lol.
Black Ops 1 has a reload animation for the China Lake.
The pump-action animations on from Black Ops and Celtic were both awesome.

I know it was a closed beta and so you probably couldn't get footage, but the china lake in The Finals was absolutely stunning in both it's audio and visual style. Just like cultic, you also reload it properly by loading the first round into the chamber directly

Something I noticed, in Mafia 3 the bolt doesn't cycle all the way back and definitely not enough to eject the 40mm casing

Taken literally with M576 MPAPERS shells, though those reportedly didn’t feed well.
Alternatively there’s 18-shot .22 lr adapters for 40x46mm that features a more similar profile to the shells it DOES feed well, so there’s that too. Couple that with a high velocity hollow point load for the .22’s (or .22lr rat shot), and it’ll make the KS-23M look wimpy in comparison.
There is a reload animation for China Lake in BO1 but in zombies.
